from the netherlands here. dough is both wrong and right about dutch and german being basically the same. historycally we were but we split off (similar how the USA is not part of the UK anymore) we (netherlands) are called the dutch germany calls itself deutschland and they are deutsch. because the english speaking world is incompenent when it comes to pronnouncing none english words, dutch and deutsch were considered to be the same thing hence the confusion when you speak about our countries in english. fun fact the penssilvania dutch as you call them are actually the penssilvania deutsch, because they are of german and not dutch decent. edit: fun fact 2: during your war of independants we smuggled weapons and ammunition into the US to help you fight the english and after the french finally joined we provided them with naval stockades to be able to actually help you guys. we are alsso the first country to have recognised the US independence from the UK, by preforming a cannon sallute as a respince to your ship carrying the declaration of independence, and the second to officially do it by our government istead of jusst a fort that was close by at the time. the american declaration of indepencence is also heavily insspired by our declaration of indepencense. sorry I'm a history buff and after the 4 wars we had with england around that time, very happy to point out our part in their losses :P

Here in the netherlands, it is very annoying to have to pay the import fees ourselves cuz we can't do it ourselves, the postal service provides that as a "service", for which they charge like 20 dollar even on packages worth 5, so the pre-paid taxes that the big international shipping companies now offer are usually way cheaper for everyone involved
@Volther11
@Volther11 Месяц назад
Same in Belgium, the “service” to pay import taxe when taxes are not paid by the seller is 17€ or 10% of the estimated value of the goods (the highest). So for a good estimated at 5$, it’s 18$ service fee + 1$ taxe . Already 19$ + actual shipping cost + correct value of good.

I've dealt with international shipping (e-Bay seller) and there are a few things I think you should do: 1) Someone in Shipping on your end is going to have to research and collect the different shipping laws and tariffs for each country. Yes, it sucks, but when you guys started woodworking you had to learn that too. You have to learn the trade. 2) Figure out what the different categories are for the different items you want to ship. Like 'gemstone dice' versus 'normal dice' etc. Then you see if you can ship the items under a different category. Like when you were talking about shipping stickers as simply a letter. Slap a $5.00 value on it and send it. For dice, try shipping them under Toys or Family Games. The dice are being used for games, after all, so you're not committing fraud. 3) Look for a distributor in Europe or the UK that can handle all of this for you. Sure you'll have to pay them but it might be worth it. Good luck.

I live in one of the countries/regions that Doug did his absolute best to say he doesn't care about for 2 minutes and 19 seconds 😿 🍭 😆. But what you could look into doing is setting up a subsidiary in EU. No internal taxing of VAT in EU and low priced ground shipping as an option. Just bulkship on ships to your subsidiary. I believe the import VAT becomes deductible just as Broman describes. It would also give a better experience for craftsman's promise so we don't have to do two more sooo fun shipping bureaucracy adventures back and forth to the US, when some wood behaved unexpectedly. Remember, EU is a market about the size of USA. I also heard Poland has good woodworkers if that helps. (Not my country though, so take it with a grain of salt.) Your welcome, Doug.

@GraineagGaming Месяц назад
The reason us Belgians complain about this: The way our customs and postal offices work is they add the VAT to the shipping costs as well. If you guys fuck up we have to pay an additional fee just to get it to us. Which is a set fee + an additional fine based on the value of the shipped goods, the VAT the transport cost AND the fee all because they were required to check this. Example: in 2022 i ordered 2 dice vaults + candle. Cost 175$. Shipping 29$. No VAT calculated (which should have been 21% so 42.84$) Import fee: €54.71 (Roughly 60$) That is about 10% added in fines and fees that is spent which could have gone to Wyrmwood if they actually bothered.

Having lived in Europe, the a good middle-ground is to have the plugin on checkout and provide an "Estimated VAT / Import Taxes" that the receiver "may" have to pay, with a "this is only an estimate" clearly communicated, but not charge them on checkout for that extra amount and let them pay it on their own when it arrives. This does two things: a) let's the receiver know that they should expect to pay an additional fee once the product arrives in their country, and b) the estimated amount to expect and keep / save for when that time comes. You'll need to not think like an American for this one - people are used to paying these fees when getting internationally shipped product (unless they're a newly arrived expat). What's really helpful is to know what those costs 'will probably be', so to not be surprised as to the amount, especially for expensive products like what you offer.

After wanting to ship to Germany I was supposed to pay almost 1,300 dollars total, including taxes and shipping, so I also had to decide not to order anything that day and at all for the rest of advent. All I get for Christmases and birthdays is collection of gift cards, so that maybe one day, I am financially able to order anything from you again, other than a tumbler, sleeves and a playmat.

