Did You Know There's a First Surface Mirror and other good project parts inside Rear Projection TV's?
This is the third video in the "Did You Know" series.
I dismantle and show what you can find and reuse from an old rear projection tv.
I've used the mirrors for making kaleidoscopes and some of the front screen elements to make lamp shades in the past.
Taking apart old appliances is a great way to get free supplies for your projects.

I gutted a Sony TV just like that a few months ago, including the same LCD projection system. You missed one of the greatest pieces of engineering, the three color recombining prism in the center of all of that. When looking into the output face of the prism, you can see three directions at once. You'll see blue from the right, green from straight ahead, and red from the left. Super cool. It's job is to recombine the three separate color channels, then pass the light through the lens and prism you already showed, which projects it onto the TV surface. There was also a crazy sharpie drawing of a duck on the inside... apparently they sometimes get bored at the factory.
@Makebuildmodify

Yeah, I found the prism after the video. Pretty cool stuff. The duck cartoon is hilarious.

This seems like a great solution for getting a first surface mirror for a projector in a small room. These TVs are easy to find cheap or even free since they are heavy and people just want to get rid of them. I was looking at new mirrors, and getting the right size new would cost up to $2000. The lens on the other hand looks like it would be fun to mess with on a camera, if I could find a way to attach it.

Justin, I have been experimenting with kaleidoscopes after seeing your video on the 3D kaleidoscope. I have had a lot of fun, Thanks! I have gotten several rear projection TVs. There is a warning on many of them that indicates that 30,000 volts on the cathode ray tube that may be stored in a capacitor. To your knowledge is there a high voltage capacitor in the Sony that you took apart?
@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 5 лет назад
I'm not sure. The Sony I took apart in the video didn't have a CRT component in it. But that doesn't mean that there aren't other dangerous parts inside. I usually have the unit unplugged for a few days. Even with that precaution I treat almost everything like it's a live circuit.
@timholiner381
@timholiner381 5 лет назад
Very interesting. I think that the "lens" on the screen has vertical lines that spread the light horizontally. I had a similar Sony and that's what mine did. I can't imagine what use a fresnel lens would be in that position since they are usually magnifiers or wide angle lenses. Anyway, the vertical line lens was designed to improve off-axis viewing.

Hey! Did you end up playing with the lens? 4:10 I have the same exact TV, working perfectly. I was wondering how would it look if you put the lens up to the camera lens mount (only the tv lens) I tried some other projector lenses, and they produce cool effects. Don't know about this one... and it would be a shame to break the TV if its working now.

Thank you for the video! I need those mirrors for my kaleidoscopes! I watched it a long time ago and only now got my fist backprojection TV. But after putting it apart I had to find out that the mirror is a simple mirror, not a first surface one :/ Do you know any way to tell upfront (given the model of the TV) if it has a first surface mirror inside or a usual one? To avoid buying/transporting wrong TVs
@Makebuildmodify

Sorry to hear that. I don't have any way to tell if the mirror is first surface from the outside of the tv.

@@Makebuildmodify I know it seemed pointless of me bringing that out, but then again you had a triple crt head set which is closer to older crt based projectors of that time. Someone with a little knack and creativity may have been able to repurpose that for part of a movie room setup and still salvage the rest when I think about it.

I'm so jealous, we don't have an electronics recycling center. We just have a scrap yard and they won't let you take shit from there. I do pick up alot of electronics off the side of the road that people have put out for garbage pick-up. I salvage capacitors, fuses, speakers, wiring connectors, etc, then I pull the copper out for my scrap yard pile.

I did my Phillip's. I will never have to buy another basic component like a inductors, capacitor, resistor, etc again. After dismantling that tv and seeing its power supply, I now know why the power bill went down. 3ft X 1ft power supply board O.o. I got same as this guy, plus a massive flyback transformer, a couple massive transformers, about ten good size transformers, just so much. It was alot easier than carrying it all to dump. A solder iron with the vacuum pump remover, and i had everything off those boards in no time. My dad claims i destroyed a $7200 tv in early 2000s time and money. Unbelievable. I dont know the brand, but my uncle has one that I swear is almost 7ft across at the base. It does 480 hdmi I believe, and works perfect today in 2021. He keeps it because it suits the man cave so well. I think it's a Toshiba, but its huge.

@Makebuildmodify
@Makebuildmodify 5 лет назад
I used "optical quality" in the title to convey the the idea of high quality. These mirrors are first surface mirrors. That means the reflective surface is on the front of the glass instead of the rear. That way the light doesn't go through the glass while reflecting. At the end of the day it just means the color and reflectivity is much better than a typical bathroom mirror.
