We Dyno Tested a Vinfast VF8 and This Happened...

We got our hands on a Vinfast VF8… Unfortunately, we only had our hands on it for a couple of hours. With such limited time, we did what any reasonable person with a couple of hours would do. We took it directly to the dyno!
While the result wasn’t the nice dyno pull we had hoped for, it was certainly educational and interesting. We explore everything from the unique suspension setup to some interesting vehicle behaviours.

I drove one, the car is very heavy and when we nailed it, it took off. My guess is based on its weight it is running at least 400 if not a bit more. It is not as fast as my 392 Scatpack at full WOT but way smoother and less drama for everything in between.

You may have to connect the car to the dynos without removing the wheels out because they having sensor inside each tire and linked with OS.

Reading over the comments, I see many newbies who think they knew it all and try to point out the wrong thing Dyno tested. It is very funny! All I can say, "Thank you Dyno" for very professional response to those newbies. For those newbies, I think you will be better if you just watch and learn!

Dyno only applies to internal combustion engines (I think) with smart electric vehicles, the transmission mechanism is smarter. The processor implicitly guesses that the vehicle is in danger. So Dyno completely failed

We dyno tune all of our EV builds and we specifically use a hub dyno to build motor torque maps since "tuning" is largely around getting the right torque requests at the right time. But you are likely correct that the ADAS systems are interfering in this situation.

Too many sensors and fail safe programs on EVs in general to do traditional gears to axles dyno testing. Cool idea!

I'm not a fan of Dynapack hub dynos, among other things I've heard they can damage differentials on some cars since the loads aren't linked. If the only problem is the car's traction or stability control, you might have luck with a mechanically linked roller dyno where the rear tires could spin the front rollers (on a rear-drive car) to keep some OEM traction control systems happy. I think Mustang and Dynojet each have some models with that feature.

We use hub dyno's almost exclusively for EV performance tuning with our performance and motorsport EV builds. In this case, we're going to need to put more effort into making the ADAS think life's ok. Your idea to use a roller dyno to do that might work, we're going to have to get another VF8 and try!

How does regenation work? Revert magetics field is on with revert current, so the car will roll back a few centimetres if you don't break. Because car is not move, so motivation of car equal 0. So, when regen is on, car roll back a little. If the car move, you cannot see the roll back.

Regen works when the VCU makes a negative torque request while the vehicle is moving forward. Think of it as increasing the load on your generator. It's likely the wheels rotating in opposite directions is some combination of the VCU trying to preload the driveline to remove driveline lash combined with some fault in error handling. Perhaps not looking for motor resolver position or similar.

I'm really interested what you are doing there, technically (as a auto engineer myself). I couldn't see, but I assume you have those hub dynos on all 4 corners ..... do they have a mechanism to sync speeds? With effectively an open differential, how if something gets out of sync, how does the car know if it going in a straight line, vs around a corner? Interesting that you said you had experience with that same Bosch VDU. I used to work in Vinfast, Supplier Quality, and Bosch also supplied that the VCU on VFe34. The Vinfast program timing was so short, there was no proper time to do calibration work, Bosch threatened not to ship parts for SOP - they didn't want their name associated with that! I left before VF8 SOP, but maybe the same thing happened.

The Dynapak (and hub dyno's in general) synchronize the wheels by dynamically adjusting the resistance and yes we were using a Dynapak 4000 so a hub dyno on each corner. In the case of an open differential, this load adjustment keeps it from just spinning one wheel.

The car comes with warranty. If you purchased the car just take a good care of it and be happy. If there’s problems with the car you can always take it back to the dealer to have them diagnose and fix it. I don’t know why you have to worry about it that much. There’s no perfect cars out there. I drove Japanese, American, and Kia cars and there’s problems here and there that cost me money to fix them.

Guys if you don’t know what to do just say so. You are trying to make the car seems inadequate when these are safety features in most modern cars. Electric cars are single gears, I believe only Porsche has multiple gear electric car. Do some research first

We build EV race cars for a living. This gives us a pretty good idea how they work. Worth noting is a Tesla will run on the dyno. Our race car uses a VCU from the same Bosche product family as the VF8 so we also know exactly what the VCU and VCU calibration is capable of. I don't understand your point about single gear. Porsche's Taycan has 2 speeds (gear ratios) but all EV's have gears. Electric motors spin to very high RPM and they use a gear reduction to drive the wheels (I promise, your wheels don't turn at 10,000rpm). Typical production EV's are usually in the 8:1 to 10:1 gear reduction range. Our race car is a 6.2:1 - but gearing choice has everything to do with motor torque curves and available RPM.

@@nguyenlong5989 Vinfast has a gearbox. It is just that it is a single direct drive gear reduction. Reverse is accomplished by spinning the motor in reverse, not by changing a gear. Translation: Vinfast có hộp số. Chỉ là nó là hộp số truyền động trực tiếp duy nhất thôi. A four-wheel roller dyno would tie the wheels together so that wheel speeds would match. Blocking the cameras so ADAS is "blind" is probably the first thing we'd try next though. Typically when snow or leaves or road grime block a camera, you lose ADAS functionality but not performance. @@SonNguyen-fc2xg
