One of the guys who built the original Enterprise model in Burbank died a few weeks ago. Melvin L. Keys, age 94, of Sulphur, Louisiana passed away on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. RIP. He appears in that picture of the 11 foot model outside Production Model Shop in Burbank (1964?). What a talent he was!!!

The exterior shuttlecraft mock up (not to be confused with the interiors set) appeared in five episodes "Gailleo Seven", "Metamorphosis", "Journey to Babel", "The Immunity Syndrome" and "The Way to Eden." The interior set alone was used in various episodes as well: "The Menagerie, Part I" and "The Doomsday Machine."

So that answers the question as to why when the transporter was fubarred and Sulu and the landing party were stranded on the freezing planet below, they didn't just send the shuttlecraft down to bring them back up to the ship. They hadn't built it yet. The full-size exterior model appears in at least one other episode I can recall that you didn't mention: Way To Eden when the space hippies steal it and take it down to the planet below. Interestingly enough, one of the space hippies was played by the same actress who plays the Yeoman aboard the shuttlecraft in Galileo 7.

As a 10-year-old seeing the Galileo 7 when it was televised in the 60’s, I thought it looked like a cheap and boxy prop. In 2024 I am amazed with what the designers and builders created under real world constraints. Ironically, NASA’s space shuttle was also chunky and boxy, but then form follows function. Fantasy spaceships today are fussy and dirty, but the beauty of the enterprise never seems to fade.

In 2016, after almost two years of extensive research and meticulous conservation, USS Enterprise NCC-1701 studio model from the television show Star Trek, went on display in the Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall. The studio model was used for filming the original Star Trek television series, which aired from 1966 to 1969. The Museum’s goal was to stabilize the model, document its history of changes, and return it to the appearance it had during the August 1967 filming of the episode “The Trouble with Tribbles,” which marked the last known modification of the model during Star Trek’s production. The original studio model of the Starship Enterprise used in the television series "Star Trek" came to the Smithsonian Institution thirty-five years ago, donated by Paramount Studios in 1974. When the television show ended in 1969, the starship had been crated and stored at the studios. Over time, heat, cold, humidity and other elements had taken a toll on the structure, the wiring and other internal components as well as the exterior paint scheme. Before it could be put on exhibit, extensive restoration was required.

I would love to know whatever happened to the, "Space Pod" from Lost in Space. It may still exist, in someone's private hands. Some 35 years ago, I remember driving to San Diego from LA, and off of the highway atop a 4 story building, I saw the, "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea" yellow diving bell on the roof of this building. I immediately got off the highway, and went into this dive shop that was on street level, and asked about it. Seeing it was one huge surprise.

That's a very cool story. I know the filming miniature of the space pod still exists, and I actually know who owns it. As far as the exterior and interior of the space pod, the full size one? That's a good question I'll see what I can find out :-) Dan

@@MoviesMusicMonsters Great that you're going to do that! The last filmed tv show I ever saw the Lost in Space space pod in was in an episode of the ABC tv show, "Land of the Giants" second season. Also, regarding, "Land Of The Giants" I do suspect that the, "Spindrift" airline space ship was originally intended as a full sized Flying Sub, intended for the, "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea" tv show's 5th season. But, when VTTBOS was canceled, it went to LOTG. Irwin Allen Productions was known for set re-uses to other productions.

It's really hard to see the value in restoring a retro spacecraft that was so obviously hamstrung by budget constraints in both its design and construction but you have somehow made this a great watch regardless. For me the real holy grail from this time period was the astonishing prophetic and beautiful Orion Space Clipper from 2001 a Space Odyssey which in some respects looks more contemporary now than the real life Space Shuttle that came along decades later. So Dan, maybe you can chase this one down for a future video!

I wish I could remember the date and more details, but sometime in the late 80's the company I worked for was selling Hollywood various products for set and prop designs. Primarily we sold them decorative aluminum trims and moldings, along with some aluminum pipe and pipe fittings for railings. I was traveling with one of my salespeople and we made a call to the Paramount lot to met with some of the set design people. They took us into a building and there was the Galileo Shuttle Craft! I can't confirm say for sure it was actually the prop detailed in this video, but I don't know how it could have been anything else. We were told it was the original Shuttle Craft from Star Trek, and they were working on restoring it and upgrading it for the new Star Trek Next Generation series, which was filming at the time, and I think in it's second or third season. It was the right size and was painted just like the Galileo in this video. We were allowed to climb inside and were shown where some of our aluminum trim was supposed to be used. I don't know if that ever happened, but I thought it was very cool at the time being a fan of the original show and the new one. What was really cool after that was they wanted to take us onto a sound stage where they were filming a new episode. Unfortunately for us, the red lights were flashing meaning the doors to the stage were locked and could not be opened during filming. We waited around for a while, but the guys had to leave. However, they left us there and we were told we could wonder around, but just don't go into any buildings on our own. We were standing there at the corner of the building and all of the sudden the door opened and three Klingon's came walking out right in front of us! They were taking a smoke break, and all three lit-up. These guys were all geared up in full costumes and makeup. I could swear one of them was character "Gowron", but can't confirm. It was amazing! Somehow they mistook us for company executives and came right over to talk with us. I remember being shocked that up close the costumes were so cheap looking . The large buttons or other types of studs were made of wood and silver spray painted. It was an obvious rattle-can job, as the paint was very light, uneven, and the wood was showing through on everything. You would never notice it watching the show as they never had a closeup shot which might show it. They talked and joked around with us for 5-10 minutes, finished their cigarettes and went back in. I remember one of them left us with the parting quote "Die Well"!

