The family of legendary Pittsburgh Steeler Mike Webster discuss why they are not getting money in the NFL's concussion settlement; KDKA's David Highfield reports.
Its not rocket science . You get hit in the head thousands of times and you end up with brain damage. Unless your a complete idiot who the heck cant figure that one out.
Not really . Whats the difference between that and boxing ? Repeated blows to the head cause brain trauma . Its been known for years. Pugilistic Dementia
Very sad story. He was one of our heroes growing up. I only ever played football in Jr n Sr highschool. They didn't have protocol like now. 78-82 got my bell rung a few times. Either giving or taking a hit ,it's still the same feeling.
Yea, The basis of this settlement was for players like Mike Webster. In fact, Mike Webster is the face of the settlement. He was one the main characters in the movie concussion. The Webster’s not only should be involved in the settlement. They should be the first to get paid.
ESPN had a (very sad) series of articles about Iron Mike and CTE. He had probably more than $4M when he retired, but the money evaporated in bills and bad investments. The family lost their house and the Websters divorced partly because none of them knew how to pay bills or balance a checkbook. It seems a lot of pro athletes spend and spend with no thought of the future, until the checks stop.
@@grannyp.w.4343 Im sorry and I am very emphatic towards anyone that has to go through this...but with 4 mil in the bank and if you recieved any part of that 1.5 million dollar lower court settlement. Sadly the money was mismanaged and squandered away. Some folks just dont know how to manage large sums or any money in general.
@@grannyp.w.4343 If you are the real Pam Webster - don't waste your precious time, emotions, and energy with trolls like these on social media. Your story is finally being told and better understood by news media and your cause and claim are just. Can't imagine those painful years through Mike's decline and ever since his early death. You and your family went through the trauma of CTE with Mike. Nobody else has. For the NFL to have ignored it when Mike was a marquis name of the League for decades is shameful. The league and every owner should pony up to help cover the expenses associated with the gladiators' care after they earned countless millions of dollars on their blood, sweat, and family tears.
In all honesty, the NFL and NHL and any heavy contact sport league needs to do more to take care of their former players. While I’m not denying the players make a lot of money, they’re also making a lot of money for the owners. And as these guys get older, the effects of their careers start to show. These leagues need to be held accountable.
family who losta father gets nothing but that same man saved many more people because of what happened to him. very sad that money is more important than what he did in his life and after he died
There is a saying in the NFL--------"The NFL stands for not for long". With Mike Webster's death at 50 years old, -----------his death gives a whole new meaning to the saying.
Not defending the nfl but the Websters won a large cash settlement in 2006 for cte and was the first family to get a large sum of money from cte. Look it up
You were right, once I included the year 2006 in my search I did find it the Webster family supposedly got $1.5 million from a lower court settlement. www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/steelers/2012/11/16/nfl-concussions-mike-webster/1710567/
That woman divorced the poor guy after he got sick forcing him to live in a car and now she wants to make millions off of his condition? I hope she does'nt get one dime.
Stephen Koenig once read a book that said he wasnt the best husband bc of cte. you dont know what they had to go through. they just thought he was being a bad father.
CTE patients are often angry and violent. It's not their fault, but anyone around them can be subjected to their outbursts, both verbal and physical. But you keep being a judgmental little prick.
What a terrible thing to hope for. Check this out Stephen Koening.... Possibly the divorce STEMMED from his condition. Did you ever consider that? Imagine her life dealing with his condition as he sank lower and lower into the abyss and being unable to help him (and yes, she tried). I took one look at her eyes in the interview there and I didn't see a greedy person trying to get a windfall of money.. she more or less resembled someone who came through a natural disaster or a hurricane and has been struggling ever since. Sure, people should always try and get back up on their feet but the sad truth of the matter is, the NFL is a multi billion dollar money monster and they could surely assist the wife of someone who literally ended up giving his life for the game. Compounding the situation for the Websters is the mere fact that back in Mike's playing days... the paychecks given to players was literally peanuts by comparison to today's payroll---- which is based on the huge media market contracts. Those contracts actually existed back then.. the NFL just did not share the revenue. If anything the NFL should compensate 1,000's of players from the 60s, 70's and 80's who they profited off of who ended up with a lifetime of struggle for whatever injury or issue that developed after their playing days. However, getting back to what you said, I don't think it's fair to judge her so harshly, after all you have no idea what she possibly went through with Mike leading up to the divorce. I don't sense she was being cruel or vindictive... but maybe out of self preservation.. or maybe she didn't really know what to do. I'm not so sure anyone could have helped Mike towards the end.... not even Mike himself.
vccstudents I dont think the movie royalties are the problem here. The movie was made to expose the case and the NFL, not to take responsability out of the league.
@@marcopena7638 I'm not arguing that. I'm saying what everyone else is saying. Mike Webster is the reason we even know about this illness, yet his family is getting no settlement. If I was making that movie, I'd have said, "Hey, NFL, I'm doing what you should have done."
What happened to the settlement they already got reportedly nearly $1 Million from the Pension Case the Estate brought against the NFL and won in 2005? Also why does his wife think she deserves to be paid? She divorced Mike 6 months before he died?
