personally, if texas were to become independent its borders in this timeline would not be along the Rio grande but rather the ones it originally had. and if ur saying Brittain would allow it to exist as a buffer then that even more of an incentive to keep those borders as Mexico would be more willing to deal with result, also I dought that scenario would occur because might be stronger in this timeline and gone a different seeing as the colonies took up a parliamentary govt so would Mexico with its own emperor as there no successful American republic to stand as an example of successful governance for republican parties in Mexico and I doubt Iturbe would make the same mistake Santa anna did. also, you cant compare the Boer conflict to this because Mexicans also had guns while the Xhosa and the Kiokwio did not. most likely those southerners would move somewhere in Louisiana that is if it wasn't given back to Spain after the Napoleonic wars.

I highly doubt any Colonist outside of Maryland would've taken up arms to support Charles I considering they suspected him of secretly being a Catholic. A lot of the Colonists left England because they considered the Protestant Church of England to still have been "too Catholic" for their personal tastes. And that's not just the Colonists from New England. Had the Stuarts fled to anywhere in the Empire, Cromwell would've personally hunted them down and smited them.

The US revolution succeeded in large part because of military assistance from France (and Prussia, whose troops came over on French naval vessels). In short, if King Louie hadn't wanted to screw over the Brits, it could well have failed. The French were instrumental in the victory at Yorktown in 1781, which effectively granted America independence. But by 1789, France was highly unstable and entering its own revolution. Louie was guillotined in 1793. If this period of instability in France had begun 10 years earlier, France would have been in no position to contribute to American independence (and the Prussians would have had no way to get here). Without help, the colonists would have likely been unable to kick the British out. Manhattan and Long Island were impregnable to the colonists due to the British navy, which the colonists had no way to challenge. With these forward bases, they could remain safely indefinitely until the colonists decided that a compromise was needed.

Thank you for giving Louis the credit he deserves for helping America it’s not often I see people acknowledge the role he and other foreign powers played in the war. Standing back and waiting until your friends are nearly destroyed before finally throwing your weight behind them isn't good business etc, it's cowardice. Obviously, after doing that - the USA was able to fill the void left by the collapse of the European Empires because we'd spent every penny we had, borrowed billions from you and switched our entire industry towards war production.

First, America would need the manpower, naval power, and needs to find away to keep supplies moving. Second, there needs to be a reason why America would invade Spain it self. Third, where in Spain could America land troops? America's Navy was more powerful then the Spainsh Navy, So no problems there. America's Army would be battle hardened after the campaign in Cuba. But Spain is more rugged terrain, and is larger then Cuba. Not to mention that the U.S. Army was still using the Krag-Jørasion Rilfes, while Spain used the superior Mauser Rilfes. (Got to hand it to the Germans, they make some top quality Rilfes. If only they can just win one World war they would be in business.) Now Supplying the U.S. Army is a total nightmare for any logistics guy. Spain is on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, and keeping Supplies flowing would be a nightmare for anyone planning on invasion America, or vice versa. (There is the unpredictable weather, hurricane season, and of course the timing when supplies are suppose to come, and go.) Assuming that U.S. Strategists solve all of those problems. Then why are we there to begin with? Sure America is at War. But Cuba, and Philippines are less guarded, and I bet the Spainsh People wouldn't be to happy to see Americans coming in, and 'occupy' there Houses, and Homes. Third, Where is America going to land it's troops? A port on the Atlantic side would work, but it would have to be in the north of Spain. There are lots of Mountains, and a good place to hold a single, or multiple ports. But who knows? The France during Napoleon's time tryed, and failed spectacularly. And they had to deal with the Mountains. Not an ocean. All things considered, Napoleon had less of a problem when invading Spain. But the U.S. have an ocean to cross, land troops, and some how keep those troops supplied. It's highly unlikely. But it would make a great scenario.

The South breeding pioneers and soldiers is thanks in large part to the heavy population of Scots-Irish (Ulster Scots) who settled the region. They got their pioneer spirit from over a century of living in Northern Ireland and thus being on the frontline of the wars with the Catholic Irish. When they started moving to America in droves in the 1740s, those that settled in the tightly packed North mostly assimilated into its English culture. However, those who settled in the spread out, agrarian South kept the fighting, pioneering spirit that allowed them to survive in Northern Ireland and passed it on to succeeding generations.
@benjamingrist6539
@benjamingrist6539 4 года назад
@bbonner422 I never said they didn't have a right to defend themselves. However, I do think Irish Republicans tend to view the Ulster Scots with a lot of undue disdain. (Please note, everything said in this comment is coming from the perspective of an American who is about 8 generations removed from Ireland.) The vast majority of atrocity committed against the Irish have always been from the English, not the Scots. Ulster was very sparsely populated by the time the plantations started, due mostly to the English invasion led by Cromwell and an ensuing plague that swept the island. From the perspective of the lowland Scots, Ulster was a land that was virtually free of inhabitants where they could have farms much larger than what they had across the sea. Not to mention that the crown had been actively suppressing the culture of much of the lowlands, so Ulster offered them an opportunity to continue their way of life. Did not these Celts have just as much a right to seek a better life for themselves and their families as did the Irish? The native Irish also went too far with their actions trying to retake their homeland, far past mere self-defense. In the Williamite Wars, there were numerous reports of Irish bashing in the skulls of Protestant babies and torturing people to death. In more recent memory, the IRA frequently attacked civilian targets instead of focusing solely on military installations. However, I'm sure you can name a long list of atrocities the Ulster Scots have committed over the last 400 years. Thus, both the Catholic Irish and the Ulster Scots started with good intentions but committed heinous acts in pursuit of them. As for Ireland being united in the next decade due to the recent election results, Sinn Fein has policies that will lead to Ireland not being ruled by the shamrock but by the crescent moon. Meanwhile, the UK is taking steps to prevent this from happening in their country. By the end of the decade, we may see the Republicans and Unionists in Ulster united against an invasion from an Ireland now controlled by an evil empire that destroyed the culture of the Republic's previous inhabitants who were so foolish to invite in their new overlords with open arms.
@PaulfromChicago

