I moved from the US to Canada and became a Canadian citizen. One day, two poll workers showed up at our door to make sure we knew we had the right to vote and that we knew how to cast our vote. Imagine my surprise.

Yes, welcome. BTW, when you vote in Canada (throughout the whole country) you have a paper trail for each vote casted. No possibilities of voting machines being hacked by Russia (Trump). Almost forgot, ALL votes are counted. Our post-office can’t be paid off to accidentally misplace votes so that they are not counted nor do we have gun wheeling tugs intimidation to discourage people from exercising their right to vote. Again, welcome to our civilized country.

Reading the above piece on ballots being counted, in Canada, I was reminded of reports of ballots having been discarded for questionable reasons, in the recent past. In my want to empower voters, I'd added the above links highlighting possisble voter suppression--due to ostensibly mis-filled circles on ballots--along with effective voting practices, toward inviting awareness around the need to be specific with filling out future ballots. ... That--respectfully--voting in Canada may not be as simple as voting, unfortunately, but that being deliberate about it may help get the job done. Sorry about being vague; I've noticed that I've left entire replies mid-edit, recently, so I'd erred on the side of quickly adding reference material. Regards to you & yours.

What is it with Americans? They're told the voting system in Canada is much easier and more transparent and they're like..."Oh no, I don't like that. The states should decide!" Then several admit it's going to be a s--t show. Oh, but their system is better. No wonder they've become a laughing stock.

Yup, one huge contributing factor to the stagnation and decline of the United States of America is the belief that they are the best in the world at everything. Indeed, how can you improve on something which is perfect? Or look for inspiration in inferior countries? Or as many proud Americans like to say "the worst day in America is better than the best day anywhere else!", which is typically followed by a tribal chant of "USA - USA - USA" or shoutings of "FREEDOM!", uttered in the belief that no other parts of the globe enjoys said freedom. Nationalism truly makes one blind.

Hey, don't knock American exceptionalism if you haven't tried it. It's a bit of a rush and quite empowering. We've had multiple generations of practice at it, we're really quote good at it. It allows us to make something so simple as casting a vote and making it as complicated as humanly possible and still see it as the best possible system. Voting is a mess in this country because Americans want innovation, competition and the free market system. There are many different ways to skin a cat and to conduct a vote of the people. The development and sale of of voting systems is a very lucrative industry in this country and there are any number of companies in the business that are happy to keep it that way.

@@jonathanvanier there's nothing wrong with loving one's country or taking pride in one's country. But when you think your country can't learn anything from anybody else, that's it's the best, the greatest, etc., that begins the long steep decline.

@@erikswanson5753 - Oh I absolutely agree with you. That's why I used "nationalism", which the Oxford dictionary defines as "identification with one's own nation and support for its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations". As you can tell, it's the later part of the definition that irks me, as it also implies the "we're better than anyone else" tribal mentality. But being proud to be Canadian, or indeed American, no problem with that. As long as you keep level headed and appreciate that other countries could have one or a few good things to teach you.

That's normal in the USA too. My country is extremely abnormal right now....to the point that it's becoming NOT the USA...which started a few years ago when it took left turn onto a bumpy road to hell.

Add to that, no Canadian citizen has stressed for weeks leading up to an election due to fear of rigging. Well, at least in my life time, I'm pretty sure there has been some shady stuff in the Upper and Lower Canada days.

@@laingadaing Our media is paid by our system, not the government in power. They do serve to attempt to unit Canadians rather than divide and that does not sit will with some. I'm grateful for the CBC and hope we can hold off the defund the CBC people for another generation. We have a pretty clear example to our south of what a private media system looks like.

And which government r u referring to? The Conservatives? The Liberals? Does this mean the NDP and Green Party should be given a kick at the can to pay for our radical cultural icon media stations? And who cares who broke what story first? Unless u r the one getting the scoop and the company bonus, I’m sure we can find examples of thousands of “scoops” our national media picked up first and ran with, only to be followed by world counterparts. This is how we vote in Canada. We leave our house, walk across the street, go in the school, sometimes we have to walk to a different school, cast our votes by putting an x beside the person we want, chat to neighbours, go home and order pizza.

We get to keep our little pencils this year (Saskatchewan provincial election) because of COVID. The other beautiful thing is having our voter registration updated every year just by filing our taxes.

