What big trucking companies don't want you to know.

In this video I send a message out to all the rookies coming into the trucking industry. Basically letting them know about the big trucking company and how they'll use and abuse you. There is a lot of money in trucking so don't get comfortable with the company your with.

This is good advice. My advice on the reason why 90% of owner ops fail their first 1-2 years is because of that driver mindset. You guys have to start thinking like a fleet owner. You have to know your truck and trailer in and out. Don’t run it until it breaks. You need to put time aside for maintenance and repair. Replace steer tires every 200k, replace oil filter every 20-30k, replace air dryer every 3 years or 300k, replace pistons every 500k..so many things on the list. Your mpg is not your only operations cost. My last advice is use an older engine. A cat or a Detroit diesel. You can argue all you want about automatic transmissions and their mpg. Please show me an automatic transmission with 1 million miles on it. My cat c15 has 5 million miles on it, she’s withstood the test of time and is easy to repair.

Being an owner operator can also make you broke. When my work truck breaks down and needs to be towed and fixed, I get keys to another one and keep making money. When a tire blows, I get paid by the hour to sit and wait for it to be replaced, which costs me nothing. I don't pay for fuel, tolls, insurance, etc; the company does. I get to walk away with $90-100k per year without the headaches and the BS and I work the amount I want, locally. (And the taxes are simpler to deal with each year.) When I take a vacation, I get a paycheck, but as an owner operator, I would just have bills and no revenue that week. I have enough BS to deal with as a homeowner and having a car to maintain. I don't need to have an expensive piece of equipment that's just waiting to bankrupt me if the fuel prices spike or the work dries up. The company I'm in has about a dozen revenue sources and a billion dollars in revenue each year, which is more resilient than a one truck operation. They've survived like 12 major recessions and mostly deal in cash to keep debt maintenance cost out of the picture. You might think I'm saying all of this because I'm confused by the numbers, but I have a BS of Business and Finance. I've put a lot of thought into the issue and I'd rather buy rental properties than a truck.

I just got my license and started out with a company that’s paying me $0.50 per mile a month ago. I am already doing my homework and research to own my truck in 2 to 3 years. I’ve been asking other truckers questions every chance I get. All of them were helpful and encouraging, but with fair warning. You’re in it to make money, not to spend. I’ve heard a few of them say most people who start out as an independent trucker are excited about the money and what they can do with it, which are the first thing wrong with their mindset.

Yes and those bonuses are nullified if you have a late delivery or a fender bender. They have so many promises and they know new drivers aren’t ever going to see a bonus unless lightning strikes their butt. Listen to this man and prosper or listen to the company and be a zombie driver earning barely enough to feed yourself much less your family. The company don’t tell you about the unpaid lay overs. Or four hours to unload because the place is a warehouse hub for the whole east coast. Listen to experience drivers. Keep the shiny side up . Remember you can be the best driver in the world and still have the worst drivers in the world run over your butt. SEMPER FIDELIS

100% on point! That company truck makes about 5000 or more per week and they give you four to five hundred of it as a rookie. Even with years of experience your not going to make no more than 1300 a week after taxes. But hey some drivers are ok with making someone else rich instead of themselves. There’s levels to this business. I was once in the dark myself. Until one day I woke up.

Real talk, getting my own truck was a life changing move financially. I drove for a company local after Crete let me go after a week "background" found local work on CList. 1 year later the same company sold me a truck 2006 century. I still have it. 3 years later doing containers home daily. $1200-$1500 a week. I wouldn't let fear of failure stop me.

Getting your own is the only way to eat...
@heinzkitzvelvet
@heinzkitzvelvet 5 лет назад
I'm making $1200 a week, home every night and I'm company. I don't need the headache of paying all the truck bills and repairs and such. Been trucking 7 years this November. This is the best money I've ever made in my life and I'm at the bottom of the pay scale on this lane. I think I'm gonna stick with it.
@miguelrobb5719
@miguelrobb5719 5 лет назад
Heinzkitz Velvet folks that keep saying "I don't want the repair bill and the headache " has never been in owner operator themselves. These trucks are expensive to repair, but everything on these trucks are built to last. $1200? I could net twice that number, barely even trying. And I'm leased on with Werner. I can work when i want, go home when i want and stay home for however long i want. I don't have to worry about building leave time or waiting for my day off. Once you go owner operator, you will never wanna go back. But don't get me wrong. 1200 a week is still fucking good money. I'm going to assume that's gross. It's still a lot better than what most traditional jobs pay. I'm not knocking your hustle, but a lot of company drivers always come out and assume being in owner operator is a headach. It ain't a cake walk but it is not as hard as people make it sound. Either way. Company driver or owner operator.... we are all eating a lot better than the average folks lol
@heinzkitzvelvet
@heinzkitzvelvet 5 лет назад
Miguel Robb You right. I've never owned a truck. Don't want to own a truck. Don't need to own a truck. Sure, I could take on all that responsibility and make twice the money. But a sizeable portion of that big money has to go into your repair bills account. Another portion has to go to payments and insurance and this and that. If you have your own trailer, there's another set of bills and I can see with my own eyes that people make a lot of money running under their own authority out here. But that's for people who want to run all over the place, all the time so they can ride in that long based Pete 389 that's all dolled up and petty. Or whatever it is they're out here trying to do. I'm saying I don't want to be out for weeks at a time anymore. I like being home everyday. Working 5 days a week and off weekends.... Well, most weekends. I'm actually laying in the bunk writing this right now waiting for a Saturday run. Subaru is running, so I'm running today. But this is the kind of trucking I got into this business to do. This is the money and home time I was looking for. So for me, it's perfect. I can take this money and all this home time and start up a little eBay/Amazon business and build it up to be what I want it to be. I drove the whole nation and that was a lot of fun, but I don't want to be out there like that anymore. Some folks love running the countryside for 30 years. Not me. This was never going to be a decades long career for me. It's a stepping stone to the next level.
@miguelrobb5719
@miguelrobb5719 5 лет назад
Heinzkitz Velvet you are wrong about me needing to deduct most of that money to my repairs and expenses. Insurance, money to be set aside for future repairs, fuel. All of that stuff is automatically taken out before the pay check even gets to me. And i don't own a trailer btw. Look. Most of us is afraid of that big risk. I understand. But you shouldn't go around and try to scare everyone away from a chance to be their own boss. Owner operator just wasn't for your friends, and it surely isn't for you.

