'East and West' (2009) disc 2: 'Westerners want see, Easterners want to be' presented by EBS and Korea Educational Broadcast System. "Through careful studies conducted in the U.S., U.K. and East Asia, researchers came to the surprising conclusion that in many aspects, people from the 'East' and people from the 'West' think in diametrically opposite ways. Scientists determined that cultural differences trump theories that the brain's thought processes operate in much the same manner for all people. As cultures and economies become more interwoven, it is increasingly important to understand these differences and how they might affect communication and negotiations in both social and business settings."
Hello! May I know where did you get this documentary from? I want to display it in public for a community activity but I need permission to show it. So please let me know if you can help me. Thank you!!
Very nice and informative documentary, though, I could not fully relate to either cultures. As a middle eastern, I think we are neglected from the globe. Also, there are a lot of differences and mixed cultures around the world (such as middle eastern, Latinos, Africans, etc.....) so it is not very accurate to say the West and then focus on Americans and Europeans, for example, because there are other different cultures who are in the western part of the world, and same for the eastern part.
I agree with you. This documentary was really fascinating, but it's presenting information as if there are only two cultural perspectives that exist. Although it's awesome and teaches a lot of cool stuff, it was definitely made with a Western bias. As a "white" American, descended from German and Anglo-Saxon immigrants, I am not even completely in touch with my ancestral culture. A ton of Western European immigrants to the US intermarried in the 1700 and 1800's, causing the distinct national cultures of the English, German, French immigrants, etc. to be erased. I know that my German ancestors tried to assimilate quickly in the late 1800s. They quit speaking German and Anglicized their last name to become "American". This shows how even within Western European cultures, the culture morphs all the time. And like you said, there are a lot of mixed cultures around the world, because of colonialism, wars, and immigration. Think about all the misunderstanding we have about unfamiliar cultures, and all the prejudice people have against others. It would be awesome if someone made more films like this to give us a broader perspective on the diversity of thought that is present in the world. Not only is it super fun to learn about, but it would help us be more sensitive to others and learn how to communicate better.
are we sure that we are not confusing western with modern-capitalistic society? I think that the western societies many centuries ago (middle-age) were much more collectivistic
VeroMithril paper? Stairs? Printing machine? Compass? Gunpowder? Silk? Porcelaine? First alcoholic drinks? Ketchup? Cart? Paper money? Playing cards? All that invented my the west?

Both East and West created basic technologies, but the West pushed these technologies above. We took the chinese's hand cannons which could reach 20m of distance, and transformed them into naval cannons that could reach 2000m of distance in the 17th century. We took our own technology: motors , and then elevated this technology into the sky with planes going 5 times the speed of sound. Giving all credits for the modern Western technologies(Such as machine guns) to the East for inventing lower tier technologies (Such as gun powder) is just stupid. Over 90% of scientific achievements have been done in the West by westerners - source: Human Accomplishment: The Pursuit of Excellence in the Arts and Sciences, 800 B.C. to 1950. The Nazi Germany advanced their technologies faster than China did in 1000 years. if you look at the East right now, all you can see is Western technologies produced by Easterners.