Maryanne Slater we're in Regina and voted early - Saturday Oct 24 - there were 2 people leaving as we were arriving and 2 people arriving as we were leaving - it took maybe 5 minutes max - we didn't get to keep our pencils though - we had to "drop them in the bag" 😕😆

Denmark votes the same as Canada with a few minor changes and add ons. We open at 7 am and closes at 8 pm. If you can’t vote in person two election workers will help you at home. Or where you are.

Here in Canada, we make sure our Long-Term Care residents can also have access to voting. We make sure a polling stations is placed in Long Term care homes.

My dad was at home and couldn't get to the polls so Elections Canada sent two people to get his vote. We do that too. You get time off on voting day from work and there are so many polling stations that the line up (if there is one) is not long. We also have several days people can vote early in their ridings. It is very well organized and yes we physically mark a ballot with a pencil/marker. In the States they do have several more choices to make on a ballot so it may take longer but those lineups shouldn't be happening.

I like that you can have election workers come to your home. If I get a migraine on election day, I'd much rather have someone come to me than go to the polls.

Canada actually has a 12:00 window, almost like the 13:00 hour window u say Denmark has. The talk in the video reference the added complication for Canada, of the country being so wide. Meaning we have 6 different time zones, and in an effort to have the result come in at the same time, PEI suffers the most as it has to be the tardiest one to join given how advanced they are on BC. Also Election Canada makes all possible arrangements for people who can’t make it in person. So there is virtually no differences on the points you mention. Only that Canada has to coordinate 6 different times zones.

Elections Canada sets the voting districts not political parties and they are reviewed and only revised if necessary. No campaigning can start till an election is called and there is about a 3 month time limit on the campagn. You file tax return you check off a box to be a registered voter, you get a confirmation card weeks before the election that you can show with id to vote. Also the one with the most votes is the winner Its all very simple really.

Canada has first-past-the-post, like the US. So the party with the most votes may not necessarily win. In the last provincial election in New Brunswick, for instance, the Liberals had the majority of votes but still lost to the Conservatives by one seat.

The party with the most votes isn’t necessarily the winner and the amount of seats a party gets (ie the amount of power they get) often isn’t close to what the popular vote is. Most obviously seen by the Green Party that only has 3 seats in the house but won 6.5% in the popular vote. If it was proportional to the amount they got in the popular vote they would have gotten 22 seats. Way better than the American system though but not great

@@Tman20rox Trudeau betrayed us. His election promise was to implement proportional representation, but as soon as he was elected, he made some lame excuse against electoral reform. I would never ever trust him again. Never.

@@creativeandaliveat65 - First of all, the Liberals never promised "proportional" voting, but rather "preferential" voting, like in Australia. The Conservatives wouldn't agree to that, because it's not advantageous to them, so the project was tabled, since by constitutional custom you need unanimity in the House of Commons to change a fondamental element of electoral laws (otherwise any party with a simple majority could rewrite election laws to favour themselves if they wished). And personally, "proportional" elections are the kind of thing that sounds good in theory, but unleash instability in practice: all the countries in the world that have them have unstable governments and extremist parties holding disproportionate influence (looking at you Israel). I'd have been fine with a "preferential" system, but I'll happily tolerate the distortions of first-past-the-post elections over the even worst distortions brought forth by "proportional" systems.

@@jonathanvanier proportional representation was promised, and to achieve that we'd use preferential ballots. Idk what you're talking about, but you seem to have your terms confused. Other than that, you're correct. Cons wouldn't have let that pass, but you're incorrect in implying that a legislature with a more accurate degree of representation is inherently unstable. I'd like a source on that?

I just helped as a supervisor in the Canadian by election (Ontario) and it took people 2-5 minutes from start to finish (from coming into the door to walking out) on average to vote

This video is not representative of America. It varies widely from state to state, but in all Democratic states it is very easy to vote. My state conducts elections 100% by mail, which is far easier and better than the Canadian system. Our system of state-by-state freedom allows that to happen.

In BC the BC Liberals (conservatives.. go figure) had ads out saying that proportional representation would elect extremists. Then they lost the provincial election, but won the popular vote and immediately started to ask about what proportional representation actually means... Oh well. I just choose to vote on the local level because the person in Ottawa has never been my vote.

Same in Germany btw. paper ballots, everybody votes the same way, enough polling places opening the same time and closing the same time, no need to register because everybody is registered anyway (compulsory registration at your place of residence)...

I'm a Brit. Years ago I ticked a box to say I wanted a postal ballot. It's sent to me for all local council elections and main general elections. Put an x in the box and post it back, and that's it. Each year on the run up to an election I get a form saying do you still want a postal ballot, I say yes and it arrives later. America's systen is beyond a joke.