@O T Never answered what happened to the Million she already got AFTER he had died. Who doesn't have a clue? You certainly haven't demonstrated any special knowledge or insight to me. Did you sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night too?
As I am A Pittsburgh Steelers Fan. And to learn of his decline in how the N F L OWNER'S COULDN'T EVEN TAKE A SERIOUS LOOK AT IRON MIKE WEBSTER'S Life after Football, TO NOT CARE AT ALL !? IS MORE THE EGREGIOUSNESS OF THE N F L. AND TO NOT INCLUDE HIS FAMILY TO HELP THEM ? GREEDY SO AND SOOOS ! GOD BLESS IRON MIKE AND HIS FAMILY.
"Do you know what Mike Webster's wife said? She said that if she knew that Mike was sick.....she would have done more for him. But he died in disgrace. Your man, YOUR man. You took an oath, tell the truth!"
@@jimhershey5487 People get divorced all the time. You weren't there so you don't know. I'm guessing you are some fervent Catholic who still thinks its the 16th century and hands over their entire being to a church that wants to control every move you make. The Catholic Church is no more legitimate than any other, and they are all just in it for the money and power it gives them in this world. They don't know any more about the next world than anyone else
I sure hope the NFL settled up with the Websters...........if anything, even if they don't qualify under the agreement, surely the NFL could simply settle with these people outside of the agreement's parameters..........
Of course it’s for you.. what does getting a billion dollar settlement “help” his legacy. His legacy will be there regardless of that. One could argue that the NFL is responsible for Mike’s injury but how so? No one knew that stuff back then and no one knew the outcome and he choose to play.. he was not forced. I’d like to also state that my grandfather was really good friends with mike and it’s very sad to see this happen to someone, let alone someone as legendary as mike. But I think it would be just and nice for the NFL to compensate his family but they have no moral or legal obligation to.
Got Damn It Didn't We Tell Us That This Is The Great Day Of Awakening And Everything Hidden Shall Be Revealed Didn't We? And Guess Who Exposed This TRUTH To The World? It Was The ORIGINAL MAN HIMSELF! Hahaa! My, My, My, My, My We Had Better Listen In Order To Comprehend Instead Of Understand Cause It Is Lonely Beneath The TRUTH Of Redemption! WE ARE ORIGINAL PEOPLE OF CREATION! #POOC
I'm so glad Dr.Bennet Omalu's didn't just settle for a basic autopsy... He went further and further to prove his theory. Which proved to be correct. From my understanding Mike Webster died broke and homeless. So why would anyone benefit from these findings? If you weren't there for him in LIFE, don't try to profit from his DEATH... ONLY his Son should receive something to me...
IF someone put a gun to my head, and $3 Million "an offer I can't refuse" to represent the one who was accused of killing his ex-wife and her friend, I'd say CTE caused his rage. Not that I would want to defend that player.
Have Wayne and Jerry show what they did to that guy in the backseat of his car back when I met them alk at the Prarie breeze bar on 15th street I am a witness to two possible murders by them not me.
I don’t think his x wife should get nothing at all for loving him for what he was Going threw. Now she’s trying to pin her nose in to the situation because theirs money involved please lady go some where and play like you can’t see. Because you clearly divorced this man. So now that you see millions of dollars you have something to say. No his children should get it not her
I dont get it. He knew the dangers.. but did not care.. if you told iron mike to quit football because what it was doing to his brain.. he would not quit.. so why the sympathy??
False. He didn't know the dangers because he was the first player diagnosed. The players never knew about this and one of the conditions for the NFL's settlement was that they didn't have to reveal when they found out about a brain disease caused by concussions. It's absolutely sick, predatory behavior on the part of the NFL, especially when you consider that they subsidize kids football and that you're more likely to get CTE if you start playing young.
So glad you can speak for what Mike Webster knew and didn't know, would have done or wouldn't have done. Considering that CTE wasn't even a diagnosis until AFTER Webster died, I would say you are ignorant and opinionated. In other words, you're a fool.
@@IanMcD204 dude I was 12 playing football and I knew it wasn't good to get hit in the head that was in the early 80's...It's not rocket science geez...
The x wife should get nothing for leaving him. The children should get it all. It’s kinda of crazy how money hungry ass women come out the blue when theirs money involved and never played a down in her life, but left this man due to what he was going threw. Shame on her for not being their with him threw those tuff times
The Rooneys should step the Fk up on this........Where is the class everyone brags about with this organization ? ..............CTE SUCKS !!!... from Cleveland....Stay Browns ! .....ET
ALL respect was LOST by myself with the nfl thieves and liars, quality on all accounts period, their actions are clear use and dispose people like note paper. How anyone can justify it, the nfl are sick. I don't follow the game anymore because it's not a game, no it's all about entertainment giving the people thrills week after week year after year, like a roller-coaster ride. Now gambling is allowed , so now refs and players take pay offs to bring about who wins who loses, it just another WWF wrestling show. Winners and losers already decided
