This is What a judo practice looks like at Kokushi Budo.
We start with line up. Try to emphasize clearing your mind and leaving your day behind. This is where you should put yourself in the learner's mindset. We start our warm up. Lots of dynamic stretching and functional movements. We want to prepare our bodies for the training ahead. We do breakfalls. Back, Side, Rolls. I try to limit instruction time to 5 minutes. I want you to drill and do the techniques. Not be able to write a dissertation about them. I try to give individual feedback as I walk around the dojo. We do some free uchikomi or "fit ins" where you can train anything you want. It's important to have some freedom to train what Inspires you. Same idea with combinations. I do 10 combinations, you do 10 combinations. Please during that time, mix in some feints, misdirections and positional things. We go into moving uchikomi. Then Nagekomi which is doing throws on a crash mat. Important because it helps you accelerate through the movement. Newaza (groundwork) instruction. Drill. We do some conditioning. Mostly burpees. Then we are ready for live sparring (randori). Conditioning, then line up with Dojo creed at the end.

I am using sealtape to protect my finger. The training was harsh and brutal. From 30 people joining only 6 remain in the first 3 month. The instructor was an army trainer. The old good times.

Never done judo (even if I live in a country (France) where it's one of the national sports) but I practice BJJ. And what I see in this video is not far from how we practice in the BJJ gym (I'm not talking about the techniques which obviously are close, because BJJ comes from judo after all, but the warmup, the drills, the applauses and handshakes (in my gym it's a mix of handshakes and hugs) at the end, etc. )

I used to go to a BJJ gym that was really small and intimate like this. Unfortunately, it was *too small* and had to close. Almost makes me well up to think about, last time I went passed the place it was a carpet shop.

Just watching this makes me excited for practice tomorrow night! I am going to throw and be thrown. And the most judo thing I saw last week was my daughter, down to the last two of thirty on the warm down kid’s game, she was the first to clap the boy who won. Mutual benefit.

I had to select judo classes as an activity in my scnool, but since I've never done it I feel so insecure and anxious. It is a beginner class, but I dislike being barefeet and I'd feel so helpless during 1vs1 despite being strong and knowing techniques. It's more a society thing.

I have done martial arts for over 25 years including Aikido, BJJ and PFS under Paul Vunak. I used to be obsessed it but I don't know what happened I just got fed up of the close contact with people who didn't keep themselves clean or their gi's clean and smelt, had poor hygiene or bad breath. I simply had enough it and haven't done any in 6 years. Don't get me wrong am not saying everyone was like it but the few just spoilt it for me. I haven't missed it at all. Recently though am thinking I'd love to try Judo. Always wanted to and wish I did it before I did Aikido, however I was a huge Seagal fan in the early 90's. I have not missed the close contact and am thinking if I do start, i will just have private classes with someone I feel comfortable with and who keeps themselves immaculate. Just can't put up with the poor hygiene and tatty gi's any longer. It depressed me.

So primarily a Tang Soo Do guy here whose particular school adds some Judo, Jitsu and Aikido - Qs: In your description is ALL of that typically put into one class? How long is a typical class? And for randori, is that just on the feet or start on the feet and then go into newaza? If so, (or maybe doesn't matter if so) when do the two people break and reset? (i.e., when we spar standup and a point is scored, we typically acknowledge and pseudo reset ourselves and continue sparring). If newaza is a part of randori and say a submission takes place, do you stand back up? Thx for the content!
@shannons1886
@shannons1886 5 лет назад
Kenny Mac at Kokushi Budo (Shintaro’s school in NYC) randori takes place at the end of class with 10-15 minutes of standing. Resetting or rotating people out after ippon, and a separate 5-10 minutes of ne waza (ground) work session, resetting after submission.
@Shigashi84
@Shigashi84 5 лет назад
Yes this was filmed during one class. Some of the B roll was from a different time. Would love to do standing to ground, but we can only do it when there is not too many people on the mat. Because having some people doing newaza while others are doing standing is quite dangerous. Thanks for the input Shannon!

I hope by the time everybody gets a vaccine, we still remember how to do martial arts. I've spoken to judo and kickboxers, etc, they are all having the same issues; unable to train safely without spreading COVID.

Great vid..... Here's my question... I live in Dallas Tx now, but will be moving back to Houston this summer 2020. I want to start Judo when I get back, what can I do strength and conditioning wise to be ready for it ?? .... I'm 47 now, semi active ( no desk job ) BUT.... my lower back and knees aren't what they used to be. So what are some exercises that will help with joint, balance, ect... that would be ideal. Right now with the Covid-19 crap going on there are NO gyms open anywhere. But I do have resistance bands of various levels and a 25 lb kettle bell. Any advice is great. thanks

Have to find the right dojo for you. Make sure your teacher isn't all about competition. That he will care for your well being and your growth so he can protect you as you excel. And most importantly, go at your own pace. Speak up when you feel like youre in danger. There are great dojos that can provide this kind of environment for you.

I started hapkido at about 45, in a dojang of the kind described in the reply you received here. I'm 53 now, not totally injury free but healthy and in a wonderful community. It is possible! And totally worth it!

My mother joined karate kyokushin at the age of 42 and judo at the age of 45 and she also goes to tournaments and she also wins sometimes. She verses usually girls that are younger like in the 20's but of the same class weight. She still practices both till now and I'm also with her in both (I joined way before her in both martial arts and was the one that encouraged her to join both. Even my brothers practice kyokushin karate and ane encouraged her). My friend, it's never late. As for the injuries, all age groups will get injured from time to time but your body will get used to it. You have to do warm ups properly, train your body, eat healthy and you'll be fine. Also, find the right dojo for you and coach.
