Now this is a review, man. People who actually rode the bike full time, know everything about it. The spare key info was very important to me, and I appreciate that tip. Thanks a lot, man!
I feel like if you dont go to the limit on an r1 you dont have balls. I spent good money on my bike I'm not going to waste it. That was 5 years ago. I feel like I've almost mastered it but you never truly will master anything that beastly. Getting too confident is what gets you killed. Cheers
I agree. I bought the R1 for one purpose, speed. I definitely push the bike hard as well but what I find is it’s the roads where I live that are the limiting factor. The bike wants more but our roads are sh*t. Constantly hitting dips, pot holes, frost heaves, or gravel that make the bike unstable or loose traction. Our long winter season causes heavy damage to the roads every year. Have you ever lost traction and started to spin going over 200kms/hr? I have. Or hitting a pot hole giving you such bad speed wobble your inner thighs get bruised from slapping the tank. Definitely makes a guy error on the cautious side when on the streets anyway.
@@JT2JZ those are valid points and that sucks. That's the one draw back of living far north. Along with rust issues on vehicles. I live in a major city in the midwest with plenty of highways and bikes that run frequently. And our main police force now has a no chase policy. So I have the freedom to ride how I like. I lose traction all the time in 1st when getting on it but thankfully never lost total control because good throttle control is key for older bikes. No rider aides to save us. Also being lowered 1.5 inches makes it more stable and being a fat ass 190 pounds helps too. I've even ran over a deer or some large roadkill "it was at night" going 80 and literally ramped whatever it was but got lucky didn't wobble or lose it. Many close calls some too close. Should have scared me a little bit but that fear has long passed seeing how I haven't went down... yet and been riding it for so long i consider myself fortunate I live where I do. Cheers
I’m jealous. We only have a couple of main roads in our small town so not a lot of selection. The police force here would rather chase you down, endangering everyone else and potentially cause a major accident just to issue a minor ticket. Hopefully you have a good riding season. Stay safe out there brotha
@@JT2JZ man that blows. I would hope you have some sort of track or spot to have fun on or what's the point imo. And yes the police shouldn't chase bikes and endanger public for what?! Ego? A 200$ speeding ticket? Stupid no matter how you put it. And yes you as well. These bikes and the 5 valve genesis motor are gems and I will keep it for the rest of my life. 37k miles (59k km) and no valve adjustment needed at 28k interval. Ride safe but have fun when you can amigo. Lifes too short not to. Like I told my folks when I got the thing. I'm not afraid of dying I'm afraid of not living. Cheers
Ya it doesn’t take much to change the power to weight ratio on such a small bike. You probably wouldn’t notice as much on a heavier cruiser style bike or Harley with more low end torque.
@@JT2JZ that's true, I've never heard anyone say it but that's exactly what it feels like, I like your video and nice collection dude, that's quite a line up.
This has been such an important video for me. I have been riding a 250cc for almost 2 years now and am ready to upgrade. These are two of my favorite options so this is a useful comparison. Thanks for the video.
I'm siding with Bruce on this one. Snag up a 600. The jump you will have from a 600 to a 1000 is about the same as a 250 to 600. My R6 was awesome, but it does get a little old because it was to easy to ride. Meaning, it was no work to go fast and hold corners. Youll have way more power in the road than you'll need. You'll hang with any sports car out there.
I agree as well. If you were happy riding the 250 for two years a 600 will be a lot of bike from what you are used to! Better to error on the safe side my friend.
I just got a 2004 R1 yesterday. Picked her up & rode her back home, 2 hour ride and loved it so much. First time riding a 1000cc bike. I’ve owned 250cc & 2x 600cc. I’ll never go back. 1000cc all the way baby!! Great video brother, greetings from Australia. Ride safe.
Hope sh'e's serving you well. Took me down memory lane... first bike we ever bought was a 04 R1 from a cop in Miami. This was back in 2009. I would buy that bike again. Crazy how fast time went by.
