What’s Inside This Giant Inkjet Printer.
I tear into a giant printer and show what I find. There’s a lot of good parts for projects inside! I love taking apart old mechanical things. You can almost always learn something new from the experience.

I think it was well worth your time I admire people who look at things differently and salvage parts etc. then use them down the road well done

Thanks. Yeah, I really try to reuse and recycle if I can.

Thanks for this. I too took one of these big bad boys apart some time ago. If you don't get ink on yourself, your not human! My fav bits are the ground steel bars - useful. And the one I took apart even have some aluminium extrusion, track type assembly. Gonna make a something from it some day.

Yes, I've been taking copiers and xerox machines apart since I was a boy. The older copy machines had a treasure trove of parts. There were lenses, motors, gears, chains, toner hoppers, high voltage transformers, and electronics. Plus, the education you can get from disassembling stuff is different than anything else.

Nice workshop, you really know how to maximize your usable space. I thought I was the only one who scavenged parts that i have no use for at the time from discarded items.
@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 4 года назад
Yeah, when shop space is tight you gotta get creative with the organization. I think almost all makers scavenge to some degree. I can't help myself.

Didn't you save the optical (linear and rotary) encoders on the carriage-slide and the paper-feed?
@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 4 года назад
I didn't. I've never really needed them for the type of project I make. But they're definitely worth keeping if you have a use for them.

I used to run printers like this except more like 10' wide for about 11 years. One was UV cure, fun stuff, but now I decided to drive a tractor truck, way more money 😁 Edit: I had to learn to repair this on my own when a tech wasn't available, was exciting to me

They're probably stepper motors, any part numbers on them?
@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 4 года назад
I'd have to go dig it out of my motor bin. But I think at least one of them was a stepper motor.

Did you have to climb a magic beanstalk before picking up the printer?
@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 4 года назад
YES! How did you know?
@GrayHatter

Good job on rerecording the spoken audio, I think it's a 1/4 or 1/8 of a second too fast. Which I never would have noticed if you played the real audio from the shop at 1/8 (ish) volume. The lack of echo is what makes it obvious 😁 I love your videos, keep making!
@GrayHatter

Or if that's the real audio... Damn that's a VERY impressive mic, which is it?

Thanks! It should be synced pretty well because I was using a radio mic directly into the camera.

I’ve got a 36” plotter in my shed. I need to do this to it.
@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 4 года назад
Ooooo! I think plotters have a few stepper motors!
@jasonbailey9139
@jasonbailey9139 4 года назад
Yeah, I was really hoping to use it for full sized plans, but finding ink was an issue as it’s over 20 years old. I am hoping for some steppers and som metal rod. When I gave up on using it as a plotted, I set it on its side and ink leaked out from somewhere. I’m sure it’s an absolute mess inside.
@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 4 года назад
@@jasonbailey9139 It's still probably worth a try. I used to take apart copy machines when you could still find them. They've got a lot of cool parts and pieces.