I've lived in several European countries, and so far the worst for imported goods is Norway. If I buy anything from outside of Norway, I have to pay VAT (25%) calculated on the total price of the item(s) and their shipping cost. Add fees from the post office or shipping company (DHL, FedEx, etc.) between US$15-30. To give you an example of Kickstarter rewards: Zombicide ($243.00) + Shipping ($54.00) + VAT ($60.00) + Customs Fees ($15.00) =$372.00 ! A fat 50% increase for the benefit of having the game after it was available in stores... Oh, and I had to give my SSN to the game publisher so they could file the import/tax declaration.

I used to order through a site based in japan because they had the best selection and the prices per kit were the lowest I could find, though the shipping was a little bit high and slow. The last time I looked into ordering through them the shipping cost twice what I was potentially spending on the kits and was for 30-90 day shipping. And that was the cheapest shipping option through them. I've since found new sites, one in florida and one in canada, they cost slightly more per kit but both have flat rate shipping. International shipping is crazy unless you can qualify for freight shipping rates.

American now living in Canada.... FedEx and UPS overcharge by A LOT and often have hidden fees (ie we paid customs for you pay us that plus $20). Best bet is as Doug says, just charge shipping - preferably USPS because then it goes through the country's own postal service - and customs will determine the appropriate tax and import fees if applicable. Sometimes customs doesn't charge anything depending on what it is! If international buyers want something, they will pay the customs but FedEx, USPs, etc., routinely rip international buyers off.

Pay the fee to import said stickers, then have it be distributed in the EU. Better yet, send tables this way, and then in some of the boxes, sneak in a couple hundred or thousand stickers, label them so you (the distributor) can recoup them from the tables, or some lucky Wyrmling accidentally gets 1,000 poozy stickers to save on shipping and import taxes \o/

Royal Mail slap an £8 handling fee onto any parcels they have to collect the VAT on (normally 20% if it's under £130). So your £5 stickers, even if sent as in an envelope for only a few quid, will at least double in price once they add the handling fee to the VAT. It also causes a delay in delivery by around a week as they have to assess the cost, deliver you a slip telling you how much to pay and then you either have to pay online and get it delivered a couple of days later or go to the sorting office during the couple of hours it's open in a morning and pay/collect in person.

Getting the correct customs declaration can truly make a difference. It is definitely worth it for your customers to find the most clear description that no underpaid official is going to slap the wrong bracket on. E.g. I got a book from a Kickstarter once but the label said something like "Kickstarter reward". Thus the post office handling the declaration just filed it as a goods with the default 25% VAT. But VAT on books (in Sweden) is only 6%. There is no process for having them refile the declaration. Once they mess it up, my only recourse as receiver was to pay whatever they decided I had to pay and then go to my closest customs office (which involves travel to one of a handfull of border cities) to file protest after the fact.

🇳🇱Netherlands here. My experience with paying VAT myself varies greatly per shipper. E.g. I just got €6 administrative costs from PostNL to pay VAT, but the highest so far is a €54 administrative bill to pay €10 VAT from DHL. Shippers seem to realize customers don’t really have a choice like declining a prepaid package, so they can invent any charge they want. I would much prefer to pay VAT to you so I don’t get surprise bills later. But yes, import duties and VAT are weird, and different per country and per product type. If you collect this, make sure to do it accurately or countries could request backpay of missed VAT years later.

Buying stuff from outside the EU is a nightmare. You got the actual shipping costs, the "clearance fee" to get it through customs (I think that is only for stuff valued over 150 euro), and depending on what it is you also have excise duties. Only then do you get to the import VAT which is calculated on all those things added together, plus the actual value of the item. So $40 "shipping" for $5 worth of stickers is probably pretty correct unfortunately.
@DimitarSmilyanov
@DimitarSmilyanov Месяц назад
There's plenty of "shipping" or "freight" companies that deal with this nonsense. Just find one and work with them. You throw everything in a shipping container. Once the container is full - you close it, you ship it to Europe. The shipping company imports it somewhere in the EU (most likely Netherlands or Germany), the import taxes of the full container get divided for all clients that have a piece in that container. And then the shipping company sends all packages to the respective countries within the EU (no extra import taxes because of the "free EU market") and clients pay only (1) Cost of item + Sales tax (from the online order), (2) Import tax (very low because it was bulk-imported in the EU with 5000 other items in the container) and (3) shipping cost within the EU (which is already very reasonable)

I’m in the UK. And I’m one of the people who cancelled their table when you messed up shipping the first time. You need to get this right. And it’s not about “describing it in the right way to minimise tax” it’s about describing it accurately so the tariff is correct. In the UK, for playing cards just stick 9504 4000 00 in. For dice 9504 9080 00. An MGT would be 9504 2000 00. But in reality they’re all 20% and it doesn’t matter. The customer pays what the government says they pay. But *you* need to get the shipping costs right.

