I was trying to do the same, but i did it with the sponge type material you use to make pillows, and i tried on tournament size pieces. The material was a bit too thick and wasnt wide enough (it was a test though). Dont try that at home, stick with regular foam. But damm shame too see a handsome looking chess set underwater.

You can also do this with regular foam.... I was hoping that this was special foam that you can just literally press the chess pieces into... Sorry about the mishap btw... I'm a klutz too lol

There is foam out there like that, however it doesn't hold items in as well as this does. It's definitely worth the effort in the end!
