And LASTLY, Olajuwon didn't see his opportunity because of Jordan's break, the team came together that year. Look at the season games they played, and you see fairly even results. I'd argue that those Rockets teams would have been the hardest draw of the Bulls Finals opponents. Further, Jordan's return didn't signal the end of the Rockets' championship window. It wasn't the Bulls that beat them in 96 & 97. The closing of the Rockets championship window was the trade of Bob Horry and Sam Cassell for Chuck Barkley.
@kennethpage417
@kennethpage417 6 месяцев назад
The Rockets had a solid record on their first championship, which actually had a 15 game winning streak early in the season, plus not so many losses. Then they coast to the finals beating the Knicks, which they got very lucky getting the benefit of the calls (I’m not even a knicks fan nor even live in ny) Their 2nd championship is they wouldn’t succeed if not for the trade of Clyde Drexler, yes it was still Hakeem’s team and they went to 6th place in the west division standings, but the arrival of Drexler made the difference. The Rockets had so many good and better solid role and bench players defeating the Knicks and the Magic. Look at the other careers of the Rockets players besides Olajuwon and Drexler. Horry, Cassel, Smith, maxwell, Brown, Thorpe and among others when they went to other teams

He's repeating the NBA narrative of the time, also with Jordan back Chicago was a good team but not especially a championship favorite, especially with an aging Parish and unremarkable Perdue, they still needed Rodman to slow down guys like Hakeem and Shaq and there's not even a mention of him.

Two professional players who had no ego that’s why they co-exist. Unlike other superstar players that didn’t co-exist. Like Kobe Bryant when he became a known superstar with so much hype couldn’t exist with Shaq, when he grown to have championships his horns also grew. Shaq was the main man of the Lakers couldn’t wait to become the focal point of the Lakers, Shaq’s time will fade and he can be the top tier and Shaq will be the 2nd option. Look at Magic and Kareem no egos, the Lakers team was Kareem’s team, but when his prime deteriorated, he understood that it will be Magic’s team and not his team anymore. Same goes to the other greats, that’s why not all superteams that formed will have many more multiple championships, unless they give way and have no egos. Salute to Robinson and Duncan

Man, you have been doing great with this stuff. I love the split focus between on and off court accomplishments, and how you paint a full picture of a player's career. Yup I agree with you had some solid numbers with a bottom team but couldn’t get them to the playoffs. There are more players deserving to be on the HoF than Aguirre. As a #1 pick it’s easy to average double digit or even more than 20 points, on a low bottom team that is their only star, he was like Demarcus Cousins when playing with the Kings, had solid numbers but couldn’t get the team to the playoffs. Greatness like LbJ, Jordan, Webber, Iverson and among others had garbage teams, but when they arrived on the teams that they were playing in, their teams become playoff contenders every year

Russell retired in 1969, Wilt in 73, and ABA merger was in 76. The NBA had adapted pretty well by the time the 70’s ended and the 80’s began.
@Fantline
@Fantline 6 месяцев назад
I don’t know how old you are and I’m glad you’re highlighting this time period and with all that said the game hit a point of stagnation in terms of TV recognition though the game had the ABA merger the mid 70’s until 1980 was like a dark age for the NBA. The Lakers were bad, the Celtics were bad and the Knicks were bad after coming from their glory days of the early 70’s so as a situation of marketing there was no big city team in the spotlight consistently and there was no repeat champion for the entire decade and most of all a lot of advertisers backed away because the NBA had a reputation of constant fighting so when Bird and Magic came along it was a shot of adrenaline because most notably they elevated Boston and Los Angeles, two cities TV and the advertisers were clamoring for and that’s when the turnaround began.
@Ometecuhtli
@Ometecuhtli 5 месяцев назад
I wasn't alive to see that era but I believe the problem was the dilution of talent that came with the league expansion as I saw how it affected the game too in the mid 90s. They had to invent something and came up with the 3-pt line in 1979-80 or so, the mid-90s also tried to make scoring easier which unfortunately for the game was abused by players like Shaq.

Hakeem is my 2nd favorite player all time, right behind Arvydas Sabonis. Sorry, I have regional bias since I'm from Portland and Sabonis could have been the best center ever had he started when Portland drafted him. The fact that he was still SO good even after injuries and being a much older rookie is a testament to his skills. But, Hakeem really is second to none. Just watch what he did to a young Shaq in the finals. Superb!