@cw3610
@cw3610 4 года назад
As a rookie its best to research the companies that are willing to hire a unexperienced driver and right now there's quite a few of them because they don't have good driver retention. It's best to do your earning on their trucks because they expect you to make mistakes. Also decide on what you want to haul. Dry box isn't going to pay as good as hazardous materials (example). If you decide to buy a truck to become a owner-operator, I wouldn't recommend buying one from the same company that you work for. Again, shop around and research. On a yearly average, after all the bills are paid,(fuel, truck payments, insurance, etc.) and you have cut costs everywhere that you can,( such as not eating out much or staying in hotels often) , you might make between 4 to 6K a month in profit but don't forget that you have to pay taxes on that so squirrel some bucks aside. It can be profitable if you work hard and smart. Thumbs up and hammer down

The one I'm with now they don't care for the drivers here and it's really sad man.They keep you out on the Road 3to 4 weeks at a time and you make small money 3,4,5 dollars week that's crazy. That is crazy for Real.

All and I mean “ALL” of these companies see hundreds of thousands of drivers go through their doors, when you leave they don’t even remember your name three days later. We are all a number.

Every Teamster organized company that I worked for either had me home every night or had me in a nice motel till my load was ready to go back home. There may be a via along the way back home, but you will be home within two or three days at most.

I started moving freight after the Army for the simplicity of it all. Being an owner op would take away from that. Once you get that truck you are locked in and have to be on your hustle or you will go under. I dont want or need that headache. Ill drive the company truck and make my $700-$1000 a week net. Its all about what you need and what you want.

Great video.... Myself im just starting my trucking adventure. Im going thru the process to start my cdl training. Interview...drug test...etc. Now i hear conflicting stories about leasing and O/O..and im sure you can make a good amount of money, especially when your truck is new and working 100 percent. But as the miles tack on and you have to deal with bad tires and parts breaking, being broken down on the side of the road and dealing with tow costs etc...im also sure it can get expensive as hell. Personally...i dont want the headache that comes with those sorts of issues and the stress that comes with worrying about them. Especially being new. Not to mention being new you don't really know if you will be doing this long term. You might do 6 months and just get fed up. Personally i look at it this way. While im new ill let the company worry about gas prices and tire costs....ill just worry about driving. If i complete my 1yr to15 month contractual agreement time with the company and im still loving my new career and see myself doing it long term.... Then ill look into buying my own truck...and even then it would be a maybe at best. It is a huge undertaking when these trucks cost as much as, or more than some houses. Thats never something to get into on a whim or without proper consideration for all the variables. That being said...at this point..... I just hope i get accepted to do the training....lol *crosses fingers*

What you saying is true, 3 years from the day you post this many owner ops have literally destroyed smaller company and the chances to get authority because they were t properly trained. It’s nit as easy as it sounds but big ups to you for giving advice to the new comers.

Hello, just about 3 yrs ago I acquired my class B w/Air Brakes and Passenger. This year for summer time I did some OTR with a driveaway company and got the opportunity to drive Tractors without the trailer---and made good money too. It was quite the eye opener. Oh and that log was not a joke either, at least for me. All the hazards of non-compliance. Was approached by some about getting an upgrade to Class A.and of course the upgrade to the money making options too and being home or closer gained my attention. So now, I am seeking what I can do with this license and make the money that I am not making with the school district. I am a small woman and not a spring chicken. And I've worked with several logistic/freight companies in the past but in office so I have an understanding of the paperwork. But all in all, just looking to make better and do better. I appreciate the upload! Thank you much!
