Waylon I delivered those trucks until 1980 when they closed the GM plant in Fremont . It was the only company to deliver 8 full size pickups per load . We delivered all of CA , Oregon , AZ , NV and Idaho , the ones for Washington went by rail . My 75 is a Z code K-10 and I have a Z code 1969 chevelle also .
really cool video! thanks for explaining the VINs! I grew up in Fremont (1960-1972) and went to that GM plant a few times, for elementary school field trips etc... great memories (also went to the old Fremont raceway dragstrip a few times).. it's nice you are fixing your C20.. great truck. great story behind it..
I had a 1984 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 long bed pickup truck and it had a tailgate just like yours. Maybe yours is the same. Don't know for sure but it was nice being able to get fenders and other body parts that'd interchange for so many years. Thanks again for your time today and enjoy your weekend.
The bed is a confusing issue with the fuel doors. They were added in 77 or 78 model years. So that bed is newer buy a long ways. The tailgate looks like it is 81 or 82 with the high end trim. I am very happy to know my 79 is all original with a GM crate 350. What is important is that you are happy. Mine was also built in Fremont California. Bought by my dad brand new from MJ Goss Motors in October 1978. I was driving this truck in the hay field when it was less than a year old. My truck has been a part of my life for 42 and a half years, much longer than most marriages. Your truck has lived a rough and well used life, but you still have it. That is what is important. It deserves to be back on the road after the fire.
im glad you still have that truck.. of course everyone would rather have an all original but I'm happy with the old truck just because of all the stories it can tell.
2wd is a downfall? I remember taking some offroad lines in my old c10 that some of the 4x4s in my group feared to travel... and even when I have a 4x4 in winter, it's gotta be really nasty for me to throw the transfer lever. Keep up the great work and 'preciate ya!
yeah I've had this one in LOTS of places I had no business going! seems like I always managed to get around in it and I dont "ever" recall ever putting chains on it.
That truck deserves to be restored back to its former glory. Vehicles are like family they go trough a lot of trials and tribulations together. I have had a pickup that’s been in my family for 52 years.
Hi Ken I’ve got a 73 short half ton 4x4 that I’ve had since it was new and I can’t imagine not seeing and using it as I do. Mine came without drip moldings on the cab and I’ve kept it that way as to me it’s a cleaner look. If I’m not mistaken, the early 73’s didn’t have them, but later production did. Anyway love all your vids and fully understand the sentimental attachment you have to that truck. Looking forward to seeing you get her back in action.
This certainly is a nice old truck. That tailgate definitely dates to the 1980's and I'll venture a guess 1983 - 1987. Dad had a 1987 half ton 6-lug 4x4 square body. The last year they made square body. Wish he still had it. That truck was nice!! Only thing is it had that old 6.2L V8 diesel that nobody liked. Banks offered a turbo that prepped it up, though. And anybody that's owned a square body back in the day knows you had to shut those doors a little hard because that weather stripping was thick. What's really fun is crank your cabin blower on high and try to shut those doors! Or get you on a hillside and try to close the door "uphill". 😂😂 You'll be struggling! Over the years, dad owned a 1973 GMC pickup, 1979 & 1987 Suburban, and that 1987 C10 and those doors were all the same. Only way to close them a little easier is to crack open a window to relieve air pressure as she closes.
A friend of mine had a 73 Chevy C20 and he used to get pulled over all the time for seat belt violation because it didn't have shoulder belt only lap belt.
Coincidentally, that’s the same way I ended up with a tailgate for one of my trucks! A guy had removed his original tailgate the day he bought the truck and installed a 5th wheel gate on it. He wrapped it up, put it in storage and decided to sell it 20 years later, right when I needed one! It was also extremely lucky, because it was a 1 year only tailgate which I needed, and my truck is also 2 tone and the tailgate just happened to be one of the 2 colors! Gotta love those great finds 👍🏻
My dad got a 73 GMC suberban from a co worker 350 4 bolt main 4speed 4 wheel drive barn doors. I took my road test in it. The inspector gave me a hole block to parallel park. It din't have the thurd row seat it had two big drawers and a queen size bed back there for camping. I drove that to High school and Vo-tec thankfly I didn't get in trouble with a girl back then.