@kennethpage417
@kennethpage417 6 месяцев назад
I agree, when Sabonis came to Portland he was not the prime Sabonis anymore, but still played great on that team, can shoot outside and inside, still have a little quickness despite his size and age, if only Sabomis came right to Portland on his prime, Drexler would already have a championship before he chased a ring in Houston. Assuming that Sam Bowie never got the injury that he went through m, plus with Drexler and a young Sabonis, the Portland will have a really solid lineup. In fairness to Sam Bowie, they said he was like a draft bust, I don’t think he was a draft bust, it just happened that he had acquired a career ending injury just like Sampson. I’m not saying that Jordan is not a better player, MJ was miles ahead a better player, but since the Portland got Clyde that’s the reason they have chosen Bowie over MJ, it just happened that Sam Bowie at the beginning of his career already have a knee issue, which the team doctor said it was okay, Bowie already have the injury when he was still in college. Bowie was not a bad selection, it just became bad because of the situation that happened, plus the way MJ played, even nobody thought that MJ would be that great, everyone knows that they expect MJ to be great, but MJ more than exceeded that expectation with his high flying acrobatic dunks. (Coming from a Laker fan)

I love your response! The sam bowie situation was truly tragic, and I agree with no one saw MJ becoming that good. Robinson is an under rated center, it just happened (b4 d arrival of Tim) that he hadn’t had enough great role and bench teammates, unlike Olajuwon who had teammates that are far way better than Robinsons’s teammates. Olajuwon was just fortunate that the Rockets team and the management had put up solid pieces that would battle for the championship
@Ometecuhtli
@Ometecuhtli 5 месяцев назад
Both Olajuwon and Robinson had good pieces at the start of their careers (Ralph Sampson in Houston, Cummings and Hot Rod in SA) but both organizations squandered their chances by making head scratching decisions (what was Rodman doing in SA? Olajuwon's supporting cast before their championship was mediocre). Houston made the 1st move in 1993, great guards, dependable bench and all-around much better team, San Antonio wouldn't prosper until Duncan's arrival which was pure luck as there's no way to get that type of team with a healthy David & Elliot. Tim was also much more vocal, people criticize Lebron as "LeGM" but back then Duncan threatened to leave for Orlando and demanded a new stadium, which the people of San Antonio paid for with a city tax.
@kennethpage417
@kennethpage417 5 месяцев назад
@@Ometecuhtli had no idea about that kind of new stadium. But during those Robinson and Olajuwon battle against each other on the West (the season the Rockets won B2B) Olajuwon had the luxury of having more good teammates and deep bench rosters, (Smith,Horry, Maxwell, Cassel, Drexler and among others, just look at the careers of that other players after they left the team (not the aging ones like Drexler who is a late addition) While Robinson only had Elliot which I can say another all star player. It’s just like the same as experts would say, Bill Russel always had won the chip against Wilt, having the luxury of playing with great teammates helps you propel even more. Just look at how many HoF teammates that Russel had compared to Wilt. Robinson and Olajuwon is actually equal or even in terms of playing, both players had done quadruple double stats, which is a very unique and hard thing to do, so both of them have greatness in their skillset, but in overall agility, quickness and ability I pick Robinson (only by an inch) over Olajuwon, their matchup was just Olajuwon had the benefit of having more good teammates. Robinson’s only luxury is when Tim arrived in SA.

I remember that draft like it was yesterday,and the Houston Rockets made the Best deal in their history by choosing Hakeem Olajuwon. I wouldn't change Hakeem Olajuwon for MJ at anytime or under any circunstance. Hakeem Olajuwon was the Real Deal, the "Dream". The best draft in NBA History the 1984 one. PS: i wonder why some people put Shaquille O'Neal above Hakeem on some lists( are so many) of the Best players ( centers) in the history of the game. Must be this younger generation that never seen Hakeem Olajuwon play for real. Hakeem Olajuwon "Eats" Shaquille O'Neal in every aspect of the game, with no doubt whatsoever. One of the Greatest Ever.

The draft consisted of twenty rounds and selected 218 players. Draftee career notes Lew Alcindor (later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) from UCLA was selected first overall by the Milwaukee Bucks. He went on to win the Rookie of the Year Award and was selected to both All-NBA Second Team and All-Star Game in his first season. how about a video of all the other players drafted in the 69 draft. please

