Being recently diagnosed with Quiet BPD I've been trying to find out how I can use DBT to help myself. This is now like the 8th video I've seen on DBT that only repeats general, vague, nonsubstantive platitudes. Has anyone actually read a book or seen a video or visited a website that tells you what, specifically DBT consists of? What are its principles? What are its tools? What are its methods? I mean, the title of this video is "What is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy"? Well, I've watched it twice and I still have no idea. "Some people have BPD. DBT can help." Great, BUT WHAT *IS* DBT?

Imagine you have a box of crayons, and each crayon represents a feeling you have. Sometimes, you might have really strong or big feelings, like being very sad, angry, or scared. DBT helps you learn how to use your crayons in the right way. DBT has four important parts, like four superpowers you can learn: Mindfulness: This is like having a special power to focus and pay attention to what's happening right now. It helps you notice and understand your feelings and thoughts without getting overwhelmed by them. Calming down: When you feel upset, it's important to have ways to calm down. DBT teaches you different tricks like deep breathing, counting to ten, or using your senses to help you relax and feel better. Solving problems: Sometimes, you might have problems or things that make you feel bad. DBT helps you become a problem-solving superhero by teaching you how to think of different solutions and make good choices. Getting along with others: Having good relationships with family and friends is important. DBT shows you how to talk to others and ask for what you need in a nice way. It helps you understand other people's feelings too. With these superpowers, you can become stronger and happier. Just like learning how to ride a bike or draw better, DBT helps you practice these skills so you can use them in your everyday life

Hi Stepfanie! I hope you're doing well (: So basically, dialectical behavior therapy (or DBT) was developed by Dr. Marsha M. Linehan specifically to treat patients with borderline personality disorder (or BPD) because they seldom made progress with other types of therapy, like cognitive behavior therapy, and continued to live in intense emotional pain and engage in dangerous behaviors. Essentially, while therapies like CBT focus on thought processes, DBT focuses on emotional intensity and reactivity. There are four modules to DBT: - Mindfulness (simply noticing your emotions without judgement or impulsively acting on them) - Distress Tolerance (developing healthy coping skills in order to positively endure negative emotions) - Emotion regulation (developing skills to lessen negative emotions and increase positive ones) - Interpersonal effectiveness (developing skills to better interact with people, especially through compromise and prioritizing) In adolescent programs, a fifth module is often added: "walking the middle path" (learning accept multiple truths at the same time and not seeing things in black and white- for example, rather than "I am a bad person," you can think "I am a good person, and I can improve.") There is a surplus of empirical evidence that DBT works to drastically improve quality of life and reduce dangerous behaviors, and it even helps many people achieve remission from BPD (as in they no longer meet the diagnostic criteria), and I can attest to that. I'm seventeen years old (BPD symptoms onset at age eleven, diagnosed at age sixteen), and, while I haven't started a formal DBT program yet, I've recently started to apply the DBT skills just from the free resources I've found online, and less than a week since I've started applying those, I can say that I have not felt this sustainably joyful and peaceful in years (and it's not like medication where there's a honeymoon phase- I can use these skills as often and as long as I need to). On that note, since you mention medication, I wanted to say that while medication management can be used as part of a DBT program, it isn't always necessary, as many people are able to come off of medication when starting DBT. In fact, there's no FDA-approved medication specifically for BPD, medication is just used to treat specific symptoms (for example, I take an antidepressant for the depressive symptoms, as well as an antipsychotic for irritability and two mood stabilizers for frequent and intense mood swings). I hope this was helpful. I wish you the best of luck!

Hi there! it is a lot like regular therapy, as it is still a form of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), but it is just more specified. The focus on DBT is heavily based on teaching mindfulness, distress torelance and emotional regulation to patients. These strategies help improve patients' negative thinking and appraisal patterns. Other techniques like skills training is involved where therapists simulate and practice real world scenarios where patients can practice applying their strategies learned in therapy. Phone coaching is often utilized in DBT too, where the client has phone access to the therapist in between sessions.

Recognizing dysfunctional behavior patterns, recognizing the possible choices to either: respond, react, or remove yourself from the negative stimulus, and strategies to overcome the toxic situation, (Seek RESTITUTION if victimization is criminal) and lead a productive life is vital ! 👍 Analyzing dysfunctional behaviors either by parents, siblings, peers, or others in the community and how it affects you, can lead to becoming more self aware and increase coping skills.

Substance is not the way my friend! I totally understand as I am a recovering alcoholic all my life I been using that to cope with daily life. The mental health system is broken, I don’t like going to therapy and getting comfortable with a therapist to have them leave shortly after a couple sessions and then I’m on the hunt for a new therapist again. I wished therapist would learn to stick to there job and give people a chance.A lot of people are suffering in this world with emotional and mental health issues substance abuse and have not been diagnosed or diagnosed properly. A good therapist would study there clients rather than just sit there and listen and give you a few lines out of a book they got from graduating their course to be a therapist. For you my friend, I can give some advice and follow the natural supplements for self healing, meditate 🧘‍♂️ give your mind a break and a chance to heal from substance and go to a treatment centre for substance abuse. Most of all never blame yourself for the struggles you face. Be positive in life and grab good opportunity to better yourself. Not because you feel you need it but because it gives us all mental clarity that life can be managed and we have control still. We all have something we suffer with but it’s all up to us to find what works to make life manageable and more enjoyable. Not many people believe in the man upstairs but I also believe pray helps spiritual growth and inner peace, finding the ability to forgive those who have hurt you in your past can help you move forward more gracefully in the future rather than carrying that hurt and nurturing it with substance. Find a way to know and tell yourself you are enough, you are worthy , you are a beautiful person, self care is important. I hope this helps and if you ever need someone to chat with let me know. I’m near for those who struggle just like I do. No one is perfect in this life and those who say or think they are, well they are full of shit. Everyone on this planet is suffering inside with something. You are not alone. Hugs 🤗

Whoever wrote the script for this video should be absolutely fired. The first 97 seconds of this video or a complete waste of time, and then the rest is barely informative. Do some actual research.

I heard this therapy is garbage 🗑from trauma survivors who’ve had to undergo it

To be fair, from what I can tell, this is specifically targeted towards those with emotional instability, and was designed for BPD. If anyone goes into this hoping to undo trauma, it won't help. Also it's not going to work if you don't put in the effort.

I'm 60. I don't qualify as a young person. 😥 the pain is just as intense and ive been dealing with it for decades. Old people cant be helped? 🫤

@jeepingurl I'm sorry you've been dealing with such pain - older adults definitely deal with this as well and can DEFINITELY be helped. I have a more informative video on my channel if you're still looking for better resources. I've been in remission from BPD for over 2 years and make content on BPD, mental health/wellness, and self improvement that you may find helpful.