Another thing we do better is limit how much money can be spent in political campaigns and ensure that every party does get air time. Think of all the money spent in the US elections that could be better spent on fixing their myriad of problems but instead it spent on trying to buy political positions and power. Another thing we seem to handle better is the results of our elections without feeling like they have been tampered with. But then again, a demagogue like the one in the US would have probably lost their right to speak publicly in Canada for inciting hatred and our news outlets are required to report accurately. I am so proud of our protections in our country for our elections and elected officials that makes what has happened in the US impossible in Canada.

I used to be an American. Parts of it are really great. But I am a Canadian now, and can barely imagine ever moving back to the US. What a mess down there. I fear for the safety of my American relatives. Here, health care for everyone ensures a way lower stress level about getting ill, and the country is way better socialized....in the sociology sense of the word. Like, we have a shared community. All in it together, really. Yay, Canada. Good luck, USA.

Elections are done on hand counted paper ballots. They take 6 weeks to 2 months. They can be initiated by a vote of non-confidence. We’ve had Medicare for All since 1965 thanks to a feisty little Scottish Democratic Socialist named Tommy Douglas (Kiefer Sutherland’s grandfather.) You guys will never have that simple luxury. Too busy putting profits before people. Good luck with that.

Because Americans have been fed their whole lives this fantasy that they're "the greatest country in the world" (and few of them travel internationally). So any notion that they might CHANGE anything or IMPROVE anything is considered un-patriotic or something. And God forbid someone suggests emulating the positive example of some other country -- obviously you hate America and are probably a commie or something.

@@shannonfrattura2029 There are many examples of things being done in the USA that serve to suppress voting , and muddy up the results . There is a fair amount of gerrymandering . In some states like Alabama , voting stations are closed when additional ones are needed. Names are being struck off voting lists if people haven`t voted , even though they are still citizens , and should be eligible to vote . In some states absentee ballots are only partially counted.

Rick Mercer used to do a fabulous version of “Talking to Americans”. It was so telling how little they know about their neighbour to the North. With all the Trump shenanigans over the last four years, it has become apparent that so many Americans barely even know what’s going on in the next county or State in their own country, much less the world!

I have voted in every election since I turned 18. I have never waited more than 15 minutes. This last provincial election here in BC, I literally took 3 minutes which included parking and walking my elderly mother up to the voting booth. I love my Canada. We are the true beacon of democracy in the world.

If this is the beacon of democracy then democracy is an inherently flawed system... Look at the failures of our current leadership and pat yourself on the back for democracy. People re-elected a PM guilty of multiple ethics violations (three which have been investigated). Oh ya, and he even though he lost the popular vote... Let’s shut down parliament during the pandemic to end the investigation into our shady contributions to WE charity. Let’s not table a budget for 18 months after being elected and spend money like it’s going out of style. Let’s rack up a trillion dollar federal deficit.... Ya were doing realllllll wel in Canada...

I've worked in a manager's role for Elections Canada several times. The system is well thought out and organized. The paper trail with checks and balances would make it extremely difficult to cheat. Machines and digital technology can be hacked or programed. Would never recommend that equipment. Plus a standard voting system is a no brainer. The State's need to figure it out for themselves is a weak argument. Voting is simple, make it a action simple. Just takes a lot of organizing to manage to make it successful.

also worked for Elections Canada. It's not enough to say it's be difficult to cheat, it's practically impossible. In fact the only way I see cheating as being remotely possible is doing the swearing in to assist someone who requires it and then forcing them to cast a vote for one's own party. Obviously highly highly unlikely to happen. The main issue between the US elections and Canadian elections that I see not mentioned here is the international oversight. Canada sends people to various foreign elections to help ensure the democratic process is being carried out properly. I do not believe that the US is involved in this program...

There is also the issue of how difficult it is to get registered as a voter in Canada, just kidding, you just check the box on your taxes that asks if you want to be registered as a voter, when an election comes along they send you a card that you take to the pole with some Id, and you vote.

I've worked as a registration officer for elections Canada, you just need proof of address and ID. And in the event you don't have those someone who is on the voterr list can sign a voucher for you stating that they know you live in the district. Elections Canada tends to err on the side of making it easier for people to vote, and only double check suspicious ballots when there's a recount.

I've voted in 3 European countries... UK, France and Ireland. I've never had to wait more than a minute or two to vote. Exit poll published as last polling station closes usually gives a clear idea of the result. Why do Americans put up with this madness.