I had season tickets to the Warriors starting in the 1997-98 season when I was just 8. Sitting in front of us was this old couple. Probably late 50s, early 60s. The man was leather-lunged and I loved him. He'd rant and rave. Huge homer. Sometimes he'd go on tirades about how much he hated Al Attles, the head coach/GM who did the Joe Barely Cares trade. "If Red Auerbach is telling you what a good deal it is, you should know damn well it's a shit deal! Al 'Attles! Three time all-star, fifty time f*cking rube! Did you know we could have had (insert name of guy Golden State passed over in the draft) if not for Attles?!" Some of his claims were dubious, but whenever John Stockton played, he brought up how Attles passed over Stockton, and then he'd go on a rant about drafting Chris Washburn, saying Attles must have been on whatever Washburn was on to draft him. Without fail. I miss that guy. He'd compare every dirty play to either Danny Ainge or Bill Laimbeer, and without fail, he'd say "I take it back. I take it back. Nobody was worse than Laimbeer. God, what a piece of shit that guy was!" I'm sure that old fart must be dead by now but sometimes I have dreams where I'm a kid seeing the awful late 90s/early 2000s Warriors and that guy is there, screaming like a banshee.

Patrick Ewing also got the Knicks to the finals as an no. 8 seed in 1999, but by that time he was hurting the team. Nagging injuries meant he would be in and out of the lineup. I say he was hurting the team because they won most of the games in which he didn't play and lost most of the games in which he did play. The Knicks lost to the Spurs in five games, the first championship for that franchise, Tim Duncan and Gregg Popovich.

I take it you're young. Olajuwon was *never* Sampson's sidekick, and Jordan leaving had literally nothing to do with the Rockets winning those titles. The Rockets are the single team with a winning record during the Jordan era, and Olajuwon noticeably aged in the '96 season. Pretty simple.

More to the point re Sampson skipping the 82 Draft, he’s discussed more than once that he didn’t want the 50% chance of the Clippers winning the coin flip. In 82, there were still open loopholes that allowed him to return to school well after knowing that the Lakers and Clippers were in the coin toss for the first pick. I have a Sampson interview with Chick Hearn circa 84 where Ralph himself admitted that as the reason. Of course, content from 1984 isn’t that prevalent, but I used to have it on my chan before the NBA blocked 99% of my recaps. However, the Clipper thing was discussed as NBA gossip at that time, so it was a known thing. And Worthy in his jersey retirement ceremony in 95/6 thanked God (literally) that the Cliops lost that toss. Forum crowd loved it, but going to Sterling instead of Showtime was a terrifying thought for the top 82 candidates.

Wow didn’t know that the legendary Chick Hearn had interviewed Ralph Sampson and questioned that. This could have been another kind of “WHAT IF” Ralph Sampson applied for the draft in 82’ and went to the Lakers teaming up with Kareem and Magic, the Lakers would have their own version of twin towers, just like the Wilt and Bill era, (not as teammates) Jabbar era then the passing of the baton to Sampson’s era (minus the injury) the Lakers would surely more than dominate the league (even thou they have dominated the 80’s together with the Celts) Wished the Lakers have acquired Ralph Sampson and Len Bias played with the Celtics. It will be a much more great battle and rivalries between those two teams, even going to the early 90’s. So MJ will only dominate the mid 90’s or maybe not because Bias will be his opponent, with Lewis also not having the kind of career that had happened. Wonder if Hank Gathers made it to the nba which team would he played for? But James Worthy would still have a solid nba career and a franchise player on whichever team he went, even the great Chick Hearn and some announcers acknowledges James Worthy, that they stated even if Big Game James went to other team, he will be their franchise player that will produce a much more solid numbers, and will still be a consistent perennial all-star player

It looked like this guy was told most of these stories. The one he really got correct was the Ralph Samson which was the Wembayanma before the Wembayanma. He said Hakeem got his 2 championships because Jordan left Basketball during that time. Really??? Jordan’s team would not be any problem for Hakeem’s team. The problem was inside the conference of Hakeem’s team. The SuperSonics and the Jazz. If not for those, they would have tamed Jordan’s bull at least twice. I’ve also never heard of the KKK story before. There were also many errors on the article.

Wow! I truly salute you. I was really taken aback by your reply. What a reply!!! I'm highly impressed. The reason behind my reply is there was no one to check Hakeem. Their PF had gone. That was why Orlando walked over them. Meanwhile, the Rockets had Vernon Maxwell that'll give Jordan some tough times. During a 3 year period, the Rockets beat them 5 times and they beat the Rockets once. Thosewerr the regular seasons though. The Rockets also matched up well with them. The only team that always beat the Bulls were the Rockets. When the playoffs come, the SuperSonics wouldn't let the Rockets advance to go play the Bulls.

Another thing is if Michael Jordans dad death affected him soo much that he felt the need to retire from basketball, then how good would he have been if he forced himself to play through it? Would we have seen a burnt out Michael that flails in the playoffs because he wasn't mentally there?
