While almost every day of the year is warm and sunny here in Arizona, we do get some chilly nights each winter that can make gardening with subtropicals a bit of a challenge. We live outside of Phoenix, in a part of town where the farmers grow peach and pecan orchards, rather than the citrus groves of the Phoenix suburbs. This means it gets a little colder for us than other parts of the Valley, and we know that our sensitive plants need protection from below-freezing temperatures.
We didn't frost protect, though! We had too much confidence in the microclimates we've been working on, and wrongly assumed that our yard was mature enough to tolerate a few nights in the 20s. We were wrong! While maybe only one tree actually died from the frost, quite a few look pretty rough right now, and we wanted to take the opportunity to share this failure with you guys!
Sometimes winter gardening can be discouraging, but try to keep a positive outlook. We've made a point to highlight a few plants in our yard that have continued to look fantastic through the winter, but also want to show what can happen to non-native species when they're not cared for properly in harsh weather conditions.
Has your winter been colder or warmer than usual? How have your plants reacted? Let us know in the comments!
