We have made this series to share some of the details behind our conversions which will hopefully be useful for self builders. Each week we will post a video of the progress of our current build including the methods, appliances used and the order we are doing things.
We do have a team of 4 so you could expect everything to take a little longer if you are working alone!
This conversion is of a Citroen Relay L3H2 and it will be transformed into our Milo dinette model layout.
This video of week 2 goes through the wall battening, more utilities, wall and ceiling insulation and lining.
TIMESTAMPS
0:00 Intro
0:32 Battening
1:41 1st Fix utilities continues - electrics
8:17 Wall insulation
9:31 Wall panelling
11:04 Ceiling
13:47 Door cads
14:39 Trim pieces - coving and bulkhead
If you want to follow the progress live, follow our Instagram stories here / vanlifeconv. .
See more information about the spec of this model www.vanlifeconversions.co.uk/...
Do let us know if there are any areas you particularly want us to focus on filming in the comments below.
This video is not intended as advice or recommendations. Please seek professional opinion for any aspects of your conversion you are not comfortable with.

I feel so much better knowing you also use roof battens. Made sense to me too and painted matt black it doesn't look too different to planed timber. Another great insight into what you do.

@@vanlifeconversions quick follow up question Oli! 😂 where you’ve packed out the pillar with some plywood structure (by the sliding door), did you have to add a bit of structural plywood to the rest of the framework on that side so that the final 9mm ply lining sits flush?? I’m just tackling this bit on my build and I’m thinking this is the what I’ll do, but curious how you tackled it!

Brilliant techniques, lovely to see a company insulate their vehicles properly! Quite a few vans i see converted by professionals appear to be summer vans only

We weren't sure if screw caps would stay on so we ended up painting our screw heads a couple times and it's not perfect but really only noticeable if you're looking for them.

Your videos should come with a warning to have a pen and paper ready to write down all those juicy top tips! Going to have to watch all of these again later when I get to these stages.

Hi, I think you conversion are brilliant, I really luv the plywood cladding effect and also the boxing in of areas where people normally just carpet. I am starting my conversion to live in my citroen l3h2 and if you have any online templates with measurements I could use as guides to help I would be so grateful 🙏

We use the closed cell foam first which is sticky back, for the PIR boards we use aluminium tape to secure in place

Do you attach a thin batten to the ceiling at the back of the van, as there's no rib to attach the rear edge of the ceiling ply sheet to? I've seen some self-builds force a piece of batten into a curve against the brake light horizontal pillar and hold with self-tapping screws but it seems a bit dodgy. Appreciate the replies to our previous questions too thanks, we want to do it right first time.
@vanlifeconversions
@vanlifeconversions 9 месяцев назад
Yes we do, ensure it is glued and screwed into the horizontal pillar. We like to use stixall as it is very strong adhesive

Such helpful vids! Do you use different thickness PIR boards for the floor compared to the walls? I'm unsure the best thickness of battening and PIR for the floor. I see you also used to use two layers of board PIR of different thicknesses in older builds (25mm in the recesses then 50mm on top was it?) - did the closed foam insulation roll replace that 25mm PIR board layer in recent times? I want to avoid over spending lol.
@vanlifeconversions
@vanlifeconversions 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for your message it is really appreciated. For the floor we use roof battens alongside 25mm PIR insulation boards. For the walls we use closed cell foam stuck to the metal of the van. Then we use 50mm PIR Board in the shaped voids (except where the bed recesses we use 25mm). And for the final layer of insulation we friction fit 25mm PIR board. I hope this helps
@Dovoro82
@Dovoro82 11 месяцев назад
@@vanlifeconversions great thanks so much for replying - are those 25 x38mm battens?
@vanlifeconversions
@vanlifeconversions 11 месяцев назад
@@Dovoro82 we get 25mm x 50mm, but 38mm will also work great. It’s the 25mm dimension that is most important as this is the same as the insulation board. It therefore sits flush with it
