I attended my cousin's wedding and reception in July and they had a DJ followed by a live band. The New Orleans Brass Band! They turned it out, which is not an expression I use regularly. But they were awesome and interactive with the guests. Especially when they played the Second Line. I've also been to many wedding receptions where there was a DJ. While I enjoyed the DJ, too; I must say that I'd rather a live band. Any live New Orleans band will do. But I also really enjoy a great jazz band.

I used to be a wedding photographer. The photographer works the wedding alll day. It is demanding work getting partiers/drunks in line to get certain pictures done. You gotta eat to keep working start to finish and be nice to your client and their friends and family.

I think it depends on the vibe you want and type of music you want for your wedding. The quality of the musicians it's gonna be on you in the end cause you make the choice. Also. I'm latina and live in a latinamerican country, here bands are the most common at weddings cause of the type of music played at them, salsa, reguetón, cumbia, etc, it's a huge playlist and they do it all. And just as any Dj depending on the service you purchase they come with party favors, lights, smoke machines, you name it, and when it's time for the band to take a break they'll put on a playlist of whatever you want... so... might not be a dj but still ample music to chose from. So here, bands are the most popular for weddings and other types of events like birthdays, quinceañeras, etc

That is true I agree with Dulcé there. Just because you agreed to play a song doesn't mean we can play it well. I've heard stories of something like that happening and it was one of the more embarrassing moments in the marriage ceremony for some people so yeah it does matter.

What do you guys think about the album cut of a song vs. a live performance of that song? Because sometimes, I don't mind when the singer does something a little different with their song, but sometimes I feel like the album cut was gold and they do NOT need to reinvent the wheel, and hearing it performed differently is just offputting.

Lol, Dulce has no idea how any of this works. I play in a cover band that also does weddings. We know about 11 hours worth of songs, not 30 songs. We let the couple (who always come to see us, or check out videos) pick their favorites. And we also bring a DJ to play anything we don’t do. Sounds to me like you’re just not a fan of bad entertainment, and I get that. 😀 But who’d rather vibe out to a guy with a laptop over a bunch of guys putting on a show?

I will die on the DJ podium all day everyday!! The only time I'd choose a band is if it's someone popular, like One Republic or Maroon 5. Bands are not for a successful reception; maybe only use for a cocktail hour. DJs can play anything. During a cocktail hour or dinner, they can put on soft muzak. But once the food is gone and the old people have left, DJs can play the music to start and maintain the party. With a band they're going to feel the need to talk between songs where a DJ just plays the music and only really talks if it's to make announcements. Thanks for all the Grinding! 🤪😂😂😂

Dulce doesn't know anything about bands who do weddings. Or that local house bands regularly fill out 3 hour sets and can know hundreds of songs. Or that there are available local wedding bands who are former Grammy winners. Or that you can request the band learn specific songs beforehand.

Definitely bands. The sound is just better IMO. Also there is always a risk that a dj is going to play the cha cha slide or some other atrocity. Whereas you can get a band custom to the genre you like best.

I have never been to a wedding with a band. I also only know one DJ he does all the family events...my cousin. He plays everything because the family is huge and multigenerational....i do not know how the older generations tolerate the younger generations music but they do and they do not complain.

I looooooovvvvvveeeee live musicians. A lot of times, the cover band is fire. But a fierce deejay CAN set the party off. Everybody has to start somewhere. Local bands often open for huge acts, and wedding bands need to be able to do too forty, at least.

Now this is an interesting debate. Wedding DJs or wedding bands. I mean I've only been to like two of my cousins weddings and I think in both cases they had a DJ so I would say the DJ would be better but I think both would still bring the excitement to a reception

The black wedding I went to had a band. They were fantastic the crowd couldn't sit down. They had a huge repertoire of music and when they took a break their was a dj. But the band was hot. Your next set could be grill cheese what is the best cheese. I like pepper jack. Some folks like plain old cheese like mom used to make. Have you had a roommate you can't stand who makes your nerves scream.

I see what she saying so the local bands that they hire at a wedding reception they might not have a very big repertoire in all cases as opposed to a very famous band. Whereas a DJ whether they're known or not they have a very big catalogue of songs they can choose from to play at said wedding reception. She's got a point