The menagerie part 1 used the stage set and the miniature, the way to eden featured the full sized prop in a landed on the planet set,and did not feature the stage set or the miniature. By the way from multiple sources the full sized prop was actually closer to around 3/4 of full size,notice that whenever the actors either enter or exit they had to bend over,while the stage set had ample headroom.Looking forward to your video on the 11 ft Enterprise as well!

Great video and subject to cover. The Galileo shuttlecraft is certainly an iconic sci-fi vehicle. It’s heartening to see the original restored and on display for fans and others to appreciate. The shuttlecraft would make a great vehicle/chassis for a VR amusement experience I would think. It could transition guests from an outdoor Earth environment at “launch” and transition physically into an adjacent warehouse housing an alien world set and back. Or why not a flight-simulator in a full-size mock-up? The models and props from Disney’s Black Hole would also make interesting subjects of a video. The Cygnus was amazing; like a cathedral in space. Thanks again for a fun flight down Memory Lane. See you “Out There”!

Missed out on are the details of those who obtained the full scale prop. After The Braille Institute in Los Angeles's brief time, it was actually kept for a number of years Roger Hiseman of Palos Verdes, who kept it in front of his home and allowed people to visit it, even when its condition deteriorated. There's a fair collection of photos online you can find of fans cosplaying in TOS uniforms and even with prop phasers, communicators, and tricorders on it! Roger's neighbors complained when the prop decayed to the point that it was an eyesore and so he moved it to storage lot where it sat, slowly falling apart since it was never intended to be exposed to the elements for very long. It was bought from him and shipped to San Diego to another storage lot in 1985, and then given a partial restoration, but then allowed to rot again outdoors. Lynne Miller managed to obtain it for $3000, moving it to Ohio, and then doing a more extensive restoration (possibly saving it in the process!), and it was exhibited for a short time. But by 1993, restoration stopped due to a dispute, and then the hanger where it was been kept out of the elements was demolished, forcing the prop's move and back to the elements once more, where it sat until 2012.

Hollywood has always had NO REGARD for future historical atrifacts. Just make, film, and repurpose. Or destroy. Thank the maker there are fans and historians that collected them and rescued them.

I heard that Vic Mignogna, creator of Star Trek Continues, went to the Space Center I think. Took along a green screen setup and filmed some footage for one of the episodes (Fairest of Them All). This was a great video. Thanks

Great video! Just to add, the shuttle is just called the Galileo. The episode is called The Galileo Seven in reference to its seven passengers. The episode title was a homage to the film Five Came Home. The shuttle's number being 1701/7 is a coincidence. Note in later episodes it is renamed Galileo II on the hull as the original Galileo did not survive the Galileo Seven episode.

Last I heard was that the refurbished original Galileo was at Ticonderoga, NY in 2022.

That is correct, I found that out after posting the video, but I did add some closed captioning text at that point to explain to people where it actually is today.

What happened to the Proteus submarine from Fantastic Voyage?
@eg395
@eg395 3 месяца назад
Glad you brought up the Proteus. Here in Chicago, we have a Museum of Science and Industry. We went to visit the museum one afternoon and the museum had on display some Hollywood props. Yes, a miniature of the Proteus was there with a full interior and crew. One crew man had a newspaper in his hands. The miniature itself measured about 3-4 feet in length and it was in a display case. I was happy to see it.

I hit the 👍 even though you have it turned off. Seems like you have another 1k subs with each vid I view! WTG & TYVM! I've been a Star Trek fan my whole life, but the Trekkiest thing I guess I've done was the Experience in Las Vegas lol

70000 for basically a steel frame. Then replacing everything else and ending up with a Shuttlecraft that is not in anyway visually original. Would have been cheaper to build one from scratch.