? The South didn't have militias and more soldiers per capita because they were Scotch Irish. They had these militias to defend against slave uprisings. As the song says, the idea of a slave uprising struck terror into the Southerners. So they constantly drilled the militia, knowing that their evil practices might catch up to them eventually. Santo Domingo terrified them and they responded accordingly.
@benjamingrist6539
@benjamingrist6539 4 года назад
@@PaulfromChicago that doesn't explain why there was a pioneering spirit among Southerners that led them to push ever westward. It also doesn't explain why they had their martial character before the Haitian revolution and long after slavery was ended, or why areas that had few slaves (such as Southern Appalachia) had just as if not more fierce a martial culture as the areas with large slave populations. I think the Scots-Irish explanation makes much more sense, particularly when you realize that most of the Northern soldiers in early America were Scots-Irish (the units of the Continental Line from Pennsylvania were almost 90% Scots-Irish) and most famous military leaders that came out of the North were of Scots-Irish stock (Ulysses S. The real cause for the American Revolution was that the British Crown limited the territorial expansion of the English provinces in America establishing an Indian Territory which was closed. So, Americans (name adopted by the English in the new Continent) wanted to continue Western colonization without those limits established by the British Government. So it was after the Revolution and that led to the expansion of "America" at the expense of Indian tribes. Americans made America great...

I believe that the United Kingdom would loathe to admit American representatives into Parliament, perhaps not enough to avoid doing so in some negotiated end to the war had the British broke the Continental Army early. However, American representation in the contemporary British parliament would only expose them to the reality of the system, the beliefs of the Englishmen who would refuse to see them as anything but subjects, and ultimately only be a failed experiment across the Atlantic that bred resentment on both sides. I doubt they would be welcomed by more than a handful of sympathizers in the House of Commons, and the more direct experience of the House of Lords at that time would’ve been very negative to the beliefs and values shaped around the lead up to the revolution. Perhaps another revolt would end up in near-independent dominion status, but even that would be shaky and I believe any sort of compromise between the two sides would be very unstable and a race against time to somehow genuinely cement relations between them. The more trouble that arose in some timeline where a brief compromise is made avoiding complete independence would just strengthen the positions of those who viewed the colonies as unnecessary burdens who were too troublesome to effectively rule, especially since I think the patriot movement as a whole would have never have truly dissipated and instead continued a small scale guerrilla war that only brought more and more stationed British troops and sapped Loyalist feelings.

I’m from Rotherham Yorkshire in the North of England and have spent lockdown researching a little book on our local Patriots who struggled for American Liberty. The Patriot movement started as a branch of the English Whig Party in 1725. They sought to increase the franchise, end corruption, end slavery, were anti-monarchy and dreamed of a United Nations of Democratic Countries. They were opposed by the Tory Party. This conflict between Whigs and Tories spread to the colonies. America was seen as low hanging fruit with it’s population being more Whig than Tory. Rotherham Yorkshire was at the epicentre of Whiggish activity. In 1771 Benjamin Franklin visited Rotherham. In 1775 Rotherham resident the Earl of Effingham built a monument to celebrate the Boston Tea Party. Called Boston Castle it still dominates the town from a hilltop. English Whigs began to gain ground in Parliament, by 1781 Rotherham’s Whig Marquess of Rockingham was invited to become Prime Minister. He agreed but on the condition that he be allowed to set America free! This was just after the defeat at Yorktown. The Tories were planning to send more troops. But the moment Rockingham came to power he stopped the fighting against the colonies, but continued the war against France, Spain and Holland. Following the peace treaties of 1783 a huge Victory Arch was built at Parlington Hall Yorkshire to celebrate American Liberty (google it). There was no way that a Whig British Government would try to hang on to the 13 colonies. They believed that trade with a free and friendly America was the way to fix the economy. So they offered America even better terms than the French were demanding. This had the effect of cutting the Americans away from the French and that trade started immediately.