Here we are super used to that as they charge us 50% of whatever we want to get in, but there is a waived fee under certain conditions met. What Gates point out is key in terms of what can get stopped or inspected at customs, I would rather have something go under gaming supplies or a very looose description of what is, many shipments from China come like this, just a random word of what is and a value which they always put it low. Always fun to see Doug struggle with geography 🥰🥰 Saludos desde Argentina!

im in New Zealand ... got stickers and small stuff my go to would be use a NZ post service that provieds me a local (US, EU, UK shipping adress ) and then reships to me internationally .. they sort out any GST (Goods and services tax -- local version of sales tax or vat) that i need to pay ... but the genral rule here is that if its under about $1000 NZ dollars then we dont pay GST still shipping to NZ is well hideous is almost strong enough

Look into bulk import options to a central hub city of Europe. Then have the goods distributed from there. For example, that $40+ on one sticker pack would probably be the same on a box of 1000 stickers. There'd still be secondary charges to the customer, but the bulk of the upfront government extortion would be diluted substantially.

Plus the volumetric shipping used in air freight would be heaps lower for one box of 1000 stickers vs 200 boxes of 5 stickers. Then it's just fairly cheap ground freight in Europe.

I'm from belgium our country is basically split into 2, you have Flanders and Wallonia one speaks dialect dutch (flemish) the other french(waloons). And yes international shipping is a nightmare, you have to pay VAT and sometimes even shipping costs. if you add them all up it could be double the cost of the original item which is just absurd and in all honestly not worth it.

I live in Finland and the $5 stickers costing close to 40€ for end customer in Europe sounds rather normal. The basic rule I live by - sadly - is that never order outside the EU.. So I don't have to pay the taxes and customs.

PLEASE find a way to do pre-taxation. Me and some friends sometimes ordered stuff from the US and it's a huge pain to get that sorted out. Having to pay is the least annoying part. At least here in germany it's the following: Your package is held back and you have to drive to some customs office to get it - there you have to explain what it is and for whatever reason, it's always your fault that they have no idea how to categorize your items. This can also lead to them needing extra time to sort it out (thanks for driving 30 minutes here - come back in a week or so)

the problem with getting the shipping from somewhere outside of EU into Denmark if you DON'T precalculate and declare it. it will cost a large EXTRA free for the postal service to declare it for you. even if its something without a tax on it. and you can't declare it yourself even if you know exactly what category and amount is owed, and of course the shipping and fee is part of the price being taxed then. Temu and Aliexpress know that nobody wants to buy their cheap stuff if its not cheap. so they cooperate with the EU/Danish customs to pre decleare and deduct the tax on the sale. that way its dirt cheap even if its taxed correctly. but if you let us "figure it out" it will no be close to affordable.

Why not have both options? The cheap one with us post office and the ups. Don´t know how is there, but Mexico post office, you get the package, after a long wait, but the box comes most of the times with bruisers, the one thing that is nice, is that maybe you don´t pay customs taxes, it could be selected by customs or not.

I love to see how Americans just throw 3-4 European countries on top of eachother as if they are "the same". So, here´s a simple overview: - Country: The Netherlands. Region: Western Europe. People: The Dutch. Language: Dutch (Nederlands in Dutch, Germanic in origin) - Country: Germany. Region: Western/Central Europe. People: The Germans. Language: German (Deutsch in German, Germanic in origin) - Country: Denmark. Region: Scandinavian. People: The Danes, Language: Danish (Dansk in Danish, Germanic in origin) I do agree about Belgium though, all Europeans kinda do.

Stickers should be sent by letter, and $5 is below the import duty line, so you'd only have to pay VAT on shipping and handling plus the value of the item. 21% usually. But if you'd even send it in a nondescript envelope, it would most likely just be delivered without any customs involvement.

A problem for the UK at least, I guess other places too, we have to pay a fee to pay the taxes if they are not paid before delivery. For the stickets we'd be paying $1 of VAT plus $15 of fees to pay that dollar.

Just to give you an idea of import taxes and all that BS. I live in uruguay, we can make 3 international purchases of a total of $200 each, it doesn´t need to be a single item, they could be multiple but they must come all in a single shipping. If it cost $100 it doesn't matter, that counts as one of the 3 international purchases, if it cost $15? the same. We use courier companys that give you a P.O. box, you send all the packages there, the total cost can't pass the $200 mark, and they bring the items to the country as a single purchase. What happens to everything that cost more than $200 or if you already made the 3 international purchases? well, that counts as an importation. To give you a ball park price, everything that's imported will cost double when it gets here. If an item is sold for $400 in the US, here in Uruguay will cost around $800, so yeah, import fees suck. I'm saving some place in one of my three $200 international purchases to buy some gyroids, I think it's the only Wyrmwood item I can afford without breaking the bank ha.

Brothers, welcome to Europe. You pay tax, to get back tax, and in the end your business still needs to pay taxes on the taxes you payed but got back. You’ll learn, don’t worry. It takes a year or two of losing a few Ks to get the hang of it.

I'm in the UK here, and yeah, it's really unfortunate that your stuff is so great that I need to keep paying import fees, lol. But yeah, for KS and stuff, try bulk import to a distributor, that's what a lot of other KS I've backed do.