In my state we have no ID required, automatic voter registration when people get driver's licenses, and 100% vote by mail (i.e. polling places don't exist). Vastly superior to the Canadian system.

Australia is similar to canada. Schools and other halls with paper voting, so there is a record. It take about 10 minutes usually. No voter supression, you actually get fined if you don't vote. You can vote by mail, in advance and absentee votes if you are in another area.

In Washington State everyone is mailed a ballot and a thorough voter guide. Then you sit at the kitchen table eating a snack while filling it out. After that you put it in your mail box to be picked up, or to a central drop box if you want. It’s incredibly convenient, with a lot of relevant information in the guide to help people make better decisions, and has a built in paper trail. While the Canadian system is superior in many ways to other states, I think Elections Canada should take a good long look at the Washington State model.

@@striatic we don't need to look at that we go to that place that is often really near our homes (our jobs have obligation to give us a few hours to go vote) it's all on the same day and the voting place are all closed at the same time and counted right there. mailing our vote would mean to wait until it arrives ( if it's not lost) so about 3 days for some places, fill the document after reading it, go outside and mail it (hopefully it won't be lost) and then they have to wait a few days to have all the votes and then count them....that's stupidly inefficient...

I’m from a third world country and I have to admit how surprised and delighted I was the first time I voted in Canada. Weeks before the election, I received a letter from the government with the date, time and location of my polling station. It also had dates and places for advance voting. Either way, you’d find yourself done in minutes with no dramas whatsoever. You just smile at each other, wave to somebody you know and you’re done. One time I volunteered to watch the counting, same thing, no hassle, all pleasant people from all parties. I hope and pray it’ll stay that way.

The longest it has ever taken me to vote was an hour, but that was because a friends mom was at the polling station and I ended up talking to her for at least 45 min. Got back home and everyone was "what took you so long" and when I told them they just asked me how she was doing. I've never had a problem. Gotta love being Canadian.

I like the way my county does it now. Computer to select the candidates/initiatives, then it prints out a paper ballot of the selections made, which the voter then feeds into the scanner themselves. You get the convenience of having an electronic machine tallying, with the security of a paper ballot should the system go down. I think more places should switch to this hybrid model.

I moved to Canada nine years ago and obtained citizenship a few years after. I learned about the voting system from my colleague and the Election Canada website. I only had to register once for my very first election, then my voter registration card arrived in mail prior to all subsequent elections. All information is clearly laid out and because I live in a condo downtown, my voting station is literally downstairs, in the building lobby. No line up, no confusion. This year's by-election in particular, because I was working from home, I simply just popped down during lunch time to cast my vote. Compare this to how Americans were lining up for hours upon hours to vote, and how they have to register each time, it just baffles me. I imagine if I had immigrated to the USA, I would be very confused and probably be not so inclined to vote. I'm very glad that Canada has made the most important way for people to exercise their civic duty so easy and accessible.

The first time I voted I was 19 and in the hospital. The Canadian Elections poll workers came to my room and let me vote from my hospital bed! I'm so thankful to live in Canada! Not only did I not have to worry about the cost of the stay (it was free), but I didn't have to worry about what I had to do to be eligible to vote or where to cast my ballot

We Canadians don't quite vote the same way. We vote for each city or towns representative for the party that we want in as prime minister. Then they count up the votes for each side and the side with the most votes seats the selected person for prime minister. We don't have an electrical college, so it's just the popular vote here. In fact the U.S. is the only country that I know that uses an electrical college, not just the popular vote.

I love working for Elections Canada 🇨🇦 ... I’m a Central Poll Supervisor. The day is long but we manage to physically greet everyone in French & English (and other languages as determined by our electoral district’s demographics) we have everything organized , we count all the votes with our hands & brains (faster than machines) ... then at the end, we triple check our work (with 5 scrutineers breathing down our necks) ... and, we are done, & ready for the late night news too! We keep it simple & don’t ask a a bunch of referendum/ other questions on the ballot either.

Maine and much of New England is more Canadian than parts of our western provinces sadly. The ties between New England and Eastern Canada are blood deep, lots of families crossed the border between nations like county lines in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I'd still like to see Canada bring in proportional representation. We did a mock vote at our school, and I had some fun trying to explain to my grade 8 class how Trudeau/Liberals won the last federal election even though the Conservatives received more votes, and while the BQ only had about 200 000 more votes than the Green party, the BQ ended up with more than 10X the seats in the House of Commons than the Greens did.