Thanks for the information tailgate is 81-87 chevy silverado looks good and I believe your bed is 78 and newer with the square gas door u got your truck in. 86 the year both of my c10 and c20 trucks were made
I knew most of what those vin numbers meant only because My Mother in Law and Father In Law worked at the Milpitas California Ford Assembly Plant. Do I still have Fords yep I do 2 Fords and one Mercury and they have never let me down.
My 1979 Scottsdale had dual tanks. Each tank was 20 gallons, so I could haul 40 gallons. I was living in Raymond at the time and my girlfriend (now my wife of 37 years) lived in Concrete. I burned 20 gallons to get to Concrete, and another 20 gallons to drive back to Raymond. That 305 V8 was small but thirsty.
I AM REALLY AMUSED AT PERSONS WHO CLAIM TO KNOW MORE ABOUT MY VEHICHLES THAN I DO ! AS LONG AS THEY ARE HAPPY, WE KNOW WHAT WE HAVE, RIGHT ? HAAAAAAA ! KEEP ON TRUCKIN !
Its a Good looking 73 Squarebody Waylon. You did an amazing job fixing it up and making it YOURS.. Wow after the accident that the mechanic had with it. The Man stepped up big time and fixed it all back up. Can you imagine that happening in todays World.unless hes still around. ..With how people are today..Hurray for themselves and Screw everyone else Attitude...Great Video to proof to the keyboard warriors what year your Chevy truck is...LOL..HAHA..Cant people just enjoy the videos..
he's still around and is a stand up guy. yeah it amazes me how the keyboard mechanics think they know more about my truck than I do when I owned it before they were born! haha
@@1963impala2drWaylonWire Yes Sir Your Absolutely Correct...I just dont know what this Country has become..I love it when You put them in there place. What there parents should of done years ago...LOL..HAHA...Thank You for the reply Sir. The old Squarebody is looking Good. Have a Good evening..
I owned a 76 and an 85. Still have a 78 blazer and a 75 C65. I'm certainly not doubting you but is it possible that the front clip was changed before you got it? That looks to me (from the video perspective) like 80's fenders and hood also the mirrors. IDK maybe my memory is failing. 70's fenders and hood stood up proud and square with a lot of frontal area on the hood compared to 80's. Maybe I'm just not seeing it right in the video compared to actually looking at it. I agree that is an 80's bed and tailgate. My 85 was a short wheel base 2wd with a high output 305. It had dual tanks. I loved the dual tanks. Sure wish I had kept it. Bought an 89 swb GMC which I still have. Sold the 85 to a friend who died. Don't know what happened to it
@@1963impala2drWaylonWire I wasn't doubting you in the least Waylon. It just doesn't look correct in the video. Doesn't mean it's wrong or wouldn't look right in person. No insult intended.
@@charliehill6914 no insult taken m'friend.. was just joking with you. im having trouble finding a stock square hood. I found 3 of the sloped ones like you described. I really don't want an aftermarket hood.
My 73 didn't have doors for the fuel tank just a fuel cap. I would say the bed also came from a later year. Whatever the case when you find good usable parts I say do it.
good tip.. they are almost impossible to close without cracking the window a bit. I'm just trying to think where a guy would attach the straps on the inside of the doors
@@1963impala2drWaylonWire I hook to the frame over the door knob through the window through the other window over the doorknob and down to the frame. I also used rags between the straps and the doors so it doesn't scratch your paint. Don't put too much pressure on and put a dent in your door. Sorry about your truck!
So many "experts"...breaking into a cold sweat over the dual tank bed and the later model tailgate, lol! You took that truck and made it your own, and that's what you're supposed to do. That's the culture of hot rodding or rat rodding: if you don't have any imagination, this isn't for you. Where did you get the information on your truck from - I'd like to decode some of the VINs from cars I had a long time ago.
@@1963impala2drWaylonWire i was thinking of a episode of only fools and horses . when trigger said he had the same broom for many years , it only had 5 new heads and 6 new handles . boom boom
