This guy reminds me of John Burns, who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg as a 69-year-old civilian. He was a veteran of the War of 1812 and volunteered to defend his hometown from the Confederate assault. He borrowed a modern rifle from a wounded Union soldier and joined the Iron Brigade in the fighting at McPherson's Ridge, where he was wounded multiple times. He survived his injuries and met President Lincoln when he came to deliver the Gettysburg Address. There is an amazing statue of him near the spot where he fought.

Dragoons were mounted infantry. Basically combination of sturdiness and firepower of the infantry combined with speed of cavalry. It was used at least until WW2 (polish uhlans were mounted infantry)

Dragoons are the first mobile Infantry so to speak.... often falsely show in movies charging the enemy on horse. they would do that of course if the situation requiered it. But the normal way for them to fight was: ride to their position planned before battle , dismount and fight as line or mostly light infantry.
