I thought the movie was very entertaining, like a solid 6 or 7/10. Characters are a bit underdeveloped but, shit, it's a giant cast and MK-11 kinda just throws you into the thick of it, so why not right? The idea of setting up the tournament... I'm sure some people won't like it but I like it a lot. If the tournament happens in the sequel it'll feel earned, and hopefully even more epic. And after playing MK-11 which featured no tournament, I just find the story fun to follow as well. I also really dig the casting all around... Kabal was great, Kano was unexpectedly the best part of the film for me in terms of entertainment, and Joe Taslim's eyebrow acting put in some leg work here. A few things that didn't work for me... the guy who plays Shang Tsung. This actor is great but all sense of gravitas is thrown out the window because he looks... well he looks ridiculous. The wig looks bad and Cary Tagawa's shoes are pretty hard to fill. I mean there's a reason the man has played Shang Tsung so many times. tbh I feel like if they had kind of taken liberties with Shang Tsung I wouldn't have been mad at that. And there's a lot of hate for Cole Young, which was unwarranted, just because he's a new character? Like, Mortal Kombat adds new characters every game wtf is the big deal lmao. But his character does have problems for sure! As the character that is the "most developed" he's the most boring. He's supposed to represent us, the average viewer entering this world for the first time, and I think Cole doesn't captivate us when there is already someone else the audience relates to more: Kano. Kano's reactions were a fun balance between being a caricature and having nuance. Kano is making fun of everything because, well, the world is kinda over the top and ridiculous. He's not taking it too seriously, neither are we, so he's just more interesting than Cole. Beyond that? I dig Cole I just think he needs more of a personality beyond "I care about my family".

In the games Sonya gets her rings from her high tech gauntlets, Kano has his laser from his metal eye, jax gets the metal arms either just to be stronger (the original games) or because he lost his arms. The whole arcana thing is completely new and honestly I thought I’d hate it but they did it well enough it doesn’t bother me as much as I thought it would.

I Loved Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. He was such a badass.

Sonya telling Jax to lay down when he was already laying down had me dying

The MK games have two timelines, in the first one who pulls Jax's arms off is Goro, in the second time line who does this is another character, Ermac

I feel like the pacing was so good it felt short and I’m kinda glad there saving the tournament for the next movie

Subzero comes back as noob saibot, when he took off his armor in the last fight kind of looked like an easter egg

Coles power is exactly what he was good at as a regular human fighter in the opening cage fight: get the shit beat out of him by taking tons of hits. Only now he can turn the ass beating into a net positive.

Imma say it, Mileena had some serious legs in this movie. Really hoping I'll see her in the sequel because that actress had the look down. Side note, Sub Zero has that Jason Voorhees vibe, any characters that faced him and survived before the end did so by luck.

Y'all need to react to Cinemax's/HBO Max's Warrior! It's based on Bruce Lee's writings, and it has the best choreography ever put on TV, while the acting, writing and score is all impeccable too! You'll love it, and Joe Taslim/Sub-Zero is in it.

Imagine if only Gareth Evans (The Raid 1&2) directed the action in the Mortal Kombat sequel. You guys must watch The Raid movie.

Not a martial arts movie suggestion, but rather a television series; "Warrior" (Joe Taslim co-stars and the fight scenes are some of the best for a TV series I have ever seen).

Honestly I thought this was pretty good, I'd even say amazing in comparison to what I expected, but I definitely hope the potential sequel gets a better budget. Literally every "bad thing" about this movie can be solved by increasing the budget and using that to get some more solid martial arts actors and better dialogue writers.

This is a definite purchase when it's release on DVD & Bluray for me. I've never been a fan of wirework battles as they always look too floaty and superfluous and I'd rather see full screen battle choreography instead of severely edited fight scenes but when someone makes a movie basted on a well-loved and popular subject, getting everything correct about that subject and delivering to its audience is number one and this movie seems to have that in spades (no pun intended given the opening scene). I'll have to watch the original Mortal Kombat movie again see how the two stack up but going from memory, I much prefer what this current movie is doing.

This movie hits me close to home because it was filmed in my old hometown in the sticks as well as some other places around the city/in the bush in my state in Australia. It's crazy how many films have/are being filmed in South Australia because we feel so disconnected from the rest of the world. The new Thor movie is also being filmed in Australia and we've got some big actors like Idris Elba, Zac Efron etc living here as well. Partly due to the pandemic these films have had to be filmed in Australia because we've handled it pretty well but I hope in the future more films are shot in my country.

