I just want to add that when I was at her show in Houston April 23rd, she said something that a lot of people did not really pay attention to. But now. And with rumors about how her and Joe had multiple breakups, I’m rethinking many songs, all the way back to Lover. She’s prepping us for the mess in her announcement about Speak Now. She’s saying she’s going to be messy by detailing the bluntness and “flailing” lyrics of the album. She references Dear Reader which is a song about “I shouldn’t be your idol, I’m not going to be a reliable narrator.” I think it’s going to show in what she does and the media perception of her this summer.

Oh and to be fair we can’t say “Taylor can’t be responsible for the words and actions of some man.” Then blame joe for Taylor making the decision to self isolate with him. It was her choice. She’s a grown woman and she chose to make a sacrifice for someone she loved. Let’s hold her accountable and stop blaming Joe. He may have asked for privacy but ultimately it was her choice to agree. I’m so sick of this narrative that joe is at fault for her choosing to go private..

I always thought that super private Taylor wouldn't last. She didn't disappear at first because she truly wanted to and was tired of the spotlight, she went away because she got cancelled and felt that everyone hated her. After she survived the cancellation I think she only kept a low profile because that's what Joe wanted and because of the pandemic; even in interviews she was always a lot more willing to talk about him than he was about her. Her personality was always bubbly and extroverted so it was a matter of time before blondie went off the rails and had another chaotic relationship in front of all of us 😭😂

So the whole “this song is about you” thing: it does seem to me that Taylor sometimes takes one song she previously wrote inspired by one man or relationship, and almost VISIBLY applies the song and the feeling it captured to her present situation. The thing that made me think this was the times she pointed to Joe in the audience while singing Love Story or whatever. And people seem to be retconning Midnights songs that very easily apply to past relationships/breakups to apply to Joe, and while I don’t think any do apply to Joe, I think she may now be applying ANY of her breakup songs to her present breakup. So basically, a song becomes about someone for her even though it wasn’t written for them. In the future it may feel like it’s about both of them, or a new person. So Cardigan doesn’t have to have been written for Matty Healy for her to decide it’s about him now.

As a huge fan of The 1975, Matty Healy and Taylor Swift, just the idea of this relationship happening is so wild to me 😭😭

Honestly, aside from drumming up publicity I wonder if this was actually her being kind to Joe in away. Rumors swirling about him cheating, his costar getting attacked, and that photo of him? He was not doing well. He's also as we know notoriously private. So maybe this was her attempt to give him some peace and redirect the attention to her and see Joe in a better light (because Joe or Matty? Who looks better? )

As a long-term Swiftie, Taylor's relationship with Matty was definitely a turning point for me. Even though I'm fine with her being happy and doing her own thing, it was also a moment of really questioning a lot of other things, which you have talked about in the "ethical billionaire" video. It was listening to people who talk about the fact that there aren't many Swifties of Color, and there's a reason for that. It was looking at some of her political actions and questioning her political performativity. 2023 was the first year Taylor Swift wasn't my #1 Artist of the Year in my Apple Replay.

Do you think it’s relevant that her aesthetic for releasing midnights (midnights mayhem) was very 1975? Wood panel walls, velour curtains, crochet top, corduroy pants… Also, it’s one thing to keep the relationship itself private, it’s another to literally never in 6 years walk a carpet together, even when you both attend the same event. That can’t be sustainable. I could see how at first it was nice to have some privacy surrounding the relationship, but eventually the lack of doing anything at all together that is pretty much normal in their professions started to seem just weird. when Midnights was released, at first listen the sound effects and voice alterations (such as in Midnight rain) reminded me SO much of the 1975. I remember thinking "what is this 2014-sound?". Sonically and aesthetically, a relationship overlap makes sense, both professionally and romantically.

Hi there, 1975 fan here and was at the last show Matty was before flying to Nashville. I think what I am only concerned by is how this is going to affect him personally. Is he suddenly going to be swarmed by the media? Is he going to be more guarded? Are fans gonna see less of him let alone get close to him? Are tickets gonna get more expensive now?? I understand that by potentially dating her his profile is going to increase even more. Been a fan since 2014, so to see him get more famous astronomically is insane to me.

