“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,” says the Declaration of Independence. But is it really self-evident? What is the basis of equality? How have we come to think the way we do about the world?
Glen Scrivener and Andrew Wilson discuss the making of the Western Mind and discuss how we became WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) as they trace the history of the West up to 1776. They make the case that far from being neutral, or self-evident, the values which many hold dear in the West today can be traced back through figures like Luther, Augustine, Paul, and ultimately to Jesus.
They show that in spite of its secular pretensions the West remains a place thoroughly shaped and marked by a Christian worldview. So are we really post-Christian? Or is Christianity the only framework that can really make sense of the things we value most?

Well done, gentlemen! It opened my eyes to another way to evangelize. I am reading a book by David Wells on the impact of the Bible on America. I can see some connections between the popularizing of the individual reading of the Bible and America as it currently is. I recommend it to anyone. It's called America's Book.

I enjoyed the podcast with you and Glen Scrivener on TGC enormously. Thank you! Also, I would encourage you to read Alejandro Chafuen’s book Faith and Liberty, or mine, God is a Capitalist: Markets from Moses to Marx. I summarize Dr. Chafuen’s research and that of many other scholars. Essentially, we show that the principles of capitalism came from theologians at the University of Salamanca during the Reformation who distilled them from natural law with Biblical support. Also, WEIRD overstates what changes in marriages laws can accomplish. Economics knows of just two ways for countries to grow their living standards: 1) plundering another country or 2) increasing productivity. A change in marriage would accomplish neither. Keep up the good work!

Because you're a Hyper-literalist! Stop thinking like the literal materialist world, that we are called to forsake-- and recognize *spiritually* that Jesus is *supernaturally* both the son of Man, the Son of God, and God the Trinity. Again, the term not "literally" in the Bible, but scriptural Truth taught! Is, in your view: Jesus = God Incarnate?? Yes, therefore he is God in the flesh-- Still GOD!! 😮