I have an 02 R1 with a D&D slip on exhaust, power Comander, slipper clutch, lowering kit, I bought it 2nd hand so I don't remember all the specific upgrades but it is insanely fast. My buddy has an 03 R6 same type of upgrades we've swapped bikes on rides and in city riding the R6 is better to ride because the R1 just wants to go. In first gear with no throttle the R1 idles at about 25mph the R6 dosen't really have any power till you get past 4000rpms. On the highway the R1 is king it has insane tourqe and speed at low RPMS you don't have to hammer on the R1 the power is there through out the rpm range. Handling I haven't noticed that big of a difference in handling maybe because my suspension isn't stock. The only problem I had with my R1 is cross winds on the highway I was getting blown all over the road, but the rear tire was at 25psi I put at 35psi no more floating in the crosswinds. My only complaint with both the R6 and R1 is they are not comfortable on long rides. My Ninja 500r way more comfortable on long rides and my ZX6R (636) is extremely comfortable and I think it's faster then the R6. The R1 has low beams on both sides and highbeams on both sides. As far as ignition replacement you can get an ignition, Gas tank lock and seat lock on Ebay for under $60 for the R6 or the R1. My R1 came with a plain steel key. I bought a 3pack of blank yamaha keys red, blue, and black on Amazon for like $20 and had HomeDepot cut me a spare.
R1 just dominates all bikes. No argument. I’ve owned both and I love both. But the r1 is just not compatible to anything on this planet! Also, 600s are sought after especially the r6 because they stopped making it. Producing the pile of shite R7 now 🤮
@@JT2JZ yes I deed, I got over 2500 bucks on aftermarket accessories, the bike likes the attention it gets. Next is going to be a 300 Fat tire Kit with Hellian Chrome wheels 👌
And 1500 dollars is exactly why dealerships wont cut a key. Thats why as soon as u buy a bike. U cut the dealership out of it. I have never taken one of my brandnew bike in for “first service” Total joke folks. I am a Motorcycle Mechanic by trade. And they will rip u off at every opportunity they get. Words of advice. If u dont like spending shit tons of money on pointless shit. Then when u buy a bike. Know how to do everything to it yourself. Motorcycle ownership can be so cheap if u just know your shit. And this is not directed at creator of video. This statement is for everyone and anyone out there
Yes this is the sad truth these days. The more familiar you are with your own bike and the more work / maintenance you can do to it at home the better!
Great job explaining these bikes in a real world comparison. It's awesome to hear that from people who actually spend time riding the bikes. Ride safe!!
Hey Matt, I suggest the r7 as a step to either. Sounds weird going for a 700cc over a 600cc but it's a much more relaxed ride however if you are experienced and capable enough then the r6 is an amazing and fun ride. Ride safe bud
Agreed man. My first bike was a litre bike ( 2004 cbr1000rr ). For my own personal bike I would never own anything smaller. I’m a power junky at the end of the day 🤘. Glad to hear other companies are starting to clone keys. Now If only the dealerships would get on board!
Hi Jt2jz, u made such a simple n informative video, I think u should create a separate channel for Motorbike content. Such on point info, which is hard to find. loved it. U will have great success.......... If u keep it up.
Thanks for the kind words and support. When summer comes I will definitely be making more bike / riding videos. Maybe some stunting / tips and tricks along the way. I’m relatively new to RU-vid still but learning as I go. More bike content is a guarantee though. These videos are getting the most viewers.
You can’t compare an 09 r6 to an 06 r1.... the 06 r1 looks way better then the 06 r6 and 09 r1 looks way way better then the 09 r6. Especially with the cross plain.
I have to show appreciation for mentioning your thoughts on people who are experienced riding dirt bikes, moving onto a liter bike. This is one of the only videos I've watched that discusses that perspective, and it helps me personally as well.
Honestly I think dirt biking is some of the best rider experience to have. Always riding on different loose surfaces and navigating over obstacles you really learn how a bike handles a lot quicker than on the street!
