Mine was checked recently and is in the 300’s which is strange. I don’t eat fatty foods or meat or dairy because I have IBS. I only weigh 105 and I am relatively young. My doctor put me on medication today but I am worried about the side effects. Is it dangerous if I don’t take the medication?
Hi Anja, there are no symptoms of high cholesterol. It is a silent disease. Until it causes problems with arterial disease like angina, heart attack and strokes.
Not true 100 percent,my mom when ever she had high cholesterol she would feel sleepy and feeling weaker and problems with her eyes. Know that I am older and cholesterol higher I felt the same . So sure enough I went get checked out and what do you know, high cholesterol.
HI Dr. Yesterday I gave Blood Symple and Lab technician told me I Have High castrol i.e.430 .....Please Tellme some precautions that i should follow ..i.e what should i do ..and shouldn' t Do ....
Hi Guloong, a cholesterol of 430 is very high. At that level you need to see a cardiologist. That kind of level is often seen with familial hyperlipidemia. However it is difficult to diagnose without the full panel. Did they say what the triglycerides and ldl or apob were?
As a cardiologist are you able to give more info on familiaral cholesterol…would you recommend having a coronary calcium scan b4 taking any drugs? As an aside, I lived in Singapore for 5 years….miss the life there!
Hi Lucy, familial hyper cholesterolemia can cause cad at a young age. Often there is no calcium present but extensive plaque disease. Sometimes doing a full ct coronary angiogram is a better option in these patients. Most patients with FH require lifelong cholesterol lowering with medication.
Hi Jack, it is not a commonly used term, but it is used sometimes when people have a genetic cholesterol disorder. Best to check with your doctor. Mike
Hi Vicos, if your high cholesterol is already causing problems with arterial disease then potentially it could cause foggy eyesight. Glad you got it picked up.
@@keymythic6362 if you are concerned about high cholesterol take a blood test , it doesn't cost much or its for free. Try to overcome lazyness couse lot of time is wasted.💪
Hi doc, I eat all the healthy foods (chia, oats, nuts, seeds, EVOO, psyllium, omega3, chicken breast) and yet I seem to have High ldl cholesterol of 171. I also jog 3-4 times a week. My hdl is 56. Total cholesterol is 249. Where should I start to fix this please?
A keto diet can be useful for someone who is overweight with insulin resistance. Not everybody tolerates it though, and for many it is not sustainable. If you also have high cholesterol it could also potentially worsen your lipid profile, so best discuss with your personal doctor first.
Can I add, it depends how you do keto. If you eat foods like nuts. Avocado and organic olive oil and occasional organic ghee and have lots of fibre from vegetables like broccoli, Cauliflower, salads etc your lipid profile will be very different to doing keto via eating bacon at every meal. Fish that is high in omega 3, chicken and eggs should be your main sources of protein on keto. Maybe 2-4 x per month red meat but only grass fed and ruminant animals. Yes, keto is a more expensive diet, but if you eat seed oils, margarine and cheap processed meats, you will loose weight but your lipid profile will be awful. I've been doing keto for a while now, I have lost weight (fat not muscle) but have a healthy lipid profile. Fish, and oily fish are essential part of my weekly diet. I eat fish at least 3x a week. I have Greek yoghurt and berries every morning, lots of salad or vegetables (low carb veg) with each meal so I have adequate fibre. Lots of water. Organic chicken. Keto done right is really healthy.
Cholesterol is essential. It makes up the cell wall of every cell in your body. It’s important that you look at your LDL and ApoB levels, but also look at your other cardiac risk markers.
My cholesterol level I'm told is very high and I believe it's because I eat a huge amount of fat and put cream in my coffee. I've suffered no problems over it and can't help thinking it's perfectly normal. My body has made my cholesterol to cope with the fat I eat, to make the bile to complete the circle so I shan't be taking medications for it.
Hi Pepper, some people do get high LDL-C when they eat a lot of saturated fat. About 10-15% of the population respond in this way. Unfortunately nobody knows if this is benign or it leads to accelerated cardiovascular disease, despite what a lot of the keto community say. One thing you can consider testing is switching your fats to unsaturated fats or taking lipid lowering therapy.
@@DrMikeMacDonald Well I'll ask my doctor about therapy as I've never heard of it but I'm seventy now and there's nothing wrong with my heart etc. but thank you very much for the reply. Therapy?
Today I found out I have very high cholesterol because I had weakness and some times vertigo and the same happened to my friend month ago he had the same symptoms
@@DrMikeMacDonald sir let me share my health problem.ie i use my hand to take out my poo if not cant poo it . it turns hard like stone and i have fever at my back side and head pain what disease is related pliz tell me i will be grate dil respected sir..
Some young patients with familial hyperlipidemia can have a ring as you describe, it is called corneal arcus. Yellow patches in the iris are not commonly a sign of high cholesterol but best get them reviewed by your doctor.
I have high cholesterol, dry eyes, swollen ankle, pain on right joint of shoulder, the video did not give any indication of what to look out for so that was but useless, I thought all my signs were indicating diabetes but it was dangerous level of cholesterol… get checked
Hi, that’s right. It is to highlight that high cholesterol is asymptomatic and can only be diagnosed with blood tests. A common misconception is that it is symptomatic.
Hi Carolyn, I think this highlights that cholesterol is not the only risk factor. Some people can have “normal” levels and still get early vascular disease.
Hi. I just did blood test after 1 month of my delivery.i am 35 years. My dr told me that i have high cholesterol which is 6.7 Triglyceride is 3.1 HDLC 1.1 Ldl c 4.2 Tc hdlc 6.1 Non hdlc 5.6 I just wants to know do i need medication? Bcoz Dr dont give any medicine
Hi Josh, high cholesterol can lead to atherosclerosis and narrowing of arteries anywhere in the body. A stroke happens when a plaque in your brain arteries, ruptures causing a clot to form and blocking blood to the brain.
Hyperlipidemia, in most people has no symptoms so the only way to detect it is a blood test. Peaople with genetic hyperlipidemia may notice some skin changes with cholesterol entering the skin, but this is uncommon. However severe hyperlipidemia over time can lead to vascular disease that can cause symptoms.
@@DrMikeMacDonald Sir, doctors don't accept if I mention to them some symptoms concerning high cholesterol levels. However, I would like to tell everyone out loud that whenever my triglyceride levels go up I get disturbed sleep and mild giddiness after eating oily foods.
Hahaha. You make a good point! However, the cholesterol in your body is largely made by your body, so you can enjoy a mcd once in a while and it won’t affect your cholesterol.
That is very high cholesterol. I cant comment on your individual case, but high cholesterol doesn't cause symptoms, however lipids at that level increase the risk of atherosclerosis. Worth seeing a physician for assessment.
Hi Eric, that’s the point I am trying to make. There are no symptoms of high cholesterol! That’s why everyone needs to get a blood test to assess their level. I have seen patients with LDL-Cof 500 with no symptoms at all.
@@DrMikeMacDonald 🤦♂️ Sorry Doc, I just been anxious trying to find out what I have due to symptoms. It’s a bad habit of googling symptoms which we need to stop and instead make an appointment to prevent further complications. Thanks for a kind reply and sorry for my sarcasm.