Disappointed tbh...had high expectations. Maybe that's my fault... As a standalone film it fell flat..if its made into a trilogy then I could see it being better. It's just disappointing cause it wasn't promoted or said in any way(through trailers or anything) that this was essentially gonna be a prequel, so it's just a bit of a bummer to find that out during... Kano stole any scene he was in and carried the movie(but we know what happens with him). Sub Zeros scenes were cool and his effects were insanely well done for CGI. Everything else kind of sucked tho tbh, felt rushed and was incredibly short. Gorro was absolutely wasted, Reptile was meh, Scorpion was in it for a total of TWO scenes, ok 3 cause he had a .5 sec flash back scene and was hyped as a central character, Cole was bland as fuck(tho I really like the premise of a new character like him having a blood line related to scorpion) and had the lamest weapon reveal, Raiden could have intervened WAY more than hes ever been allowed and they barely used him, them roaming the desert and randomly running into Liu Kang like "oh hey woops there ya are!" was just lazy, Hammer Bro aka General Raikor(?) was one of the worst characters Ive ever seen, Jax's "Arcana" with growing more arms on top of his metal arms made my brain go "wut", the fatalities were lame as shit(minus Kung Lao's, Sonya doing a barrel roll to catch a knife thrown by Cole was laughable. Sub Zeros scenes were cool and his effects were insanely well done for CGI(his vanishing move into the ice cloud down the alley luring Jax was insanely badass). "Scorpion's Revenge" shits on this movie tho and it's an animated movie. It's what I thought this movie would be more similar towards in terms of story/arcs(since the trailers made it seem like Scorpion would have much more of a presence/role)... HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend checkin that movie out if anyone hasn't seen it, or watch it prior to watching MK 2021. MK 2021 was better than MK Annihilation tho i'll give it that, but that aint sayin much.

If you want a really entertaining movie with Hiroyuki Sanada to react to, watch "Legend of the Eight Samurai". He's really young in it, it's back from when he was legit a Japanese heartthrob star in a ton of ninja movies. It's on Amazon Prime in, I think, reasonable DVD quality. (there's a Japanese Bluray too, but that's obviously hard to get just for a reaction)

won't lie, I honestly found this movie to be great,up to one specific moment,and then afterwards It kinda killed the movie for me. I actually found the character relationships between Kano,Sonya,Jax,Liu Kang and Kung Lao,Scorpion and Sub Zero to be nailed perfectly. Kano being the definitive Stand out character. Even the villians were straight out of the game,with characters i didn't expect to see (Nitara) The explanation of the mark leading into how The heroes can do SUPERNATURAL moves while silly,I actually bought into due to how badass the characters were. It took me like 10 minutes to really break down what my main issues were and it boiled down to these main things. 1. The moment the main character achieved his "Arcana" and his power was legit "PLOT ARMOR" and he beats Prince Goro,I hated his character. Really,the Human punching bag kills THE PRINCE OF THE SHOKANS in his first fight ? 2. The inclusion of Cole affects the character relationships of the characters we came to see. We came to see a full on fight between Scorpion and Sub Zero,and having cole in the middle makes it lame. 3. They teased this like it was gonna be the first Tournament,only for it be a Prequel where Shang Tsung tries to kill the heroes BEFORE the tournament even begins,and we NEVER SEE THE TOURNAMENT at all. 4. Mileena is one the greatest Mortal Kombat characters ever created and they kinda wasted her.

I personally enjoyed it. Kane pretty much stole every scene that he was in and I'm kind of sad he's dead now. The fighting worked for me and although it may have gone on like 15 or 20 minutes too long, I liked the overall story. The teases for stuff also worked for me. A good thing about MK being around for so damn long is that they will never run out of fighters to include; Johnny Cage for sure is up next and I'm curious who will play him.

The Mortal Kombat soundtrack was by a group called The Immortals, who later changed their names to Lords of Acid, who are still going strong!

I really enjoyed this, had a great time. But I can understand why people won't like it. I don't mind the liberties they took with the story. That's why it's called an adaptation. If you want the note for note of the game, play the game. I hope we get a sequel to see the tournament.