Hello, I’m a new rider, my dad recently passed away and he left his r1 but I’ve never rode a motorcycle before and I’m pretty scared to even touch the bike, is there any tips you could give to me as a new rider or advice when learning
Sorry to hear about the bad news. As long as you have respect for the bike and start off slow to get the feel for the bike you should be ok. My first bike was a 2004 cbr1000rr. It took me almost a full season of just casually riding before I was 100% comfortable on it. If you ride with other people make sure they don’t push you out of your comfort zone. Some people can push you past your skill level and that’s when an accident will usually happen for a new rider. At the end of the day make sure you enjoy the ride and have fun 🤘
Hey I wanted to ask a question. I am getting the same Yoshimura exhaust for my R6, and I have aftermarket headers too. Do I need a link pipe to join the slip on and headers?
On my bike the stock header and cated mid pipe were one piece. I had to cut the cat off the stock header and clamp on the new mid pipe when I did a cat delete. I guess it would depend on the length of your aftermarket header. If it isn’t that long after the accumulator section you will likely need an added mid pipe. I’m not 100% sure because I’m still running the stock header at the moment
No I lost my keys and without a red master key the dealer can not cut any spare keys for you. Only option at the time was full ignition replacement with a new red master key
Christ around town? Buy a scooter The r6 is sh!t You have to dance on the gearbox to have power, nothing below 10 thou rpm, pure track bike All blow and no go Absolutely useless on the road , not street, road, theres more torque on an electric toothbrush! R1 is far superior
OK, I'll let you in on a secret. The reason the R6 is more expensive at times than the R1 is because the R6 has been discontinued. You failed to mention that in among other things.
This was really helpful. After seeing this is think im gonna try for something like gsxr750, a nice middle road. My biggest problem rn though is that as you said, litre bikes are somehow cheaper.
The market pricing is odd for sure. I think the 600s are just more popular for most people and that drives used prices up. A gsxr750 is a solid option for sure. I’ve rode them before and they are pretty much exactly what you would expect. You can usually find them relatively cheap as well so win / win.
I have the same generation R1 04/06 and a 16 R6 and with proper setup this gen R1 can turn in like no other to the point my R1 out turns my R6 but I have yet to set up the R6 and am fairly certain this will change. That said a well set up R1 with Bridgestones latest DOT race rubber is unbelievable!!!! Something about the Bridgestone front it turns in like no other.
In my opinion the 600cc may feel underpowered for you. As long as you have some bike experience I would recommend stepping up to maybe a gsxr750 or R1.
@@JT2JZ I completely understand, and I know you’re right. Against any better judgment though, I think I’m still going to get an R6, give it a try and feel the power it has. Hoping it isn’t as bad as I think, lol. If so, it’ll go out to someone else. Thank you for taking time to reply to my question, subscribed!
Thanks for the support. I’m sure you will still have a great time riding an R6. On the plus side the R6 is the most popular size and has the best resale value so it should be easy to resell if it comes to that.
600 is great if you get it new. second hand you are buying a bike that has been thrashed by some other hoon and maybe asking for trouble. I love both bikes and that is why I have an FZ1 gen 2. No bow leggedness on the fizzy. Nothing but comfort and wanting to ride all day long.
Yes unfortunately most crotch rockets are cheap enough that younger guys buy and use them for racing / stunting. As the years go by it does get harder to find used bikes in good shape. I love the FZ1 for how practical and comfortable they are! I am a little disappointed with the power output though. They detune the fz1 so much that my r6 is very similar power wise. If they had the same engine tune from a traditional R1 it would be the perfect bike!
I also heard that Yamaha is discontinuing the r6. They are not updating it to keep up with stricter emission regulations. They are only going to be selling it as a track use ( non street legal ) version now. I was pretty disappointed when I heard this!
Buy an R6. You'll never get to use all those power in the R1 most of the time. If your country is traffic free playground, then R1 is maybe what you should buy. R6 is more than fast enough for the road and is more fun in the twisties.