As someone who became a swiftie some time between reputation and lover seeing this is kidna wild to me because ive never seen all these speculations live lmao I'm generally very put of the loop when it comes to celebrity dating and mostly i dont care that much but something about this is fascinating to me

what makes this whole thing so uniquely entertaining (I agree, buckle in) is the truly unprecedented nature of Taylor's career. We've had 1.) consistently critically acclaimed confessional singer-songwriters and 2.) pop icons, but we've rarely had the same entities in one body. Joni Mitchell's album Blue made her world famous, but can you imagine if social media existed in the 70s? The memes alone about Graham Nash and James Taylor would have been unhinged (look up the history of that record-it's Taylor Swift's favorite of all time and "Bigger Than the Whole Sky" is basically her "Little Green"). Even Adele, who is a critically acclaimed confessional singer-songwriter, isn't nearly as PERSISTENTLY high profile as Taylor is, and that's a choice-she ducks out for 5 years straight. Taylor is just too in love with the spotlight and her own ability to manipulate it to go dark for near that long (even the "why she disappeared" period was less than 12 months). I think Adele would genuinely let the fear of tabloid scrutiny make her hesitate to date a famous actor or singer. Taylor would never. As famous as Beyoncé or Justin Bieber or even Lady GaGa is and have been, when it comes to their public perception, they are pop stars, not songwriters (despite Beyoncé's underrated contributions as a writer on her earliest work). Or at least, they were pop stars before they were anything else, and still are to most people. So their love life choices (pre-Lemonade for Beyonce) aren't scrutinized for the purposes of predicting how those choices will directly impact the songs on their next record. Taylor's choices are. Imagine if Madonna was known as a "girl with a guitar" before anything else. Now imagine that Deux Moi existed when she broke up with Sean Penn. So to have someone who has been the undisputed biggest pop star in the world (five million-selling first weeks even in the streaming era) for a remarkably consistent prolonged period of time ALSO be someone who owns all of her publishing and is about to re-release an album of nakedly confessional songs that she wrote entirely on her own....the culture has never grappled with that.

We don’t truly know how Taylor’s and Joe’s relationship was behind closed doors. Even though they were together for over half a decade, there are many things that can cause people to drift apart. Just because it’s taking Taylor a while to find her perfect match doesn’t mean that love isn’t real. Yes, it’s sad that we all thought Joe was the one, and it seemed like happily ever after, but it clearly wasn’t. All that matters is Taylor’s happiness and it seems like she’s doing well. She has a ton of support and I believe she’ll find her “one” someday.

I’m pretty sure they tried to date back in 2013/14 post Harry during the 1989 era but Matty was struggling with addiction and rehab visits etc and they didn’t continue due to that. By the time he was clean, Taylor had met Joe and it was too late to try again. I genuinely believe that Matty has been in love with Taylor for almost 10 years (hence the song ‘about you’, ‘do you think I had forgotten…’ as it’s been 10 years) but obviously out of respect didn’t pursue anything further until Joe and Tay started having problems (late 2022 early 2023 but the breakdown may have started before this). Taylor then worked with Matty for midnights in 2022 and then at the 1975 concert in Jan 2023 they reconnected, maybe things were really bad with Joe and she saw Mattys free spirit/attention and obvious obsession with her and the grass was greener. Then after the official break up (I think early feb) whilst Matty was on a break from tour and in the US for SNL they started hanging out as mates with Phoebe, Jack, Margaret etc I think they’ve been dating since mid feb and are genuinely together now. I think, like you say, they are testing the water with the Nashville shows and see how the fandom responds etc and they’ll go public soon. I think Matty is a really wonderful person and would be good for Taylor. They’re both verrrryyy famous and makes sense with Taylor not wanting to hide away her next relationship. I could be totally wrong but I have to get this off my chest in a safe space as I need to find peace.