"Counterfactual history, the game of “what if,” is an intellectually hazardous exercise. No one can really explain what didn’t actually happen. And in any case, why bother? Maybe the Persians could have beaten the ancient Greeks; maybe Columbus could have taken a wrong turn and been lost at sea; maybe the first atomic bomb could have been a dud and convinced everyone to go back to the drawing board. But the Persians did lose, Columbus did make it across the Atlantic, and the Trinity test did light the sky with nuclear fire. It would take a lifetime to imagine the alternatives, none of which are real. The reason we even think about these alternate possibilities, however, is to prevent us from making the mistake of believing in inevitability. The inability to see alternatives leads to lazy strategic thinking, which is why so many programs-including the department I once chaired at the Naval War College, Strategy and Policy-use counterfactual history. Otherwise, we risk failures of strategic imagination. I will never forget, for example, the military student I had many years ago who insisted that the American victory in the War of Independence was inevitable. What would it even look like, he sputtered, if North America had stayed British? There was a long silence in the room until one of his classmates quietly suggested the alternative with two words: 'Like Canada?'" --- Tom Nicols, "Five ways the Soviet Union could had won the Cold War". To be fair about your atomic bomb question you have to consider the facts of the situation. Before “the bomb “ dropped its technology was tested and proven effective ….. And point in fact “the bomb was actually at least THREE bombs , one dropped on Hiroshima, a second dropped at Nagasaki , and at least one other whose target to this day is in some dispute, that third bomb (or maybe material and parts for more) was dismantled and its core used in haphazard experiments back in the states leading to the deaths of a number of top scientists in the field Had the Hiroshima bomb failed to detonate only a handful of people would have even known about it, and within that small group was an even smaller group that would decide whether or not to try again with bombs 2 and 3 …. At that point the Allied military had little concern about resistance to aerial bombardment so they had plenty of time to tinker and get it right. After all, what if Hiroshima WASN’T the site of the first nuclear bomb? If three day prior another plane carrying not fat man or little boy but instead held “average Joe” was flown over Mayazaki Japan but the bomb failed to ignite and broke apart upon inpact or fell into the ocean , would we ever find out about it?

The Status Quo was concerned with establishing themselves as new arustocracy in the south. The Southern states were among the hardest to convince to sign the Declaration of Independence and saw the highest rates of Tory activity during the war. There's a reason the Revolution started in the North. The only reason I can see you saying that is based off of the anti federalist movement during the creation of the constitution.

Great Britain was fighting three powerful countries and in the end in 1782, four years after the war began, they gave up and declared a truce with America. They started withdrawing all their soldiers from America including South Carolina and New Jersey. However, in the process of gaining independence, there were several battles fought almost in all the states of the US. Britain did not have a large expeditionary force at that time in America The problem Britain had of they had continued to fight on was the time it would take to send military from other parts of the world who were also engaged In other conflicts.

Really up to that point the colonies had not been paying the actual amount due since their creation, which is why it got rich so quickly. The reason the crown allowed it was because the Brits were making MASSIVE amounts of money, which fueled the empire's expansion. When the Brits asked for more the colonists were basically like, "WTF I thought we had a good thing going." Which then led to everything else.

One other scenario would be the one from "For want of a nail" by Robert Sobel where the British won at Saratoga resulting in France and Spain refusing to support the Americans and thus Britain winning the war by a compromise in 1778 or 1779 where America (with Quebec/Canada) becoming the "Confederation of North America" as a more autonomous part of the British Empire. Also in the book the remnants of the revolution flee to Texas to form the nation of Jefferson before conquering Mexico and creating the "United States of Mexico" I didn't know of the Dominion of New England or that the British Prime Minister was removed by a vote of non-confidence or that George III almost abdicated

I think the Northeastern and Central US would eventually have joined present-day Canada as a British federal dominion with a parliamentary system of government under the Crown and would have remained a monarchy until today. I think, however, that something like the Confederacy would have emerged as a separate independent republic over the abolition of slavery by the British Parliament in 1832. The independent southern United States would have occupied then the American Southwest following something similar to the Mexican-American war.

This is a remarkably blinkered view of America, especially the South and its allegedly more democratic tradition. Provinces like South Carolina had a majority black population for centuries, but NO Blacks or Indians in the government, legislature or judiciary. There may have been some sympathy in their homeland for the "freedom-loving Englishmen" in the colonies, but there was awareness too of the extent of slavery and genocide. Americans overstate how acceptable the principle of slavery was in the 17th and 18th centuries: really only to those who benefitted personally, (which included many of the rich). America itself was an outlier. Would slavery really have been abolished early in the 19th century? It was the principal reason for the empty rhetoric of the declaration of independence and the US constitution, which were carefully crafted to allow it through the loopholes. Slavery would also have got in the way of the "innovative" and "enterprising" men of the South: the availability of slave labour is often given as the reason why the Greeks and Romans never developed steam power, or many of the other modern inventions for which their intellectuals had given them the first ideas. Americans also forget that the only reason for the secession of the Republic of Texas was the abolition of slavery in Mexico (by Vicente Guerrero, its first black president), which was not to the liking of the illegal English-speaking immigrants in the North. What they fought for was certainly not "freedom."
