While almost every day of the year is warm and sunny here in Arizona, we do get some chilly nights each winter that can make gardening with subtropicals a bit of a challenge. We live outside of Phoenix, in a part of town where the farmers grow peach and pecan orchards, rather than the citrus groves of the Phoenix suburbs. This means it gets a little colder for us than other parts of the Valley, and we know that our sensitive plants need protection from below-freezing temperatures.
We didn't frost protect, though! We had too much confidence in the microclimates we've been working on, and wrongly assumed that our yard was mature enough to tolerate a few nights in the 20s. We were wrong! While maybe only one tree actually died from the frost, quite a few look pretty rough right now, and we wanted to take the opportunity to share this failure with you guys!
Sometimes winter gardening can be discouraging, but try to keep a positive outlook. We've made a point to highlight a few plants in our yard that have continued to look fantastic through the winter, but also want to show what can happen to non-native species when they're not cared for properly in harsh weather conditions.
Has your winter been colder or warmer than usual? How have your plants reacted? Let us know in the comments!

Yea it has been really cold down here this winter. Aloe has taken a big hit from it. Stay Positive you are both awesome so happy, all the time, even when disaster strikes a tree like that.

No..... not the Carrie..... Thanks for sharing this lesson. Reminds us that mother nature still calls the shots. But sometimes these types of events create an opportunity to try something new. As you both so eloquently show, no use getting upset. Chin up and "Carrie" on.

So what’s the next step after frost damage? Prune all the damaged areas away down to live viable parts?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden Год назад
Good question! Yes but not until after the last frost has passed.

Our winter here in Las Vegas has been very unusually warm just like the other years starting from 2014. The coldest it has gotten was 34°F (1°C) and that was only for one day around late December! I can now say with confidence that tropical trees can grow here in Las Vegas, Nv and in other places south of us.

Hello, how did your soursop hold up? I’m still deciding to keep ours indoors or move it permanently outside? Thanks Matthew in Laveen, AZ
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
Ours totally defoliated, but it should start waking up again in April. Try moving it outside but leave it in its container, and if it seems happy where you place it, try putting it in the ground! Ours hasn't grown much in the last 2 years but that means it stays easy to protect if need be!

Greenies Garden Thanks guys, yeah it’s probably best if I just keep it in the pot, can’t believe this crazy weather we’re having, we just planted our tomatoes crop two weeks ago, and now this cold front moving in😢

This recent freeze I wasn’t able to protect my Alphonso Mango 🥭 😭 I’m so sad because this variety is hard to get a hold of. I’m located in deep Deep South tx. So we do not get as cold as it did.
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 2 года назад
Oh man, that is so disappointing. We have lost a ton of plants to frost, so now we don't force certain trees to grow in our yard anymore. If you find another Alphonso and you want to give it another go, you can try growing it in a container that you can move inside or onto a porch during those really cold nights!

The soursop defoliated, but it is still green under the bark and should wake up in about April for us :) Hope your mangos are OK!

What shall I do with the dead leaves or cut them off or trim it ?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 2 года назад
It's usually best to remove dead leaves after any danger of frost has passed for the winter.

I am in central Florida and my two Cari(sp?) are dead from the frost. My other mangoes have some top frost damage. I am thinking that maybe cari is more sensitive to frost? I think Truly Tropical channel may have the information on cold tolerant varieties.

How do you frost protect it then ?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
There are lots of different ways, from making miniature green houses around each tree to wrapping it in frost cloth. It doesn't hurt to try a few different methods at once if you have something you really want to take care of!