For a daily driver I actually enjoy the r1 more. It has way more usable torque in the low rpm range where you spend most of your time casually cruising around. For example hit a yellow light, no need to down shift. Just roll into throttle no matter what gear you are in. Very street friendly for me.
@@JT2JZ true. R6 is for trigger happy type of a person I guess (like me unfortunately). Changing gear is too addicting for me. I definitely don't deserve the R1 because of that lol.
I wish I saw this sooner. Owned a 6 for years and thinking of upgrading. Slated to buy a 1 used in ~2 weeks. This was very helpful, thank you!! Mind if I PM you next week with any last minute questions I may have?
@@JT2JZ So I didn't realize YT didn't offer any sort of DM functionality...figured it would. Is there another platform we can leverage to toss ideas around?
Bro I just come across your video like right now for the first time and I will tell you right now if you were to ask me that face-to-face especially with the two that I'm looking at right now do you have floored me right now just what the two you got on my God so sick bro so sick
Okay now that we got the introduction out of the way brother off I'll give you my opinion honestly right now after hopefully next year I'll buy my house I'm actually looking into getting the R6 Raven I don't know something about that black and gold Manatee it really just it attracts me and please please please understand I'm not taking away from that are one but just something about that black and gold Raven the first time I ever seen it and just the colors just distracting me you know but also do like that R1 Raven that's completely blacked out as well so but honestly yeah I think I'm going to go R6 myself cuz I know the other ones bigger Blake you know performance blah blah blah blah blah but still for me yeah I think I would go R6 but in your case brother I just I'm sorry I couldn't I couldn't decide one way or the other
Great review I liked it. The only thing I dident like was comparing looks and such, I get comparing mechanical things and such to and extent. But if I was to compare and 1990’s bike to a newer 2020+ version… then… yea you get the point. I know their only 3 years apart BUT they did change the looks in between z just sayn!! Still really enjoyed the video thanks!!!
Any differences in terms of passenger comfort? I know we're talking about sport bikes, but my gf rides a lot with me so I'm hesitating between the two, R6 vs R1 Crossplane. Thanks and great vids btw!
Seat comfort for the passenger is very similar between the two bikes. As the driver I enjoy doubling on the r1 more. The seat height is lower and longer wheel base makes it feel more stable with two people. The low end torque is also nice for the extra body weight
What kit did you get to lower your R1? I should look into that for my GF and her R6. She is only 5’4. More videos on the way! Thanks for the support man.
Dude..... 2009 R6 seat height is 1.5cm taller. Not waaaaaaay taller. Get ur suspension set up properly. You probably have a 180/55 rear tire on the R6 and a 190/50 on the R1. If ur girlfriend can barely touch the ground on the R6....then fix it for her.... 2006 R1 wheelbase is 3.5cm longer. The R6 is actually 5lbs heavier dry weight. There is not much difference in the dimensions. These bikes are built to race. Not for joy riding around town. You dont buy a race horse to take on trail rides. You dont buy a McLaren Spider to joy ride around town on Sunday. You buy them to take to a race track and race. Go as fast as you can full throttle. It drives me crazy when I hear people say they buy these bikes and just ride them as they got it. Then make comments or worse, comparisons. The biggest difference in these two bikes is horse power. R6 factory spec is 135 hp. R1 is 180 hp. If you want to joy ride around town, buy a frigin Vespa.
I was comparing the seat width not height. R6 seat is way wider making it FEEL taller than it actually is. You are correct when it comes to weight. These bikes are surprisingly very similar on the scale. As far as using these bikes to cruise on the street I’m not lucky enough to have any race tracks in my area so the street is all we have. We enjoy spirited riding on the street every time we get on these bikes and that will never change.
I drive the Fazer 1000 (2002) first edition an Amazing very comfortable, very fast bike.0-100km/t 3.5 sek. Max.Enoughf for me 66year old Guy. Thank you for one of the Best video i have seen. Drive carefully, you got only 1 life❤👋 Frank Larsen Denmark
Obviously the supra would not compete with any bike in stock form. Not many other cars would either. Bikes will always be the most cost affective way to get something affordable and fast.
