I don't understand the shape of the field. What shape do you call it? What are the dimensions? It seems it would be difficult to play in public as its such a big field and needs so many players. i don't get it

@@nofurtherwest3474 It's an oval, but pretty close to a circle. Dimensions differ slightly between different stadiums, but close enough. The same fields are used for cricket, so there's plenty of appropriate fields around the world. Yes it's a lot of players, but they're not all involved at the same time, they all have their own roles.

I'm biased being Aussie but totally agree. Imo the barriers to international growth is the physicality and complicated rules. Many outside of Australia are likely intimidated by the sheer level of tackles, bumping, etc. without much protection. Also, as someone who's followed the game for years and love it, I still dunno what holding the ball and prior opportunity is

I'm from Estonia and I played footy since was 2 years old, in the snow! and on a frozen lake too!

Well, there is Inter Rules or "International Rules", but it's a mix of two sports: Gaelic Football (Irish) and Australian Football (some of what you have just witnessed). There's an annual two tests of Inter Rules against Ireland and Australia where they compete to win the Cup. I don't watch it, but it's certainly out there. The few huge differences in the sport, however, is; One, they play on a rectangular field, instead of an oval. This is a Gaelic Trait. Two, they use a round-ball, but can still handpass, kick, and even bounce like we Aussies do with our Sherrin (the ball in Australian Rules). And three, probably the biggest difference is that they have 3 ways of scoring (that I know of). One way is to kick the ball into a soccer-like net, the other is to kick the ball over a bar that hangs over the net, and the last way is to kick it between two poles guarding the barred/net like a behind in Aussie Rules. I don't know where you can watch it on TV so it may be worth googling. :)

There is less than 13 minutes of actual game play in a college pro US football game of you time all plays from the time the ball is hiked and the whistle blows the play dead. So it takes 3+ hours to complete 13 minutes of actual game play.

However South Fremantle and East Fremantle were the two most successful Perth teams in the days before a national competition. Carlton, Collingwood, Richmond, Essendon and Hawthorn are some of the biggest and most historical clubs

Its one of the best sports to watch if you find most sports boring to watch. Thats why this has so many fans that would never watch anything else.

Rich lo .Its a good sport,but the environmental and cultural conditions help as well.Its based around a city of 5million which means its easy to get to matches.The ten victorian teams share three huge stadiums.As well as that the pitch is huge making it less ideal for tv and more conducive to going to matches.

NRL is only played in New South Wales and Queensland, yet AFL still has a huge following in New South Wales. In other words, NRL is dying and was recently surpassed by soccer in attendance stats.

I just started watching it today, it looks like a much more exciting version of punting. If I was an nfl scout, I'd be looking at these guys for a punter. They are trained in punting accuracy. Plus not afraid to put a lick on someone if the returner breaks one, and know how to move around to avoid a blocked punt and quick reaction.

@@thecensoredmuscle563 agreed. I've definitely noticed a big wave of Aussie punters in NCAA football and some of these guys are fairly dynamic and can do those extra little things to get a punt off or put some creative spin/wobble on the ball.
