Romans 5:6-8 “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commends his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

Before we are justified our weakness and hopelessness before God is marked by enmity toward God, eyes that don't see God and ears that don't hear him. We love the darkness of sin rather than the light of God. Sin has dominion over us and we are its servants. Our condition is described as being “dead” in trespasses and sins, while the wrath of God abides upon us.