Two very different toys. They both satisfy that craving for more power, more speed in very different ways. Four wheels move the body but two wheels move the soul!
Similar in some ways but both of these bikes would likely feel underpowered in comparison. I would absolutely love to try a two stroke street bike though! Has always been a dream of mine
Ty. Already lived my life on bikes. Planning to selll my yzf r125 this summer. First I had TZR and then R125. Great bikes. R125 isn't slow. @@joshdean5867
Hey I got a questioon for yah! So I’m a 5’7 male and was wondering if I would be able to flat foot either of these bikes? Or if I would even be able to touch the ground lol. Sorry if this is a dumb question
@@JT2JZ hell if you have to tip toe the dirt bike ima have to hop off and and stand next to it 😂 might as well have a picnic with it while I’m holdin it
Much more power in the R1, the R6 screams more and you have to use the gears more, gets tiring after a while and you have to have more rpms to get the power. I have 2 R1s and 2 Honda Vfr 750/800 and prefer the riding style of the VFRs and better for cruising, but the power in the R1s are great.
Now that I watched further, the remark about not thinking about what you're needing to do on either bike is bad. both will kill you in a heartbeat. And i will stand by my other comment, if you weigh 160 on an r6 vs 160 on an R1 they are 2 totally different machines but a 225lb guy on an R6 will find it a slug in comparison to an R1
Most things in life can kill you if your not careful. If a rider doesn’t have respect for the road and the machine he’s using he shouldn’t be on the road at all. It wouldn’t matter if you were riding an R3, if you don’t respect it your still going to get in trouble very quickly!
It’s in the works! I’m trying to find a ( 2009-2014) crossplane R1 to replace my current 06 R1. Very hard to find though. Not a lot of selection especially in the off season. Hopefully for next season I can get my hands on one!
The R1 is literally a street legal MotoGP bike when you get them unrestricted. The R6 is the chilled out little brother that gets fist bumped by its older brothers friends lol
I came here in ny bought a 2020 mt09 bnew after 1 yr and 3 mnths it got stolen on june 1st 2022. So now im browsing and made a deal of a 2004 r1 cherry with a very good deal.
Both bikes are amazing and definitely have unique characteristics to offer. I always enjoy the ride no matter what bike I’m on. The older I get the more bikes I want because I appreciate them all! It’s very inconvenient some days 😆
When you were talking about the r6 you said "almost perfect sound" I'm looking super intensly for the perfect deep sound with the just perfect tune, any recommendations?
For a good sounding r6 the mid pipe / cat delete is a must. I did the M4 mid pipe but other brands would be very similar. As far as the rear slip ons go they all have slightly different exhaust notes. My favourite sounding slip ons would be the M4, yoshimura, or two brothers. A bigger front header pipe to give your bike a true full exhaust would give the deepest sound possible. Only down side is headers are pretty expensive!
@@JT2JZ Superbike racer has a full akroprvic exhaust on his colorful r6 and honestly it sounds so amazing like when he let's go of the throttle and then gives it gas you have the rumble and gives me such satisfaction but it's not deep like one if the comments even said it sounds like a house fly, I'm on a hunt to find "the motorcycle sound" the same sound I remember as a kid, the same sound I hear when bikes are flying by a few blocks away from me, I'm still looking but you definitely helped, thankyou. I also don't know why i never thought to cat delete my bike it never even came to me but would forsure make it sound better
Akrapovic is a great brand as well. Honestly most of todays modern exhaust systems perform great. It just comes down to personal preference with small sound differences. In your case if you already have a slip on I would say start with the mid pipe and you might be surprised at how big of a difference just that will make. My only other advice would be don’t use a straight pipe style rear slip on. They sound really raspy and you end up loosing power. As long as you have some kind of small slip on muffler you should be good to go after the mid pipe install 🤘
