4k Blu-ray Dolby vision is outstanding. Used with an oled tv it’s really amazing looking. The only problem is that normal tv looks dull in comparison after watching Dolby vision.

Dolby Vision is an additional layer to HDR10, so if you don't have a Dolby Vision display, the content reverts to the HDR10 layer without dynamic metadata.

I mostly grade my footage using dolby vision and trim it down to sdr from the dolby master and I have to say that no, dolby vision definitely is not necessary unless your tv does less than 1000nits. I honestly dislike dynamic tonemapping but it does save the footage which bad looking tbs

I don't know, it seems that there is too much of a focus on a binary brightness to achieve the greatest shocking effect (some may say contrast). Comparing bright ray of light to extreme darkness isn't the goal when compared to a distinct ray of light and a gradient dark with details. The darkness should be able to show details in the black by the use of color and a spectrum of darkness.

But Filmmaker Mode (moviemaker mode😂) is also coming out so it will rival Dolby Vision I guess. The difference is that Dolby Vision is already here and new TVs with Filmmaker Mode will be very expensive. Where HDR 10+ stand in all this I don’t know but what I do know is those people are just after our money. 😃
@urmasterjohn
@urmasterjohn 4 года назад
Harlock2day it is not a rival to DV, it just turns off all picture processing. It can be used in addition to DV.
@avforums
@avforums 4 года назад
Filmmaker mode has nothing to do with Dolby Vision. Dolby Vision Dark mode is the same as Filmmaker mode in that it switches off image processing and smoothing. All Filmmaker mode does is make sure everything is switched off and you are in the best accurate image mode for SDR and HDR10. You can do the same on any TV by putting it in Cinema or Movie mode and switching off smoothing, noise reduction etc.

I said Dolby Vision was a gimmick from the beginning. HDR is an even bigger gimmick. Marketing teams hype it up with such intense advertising and the clueless consumers convince themselves they can see a difference. Many times it's obvious that the SDR image has been doctored to make the new tech look better by comparison. It's just the electronics conglomerates doing what they always do, taking advantage of the public's pitiful understanding of display technology to sell mass produced junk that's obsolete before you even unbox it. Also, I love how this guy candidly admits that the TVs available to consumers are trash compared to the "professional" units he works with.
