Dude, I love watching your homestead vids. So gratifying. The homestead on a hillside thing is the ticket. Gravity fed water that's filled by a solar powered pump -- ideal solution. Endless water for free (okay - except the materials and the TON of work to get it built, but that's "a good price to pay.") A couple extra pumps, a replacement solar panel or two, some extra pex/poly pipe -- you're good to go for generations. The permaculture things you can do with sculpting the land for water to flow down your hill, from holding pond to garden, through swales and orchards, to the paddocks, the birds, to rice paddies with ducks (research that) to a fish pond and the house -- with fire suppression and all the other good stuff -- it's amazing. You can turn that hillside into a garden of Eden over time. Best part -- you've built in the water -- now you can just add to the plan each year. Try to plan in your long-term permaculture design now, so even if you don't do big parts of it for years, your know where things will go. And keep that charcoal from your burn piles -- amazing soil ammendment, as I'm sure you know -- loads you can do with biochar. You're living a dream I've had for years. I'm sure there are plenty of days where you curse that hill, but the ability to have water flow down through your Eden -- and that view -- I'd kill for a property like that. Can't do many of those things on my flat place, but we'll get our hillbilly retreat one fine day. Love your progress and really appreciate you sharing the technical details and evolution of your thought process -- super helpful for guys like me who will also tackle this one day -- keep it up! :-)

"Water does not resist. Water flows. When you plunge your hand into it, all you feel is a caress. Water is not a solid wall, it will not stop you. But water always goes where it wants to go, and nothing in the end can stand against it. Water is patient. Dripping water wears away a stone. Remember that, my child. Remember you are half water. If you can't go through an obstacle, go around it. Water does." ― Margaret Atwood, The Penelopiad

You are so correct about water. Go without it for a few days and see what happens. You are a true conservationist. That attitude is the only way we will save this beautiful planet our creator gifted to us. I hope what you are promoting catches on. Takes a lot of courage to do what you have and are doing.

I worked with kids at a primitive skills outdoor program in Utah. I can relate to the desperate feeling when your water source doesn’t work out after a long day hiking. Use pre cast concrete retaining wall blocks (big ones 2x4 ft). They are not cheap but will last forever and if you paint them with black sealer they will retain enough heat to keep things from freezing. You can also add a large window on the south side so that when the sun angle is low it will shine on the tank to help keep it from freezing.

The tire "earth-ship" idea sounds awesome, and quite eco-friendly. Using them instead of them going into a landfill is smart and ecologically much better. The breakdown time for tires being well past your great-great-grandchildren's lifetimes had me rooting in that direction. If course, you'll have to make the decision based on what's best for your family right now as well. Can't be replacing tanks and fittings because of freeze damage.
@smalltownwireless
@smalltownwireless 5 лет назад
Earth Ship for the win! Take that time and call it learning and connecting with the family. Time spent working on something is always worth more than spending money on something easy, and after you are done, you will look back and say that was hard but easy, as it calmed the brain and built a bond of one more things that you will never say "I wish I did that". Amazing video!

Strawbale shed for the water tank - that will provide both insulation & structure.... Maybe a combination of earthship & strawbales. Stack strawbales, drive rebar through them to anchor them, then plaster with adobe. You can put some beams over the top of the structure to hold some metal roofing... Quick & cheap with huge insulation value.

@lucasriley874 5 лет назад
You'll want to add some type of tie down system, steel banding ect to compress the bales, they do settle a fair bit over time. Probably not a huge concern if it's only for a single season. Also need to consider potential vermin problems, if anything can chew/dig/tunnel through your render you've just made the perfect habitat for any number of creatures/insects. Having said that many people have found ways to make strawbale construction work so it's not a bad idea.
