I had a doctor. For 10 years. She saved my life. She never wore a hijab and I had no idea that she was Muslim. I went to see her one day and she was wearing a burqua with just a portion of her face uncovered. This woman was placed in jail by her husband. For 10 years he never worked a day but to set at the front desk telling the girls who worked there what to charge the patients. He hired a non-muslim doctor to see all of her patients that were not Muslim essentially cutting her off of any communication with non-muslims. I still worry about her. After 7 years.

In London after the New Zealand attack. There was Muslim women on the streets asking western women to try on the hijab in support of New Zealand. (1) how did that support those in New Zealand. (2) There was a lot that did this stupidity without a blink of the eye.

I am an American woman and I have a child with a Muslim though we only dated a few years. I once asked him why women in Muslim countries are sometimes stoned to death for being raped. He explained that it is better for them because when a woman is raped it is like taking a dish and throwing it on the ground, it shatters into many pieces and while you can try to put it back together, it will never work right again. I then tried to tell him how I was gang raped a few years prior and he suggested that it was probably because of something I did to deserve it. He's not altogether wrong, I naively stayed at a party with a bunch of people I didn't know. I don't think I deserved what happened but I should have been more careful. But still what a person needs after such an event is not accusations or a stoning but understanding, support and in most cases professional help. I didn't seek help, I was ashamed and I just tried to bury it all, which was a big mistake as wounds like that if not treated can fester and become infected and poison the entire psyche. So muslims, please don't stone your women (or men) to death for such things, get them psychological treatment so they can heal.

I totally agree, the hijab is oppressive but consider for a moment how hard it would be to go out in public without it if you have been wearing it for years; it would be like most non muslims would feel if they had to walk down the street naked. I have heard some muslim women say they would like to take it off but don’t feel comfortable. Of course they don’t, they have been conditioned over many years. Some of those who want to stop wearing the hijab are going to need support even if they are not being compelled to wear it.

A childhood friend of mine was forced to wear hijab by her parents. And not like normal hijabs, the pure black ones. It's really sad, because I know she was an open minded girl - she didn't talk about religion at all. Knowing that I won't be able to contact her because of a stupid idea that makes women literal slaves really makes me sick. And she will have no life, probably is going to get sold or forced to marry a sick minded man and will live her life obeying 3 men, this is a very real issue and should not be tolerated. Women who think wearing hijab is a choice don't know how women in Islamic societies are brainwashed and are basically raised to think that all men want to rape them and they should cover themselves because they cannot protect themselves. It cannot be a free choice when the idea is forced from childhood.

Years ago I had a friend called Fatima. We shared good conversations and a love of Irish music. She went to do Haj and came back and came back a pious Muslim wearing a hijab and giving up higher education. She also gave up her friendship with me and sent back all the music I had given her via an acquaintance. She was clever and funny. Islam took that person away and out of view of the world. Such a waste of potential.
