West Indies great Carl Hooper reminisces about the golden years when they dominated world cricket.
We also spoke about the rivalry they had with the Aussies, what it was like to play with the likes of Curtly Ambrose and Brian Lara and his own cricket journey.

When I saw him in 1988 against England, I thought he was the classiest batsman I’d seen. He was magnificent. Bad decisions seemed to let him down, but on his day he was high, high class with gorgeous technique. Tom Graveney was almost having a toss on camera when commentating, he was that impressive!

From India, we love Carl Hooper, the greatest West Indian all rounder. His style of batting, fielding and bowling have been fantastic. Sad that Hooper bid farewell to West Indian cricket prematurely. However, happy to see that he is really active as a great cricket coach in Australia. May Jesus Christ bless Carl Hooper and his family.

Carl was on par with Lara, Sachin, Mark waugh in terms of talent. unfortunate that both carl and mark could only do little justice to their god given talent. No bowler got carl out. he got himself out 8 out of 10 times. On the days he decided not to get himself out, it was treat to the eyes. What a talent!

Faruk Khan I don't know where you got that of concept from about Carl Hooper, was never into Tendulkar,Lara,or Mark Waugh class,I guessed into your mind. But not in real life, those 3 batsmen you are talking about. They are way above Carl Hooper,go and looked again. I remembered when Tendulkar started in 1989,Lara in 1990 ,I don't remembered the years Carl Hooper or Mark Waugh playing test cricket ok.

Carl. You have no greater fan than myself. I’ve been bashed many times by my friends for your average, but I still don’t regret it. Seeing you with that bat gave me a big adrenaline rush. This a great interview which explains a lot of your struggles. It’s real tough going into something that your parents don’t support. Thankfully to you, the Hooper family is known globally.

This interview as the conversation goes on it's deepened with humility , sincerity and a revelation centered as to why the West Indies is lacking in reminiscent dominance occurring decades ago. The general reflected the phases that were implemented by the regions to include the embryonic, junior and senior level that were predominantly engaged so as to fully develop our potential cricketers. AII those areas mentioned within the initial narrative have been discarded or compromised . So no matter how much talent we have and those areas have not been activated..Our hope will at a dismal horizon. I wish the administrative committee take note while listening attentively to the humble general. Hats off to you Carl Hooper.

Carl Hooper was known as Sir Carl here in Barbados and for good reason. He used to score loads of runs at the Kensington Oval during his first class career. Elegance personified. Overall, despite underachieving on his huge talents, his all-around stats with both bat and ball were still quite solid in International cricket.

Wonderful interview and a great insight in to why the West Indies team were at the top in the 80s and 90s. He was a batting Masterclass himself and elegant stroke maker. A cricket legend from a great side and great era. Some honest answers and so humble in this interview. Top Sportsman. Thank you for the memories Carl. Test Match and One Day Allrounder. As Geoff Boycott used to say in commentary, his favourite lollypop bowler. Players could not take him so lighty as he will get you out when you least expect it. His contribution with that bat made the middle order strong even in the later years with Lara and Chanderpaul. Once all these players had retired, The Test side and the One day sides of the West Indies have declined, with only success in T20. Although The West Indies team are still up there as winning 5 ICC Tournements. There is a long way to go before they can be at the top again. As Carl said, Got to see it from the early level. The System has to be there in place to create new legends in Test/One Day/T20.

Ken Williams reading your comment about some of the biggest problems, which is affecting the WI cricket. What you are saying and talking about Grayson Shillingford , from the island. I know when those little young guy came around and, never lossed long as a snowball. Because what you are talking about coaches and families problems,it is all nonesense. I am watching the WI cricket say about 60 years as a big boy and, the main problem with the WI team over the years is.Poor selection is the major problem, which is affecting the entire cricket. This kind of hypocrisy is going on a very, very long time,I can remember. When Sobers was the captain of the WI team,it was more than 98 % to 95% of Barbados players in the team and. If anyone doubt what am saying, they can looked up for the teams which played under his captaincy. During those years if anyone does not believe what am saying, because the records cannot tell lies and. It is the same thing up to now and, there are so many hypocrites in the region. Refused to come out and say it, that enough is enough now. The recently test team that went to Australia,it is a Barbarian team, than a WI team. There are 7 players from Barbados is in the team and, leaving out some of the better players who would able to put up a better fight. But as I said before, that there are too many hypocrites in the Caribbean countries them. All those cyber bullies them is trying to do, that when I wrote my comment stating the major problems. Which is affecting the entire WI cricket, then you have these semi lunatics is trying to argue with me and. Left the major problems to addressed, because they does not have any knowledge about the history of the WI cricket. Ken Williams why you don't try to encourage that all the islands, just go their separates ways. Because there is no unity amongst themselves, and they are not making any progress at all. Do you see all the rest of sports, every country is going on their own.So why are you trying to associated with your neighbors them and, they does not liked you at all. We played a regional cricket competition and, every country produces their team of players. It is a competition and the 🏆 trophy goes to the winner, so everybody play for themselves. Can you realized that the countries in the region, that there are no unity amongst themselves. When we are going to the Olympics or the world championship games,it does not matter how small the country is. They are sending their own team there, win or lose,it does not matter at all. The most important thing is to compete on the international scene, so it should be the same way with the cricket. I know that cannot please everyone, but it is tuff luck to who don't like what am saying. It really up to them,I am speaking the truth about the whole scenario. So as I said before, that you cannot please everyone, so it is up to individual. How he or she seeing my comment, because some people is easily getting very emotional about everything,ok.

