Thanks for another most interesting and useful video. I really enjoy the relaxed, engaging styles of both you two gentlemen.

An underrated bird for the forest engine is peaceful dove! Getting eggs in the forest without giving any to your opponents is very strong. Pairs very well with other food generating powers :)

I’m still feeling that one out. Power to gain egg in forest is great. But one grain for an egg doesn’t feel like a great trade… it’s not much of an upgrade from mourning dove…

My favorite is the Galah. Can be played in forest or grasslands, 2 tucks from the deck, and your opponent isn't even guaranteed to get the seed. 3 seeds is expensive but worth it in my opinion if you have other good engine birds around it.

Absolutely! With easier access to food in OE, it’s a bird worth investing in for most situations.

The best thing about spangled Drongo is that the other player doesn't even have to gain the nectar from the birdfeeder itself Willie wagtail is dangerous if you decide to reset the row and flop over a raven you can't pick up. I love the Blythes Hornbill, it feels like a harder to optimize EIE or Bonelli's point bomb, bit more point potential too. I love the grey Butcherbird, it's strong and hits so many bonus cards The raibow lorikeet is a great early bird it can mean an auto nectar win in the forest and more nectar to use elsewhere, but it falls off quickly if you don't play it early Kiwi is the best bird to play with a game end power IMO Little Penguin is my top bait bird in OE is the little penguin. It's so cute, and its power sounds so awesome that you just have to play it. But it just fails so consistently that it is very rarely worth a play being as expensive as it is.

Glad you agree with many of our picks!

Hmmm. How does the Little Penguin compare to the Atlantic Puffin, though? Both are 3 fish and a star nest. I wouldn’t be surprised if both produce similar point totals if you average across all games.

I would take puffin over little penguin

Great video! If I can suggest a couple ideas for follow-up videos (from either or both of you): 1) a general guide to Oceania (expanding more on things you mention in this video, like how forest strategies have gotten a lot better while the grassland feels weaker), and 2) cards from base game/EE that got better or worse (maybe a list of the "biggest winners" and "biggest losers") The ravens definitely feel weaker in the new expansion (though still good), while some cards (like those that work well in grasslands engines, or lay eggs outside the grassland) seem to have gotten a noticeable bump.

Those are great ideas! Thank you.

If I may be so bold, the sleeper bird in Oceania for me has been the masked lapwing (when played, reset the birdfeeder and take 1 of each type available). It's useful at nearly all points in the game, it hardly ever gets less than 4 food, and it is an incredible tempo spike. Food generation is so incredibly valuable in the Oceania set. Severely under-rated bird in my humble opinion.

Lapwing is amazing! Surprisingly viable even in mid game, even though it’s a one point bird.

I have to agree with the rainbow lorikeet. I’ve got it early in three games, it’s strong. Always great content

I love the australian ibis. The game needs more interaction with the cemetry.

Agree! More digging in the discard piles!

I just played it in my recent game and it’s an A-tier bird IMO. It’s a way to draw cards in the grassland, while still giving you the option to tuck points. And it’s not like there’re only bad birds in the discard pile. Some of them were just not suitable for the early game, but can be perfect in the later stages. I really like it. 👌

I found a crazy pairing with a frigate (similar to penguin) discarding fish and leaving one for a pelican to tuck

Grey Shrikethrush is my favorite. It’s not uncommon to land 2-3 caches a turn. You will accumulate around 8 or 9 points a game from a one food bird u can play turn one. It’s absurdly good

Spangled Drongo is too strong in 2 player games - it's very oppressive. We've banned its play in 1v1.

There is some irony in how strong this bird is. In Australian slang to call someone a “drongo” is certainly no compliment. It basically means a person who is not too bright or a bit of an idiot or fool.

Do y'all like Oceania? I've played maybe 5 games and I think I actually prefer the game without it. I don't like the nectar race and I think nectar trivializes gaining food to play birds too much

Quite a big difference from base game for sure. I think there’s a lot of novelty that are still settling in with the digital launch. Will be interesting to see what are people opinions on this after everyone has a chance to dive into the game more.

I like Oceania because the board moves people away from laying eggs and more towards drawing more cards. The bird cards and the strategies involved really make the game great.
