He started writing the song when his brother passed away. He put it away because he couldn't finish the song. When Keith Whitley passed away it gave Vince the inspiration to finish the song.

That’s wrong. He wrote It won’t be the same without you - for his brother Go rest high was written for Keith Whitley. The lyrics are about Keith’s struggle with alcoholism and his song I’m no stranger to the rain. Gills brother died years after a car crash that left him in a coma with TBI.

“Go Rest High On That Mountain” is one of the greatest songs ever written. You need to listen to the first version with Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless, who is singing the harmonies on this. Everything Patty has done with Vince is so great. Btw, Vince is currently part of the Eagles. Vince is so chill. 💜💜💜

They are both wonderful as solo artists, but when they sing together its magic! Please listen to "Whenever You Come Around". Now we're getting SERIOUS! My wife and I have seen Vince Gill about a dozen times and he never disappoints. A voice that comes along once in a generation. "Colder Than Winter," "Pocket Full of Gold" and "I Still Believe In You" are absolutely essential listening.

You should do the official video, if you can. Vince is amazing! Patty Loveless is singing background for him. At the time, SHE was the big star, and he was trying, after several unsuccessful years in Nashville, to break through. This was his first big hit. He obviously made it! He has a long line of number One hits! He is one of the best guitar players in the history of Country music, too.

Not exactly true. Vince has been in the music business a long time. He was with the pop country group Pure Prarie League in the early 80s. They had at least two big pop hits in 1980 and they were both written by Vince. He also had a big country hit around 86 or 87 with a song entitled Cinderella. It's true that this song and the album it came from was his first mega hit but he had plenty of success before this.

I think the background singer is Patti Loveless. Patti is an awesome country singer in her own right. She's also a cousin of Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle.

Vince Gill is one of my all time favorites. He can play the guitar like no other. I have seen him live 3 times and he sounds just like this. He started in a rock band called Pure Prairie League and is currently touring with the Eagles.

I was privileged to see him in concert once, and I have to say it was the best concert I've ever been too! He played with his band for like an hour, then came back on stage by himself and played for another hour or so just him and his guitars that were set up in a half circle around him! It was amazing and pure! Did you have a similar experience?

My wife and I have seen Vince and his wife Amy Grant do a Christmas concert at the Ryman Auditorium three times. They are wonderful every time. They sound amazing live. And Vince goes off on the guitar on a few of the numbers they do.

He's such a badass that he was asked to join the Eagles after Glenn Frey passed. Which he did. That's Patty Loveless singing backups. And yes, Go Rest High is a necessity. The live version with Patty and Ricky Skaggs is my favorite. Though the George Jones funeral version will make you cry.

You need to watch Vince Gill and Patty Loveless singing at George Jones' funeral. George supported Vince when Vince was an up and coming artist. You guys reacted to George's biggest song, He Stopped Loving Her Today. As expected, George's death hit Vince especially hard. When Vince and Patty attempt to sing Go Rest High Upon That Mountain, the loss is almost too much for Vince to bear.

Fair warning: Go Rest High on that Mountain you NEED to hear this song. But have tissues handy. Vince started to write it for his buddy Keith Whitley when he died, but did not finish it until his own brother died. The original version is with Bluegrass legends Ricky Skaggs and Patty Lovelace. The most poignant version is when he and Patty sang it for their dear friend the great George Jones ' funeral. Both are on YT.

"I Still Believe In You" is another amazing Vince song.. he just has SO many, though! And the song you referenced, "Down to the River to Pray" was Alison Krauss, who just happens to sing with Vince on "Go Rest High on that Mountain" along with bluegrass star, Ricky Skaggs - check out the LIVE version to hear why he wrote the song. Vince Gill is an Oklahoma boy. He and Jimmy Webb wrote a song for Oklahoma's Centennial back in 2006. My favorite songs is "When my Amy prays" which he wrote for his wife Amy Grant. She sings contemporary Christian music. I love her. Vince Gill has been touring with the Eagles on the anniversary tour of Hotel California.

The song that you MUST listen to is “Brighter Days!” It’s absolutely breathtaking from the moment he opens his mouth. He is SOOOO AMAZING AND TALENTED AND HUMBLE AND his voice is soooo SOULFUL! Vince Gill is one if the best singers out there plus an all around good guy. I have never heard anyone say anything against him. Check out Go Rest High On That Mount for some more feels. He was writing it in memory of Keith Whitley who had passed, and then his brother passed too. The song ended up being in memory of them both. There's also a video of him singing it at George Jones' funeral. It will bring a tear to a glass eye.

You're reaction to Vince's voice was about the same as mine after hearing 'I Still Believe in You' for the first time on the radio years and years ago. Was able to see him three or four times in concert. Not only a great singer, guitarist and song writer, he's a great story teller as well. He's worked with so many other singers and musicians from practically every genre of music, he has at least one story to go along with each of them. Or something that happened during his many years of touring. Most are really funny and/or touching. Most of his hits are slow sad songs, but there are some great faster ones too. Like Liza Jane, Oklahoma Borderline and High Lonesome Sound. He's sung on many duets and his partners on them have included Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, Barbra Streisand and Amy Grant (a famous Christian singer he had a hit on the pop charts with called House of Love and he later married- they are still together). The song he'll likely be most remembered for is Go Rest High on that Mountain, as mentioned in several other comments. Hope you check out the original video for it, singing with Patty Loveless and Ricky Scaggs. In the comment section for that video are literally hundreds of stories from people who were helped or comforted by the song after losing a family member, friend or other loved one.

Vince Gill is great and has a very deep rabbit hole to go down with amazing music. This is one of his best. Patty Loveless is singing backup on this song and many more of Vince's song's. He got her started in the business. God slapped Patty Loveless on the voice because she has an amazing voice and is also beautiful. She is another big rabbit hole y'all have to check out. Her song " A Thousand Times a Day" is to me one of her best check it out. Amber I know how much you love Dolly. Well Patty Loveless will be your favorite of the late 80s and early 90s. You guys also need to react to Patty Loveless. She is the lady singing harmony with Vince in this song. I promise you you will be mesmerized by her as well. Some songs that I would recommend would be "blame it on your heart", " how can I help you say goodbye", " chains" and "don't toss us away" which features Rodney Crowell on harmony vocal.