Listening to what Carl Hooper is saying, some of the things I don't agreed with, and some I agreed with. I remembered when he started to played as a young guy, so all what he is saying,I already knew about it.The year he was born in 1966 ,I was already playing schoolboy cricket. During my time growing up,my parents was telling me. That cricket cannot eat and it, won't put me anywhere in life. That was the concepts of most black people, because they does not know. The benefits that you can achieved out of sports, once you can keep up with it. Black people strongly believed that having 10 degrees with no money you are better off in life, than don't have a good education. Just to say that his or her son's and daughters,is in some form of professions. With no money to their names, when the white people children them is. Making millions of dollars from sports, black people take too long to realized that. Sports is the biggest game of making money,I have worked 48 years of my life and. Now retired from all these years and, the money that I am getting from my pension. I haveto being doing apart time job to makes ends meet, because things is very expensive now. Becaused I give up my aims in sports, because of what my parents was telling me in those backwards days. One should realized in life, that everyone has their own calling,or gift. I know Patrick Patterson very well,I know him from schoolboy, playing in the school cricket league in Jamaica. He was sabotage by one of the former WI captain, and he stop playing test cricket before time.Carl Hooper didn't want to say, that Patrick Patterson was the fastest WI bowler he ever saw. Patrick Patterson was quicker than all of the other fast bowlers,I have seeing a lot of them. From Wes Hall and Charlie Griffith's, from in the 1960s all the way up until now.Hooper should admitted to the public during his interviews, that it is in his time. That the WI cricket has fallen into totally disarray,or choas,in 1995. When Australia beaten them at Sabina Park Kingston Jamaica,to take the world crown. So they are the ones should be blamed, for the collapsing of the WI cricket from 1995 and. They didn't do nothing at all to fixed it,the bunch of players who played in that test series. After they was defeated by Australia to take the world crown, they never get up and fight. To restored what they got from the former players them, they just gave up and walked away leaving the game.Into total choas and, now they are trying to blamed other players for their downfall. I know that they have some cyber bullies out there, so they can say all they.Want about my comment, because I am speaking the truth from what I know ok .

@@MegaKaywill I kind of know who am talking to, the WI cricket came tumbling down. When Richie Richardson became captain, when he started to bring in mostly his islands players. From the former combined islands them, since you want me to tell you straight up. I am way older than you, so you does not know the intricacies of the WI cricket. So it is really hard to deal with people like you so,who is talking from personal emotions that facts. Becaused I know when Viv Richards, Andy Roberts,is playing for the combined islands in 1971. Becaused I know that you are from one of those small islands, so you are not going hear any better from you at all. What you are talking about coaching, equipments, and the preparing of the pitches. I am going to tell you straight up,it is all nonesense what you are saying. From the time I was born,it is only 4 countries useto played test cricket. Jamaica, Barbados,T&T, also Guyana, the rest of countries was not a test playing countries them. But after they started to used the sponsorship money to play cricket, into some of those countries. Which does not have the kind of people to support the gates receipts , that is where the problem is. That is why the WI team is struggling with money problems, because they are using the sponsorship money to host. The cricket matches in those small islands with no population to support the gates receipts, that is what is affecting the entire games. Also when I heard man like Viv Richards, Andy Roberts, Curtly Ambrose, Kenny Benjamin, and a few more players them is. Talking their nonessentical arguments about the pitches them, is not preparing properly. It is all garbage 🗑️ they are all talking, because from they was playing in schoolboys cricket. Until they started playing for the WI team, all of those pitches was dust bowls. The only two pitches in the entire region was always pace wickets,is only Sabina Park Kingston Jamaica, also Kensington Barbados. So when those guys as former players is talking all those nonsense about the pitches, they are all crazy people them. Those former players them is only trying to manipulated the younger generation, because they don't know the intricacies about what they are saying. You can criticizing as much as you want, because I know the intricacies about the WI cricket history.
