What Is Leaky Gut And How Can You Treat It?

Most of us (including most doctors) do not recognize or know that digestive problems wreak havoc in the entire body, leading to allergies, arthritis, autoimmune disease, rashes, acne, chronic fatigue, mood disorders, autism, dementia, cancer, and more. So having a healthy gut means more than simply being free of annoyances like bloating or heartburn. It is absolutely central to your health. It is connected to everything that happens in your body. That is why Functional Medicine almost always starts helping people treat chronic health problems by fixing their gut.
In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman is joined by Dr. Elizabeth Boham to review two patient cases focused on treating the gut.
Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the functional medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Boham discuss:
What is leaky gut, and why does it lead to so many other health issues, including food sensitivities?
How our diet, food supply, over-reliance on antibiotics, acid blockers, steroids, and more can lead to leaky gut
Using stool testing and Cyrex testing to assess gut health.
The ‘5R’ program (remove, replace, reinoculate, repair, and rebalance) that Functional Medicine uses as a guide to treat chronic issues.
- Remove stressors: get rid of things that negatively affect the environment of the GI tract including allergic foods and parasites or other bad bugs such as bacteria or yeast. This might involve using an allergy “elimination diet” to find out what foods are causing GI symptoms or it may involve taking drugs or herbs to eradicate a particular bug.
- Replace digestive secretions: add back things like digestive enzymes, hydrochloric acid, and bile acids that are required for proper digestion and that may be compromised by diet, drugs, diseases, aging, or other factors.
- Reinoculate. Help beneficial bacteria flourish by ingesting probiotic foods or supplements that contain bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacillus species, and by consuming the high soluble fiber foods or “prebiotics.” Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms found in the gut that are also called “friendly bacteria.” Antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria. Probiotics in the form of supplements or food are needed to re-inoculate the gut. Fermented foods, like yogurt, miso, & tempeh are food sources of probiotics. Prebiotics are nondigestible food ingredients that selectively stimulate the growth of beneficial microorganisms already in the colon. Prebiotics feed probiotics. Prebiotics are available in many foods that contain a fiber called inulin, like artichokes, garlic, leeks, onion, chicory, and tofu. Grains such as barley, flax, oats, & wheat are also good sources of prebiotics.
- Repair. Help the lining of the GI tract repair itself by supplying key nutrients that can often be in short supply in a disease state, such as zinc, antioxidants (e.g. vitamins A, C, and E), fish oil, and the amino acid glutamine.
- Rebalance. Pay attention to lifestyle choices - sleep, exercise and stress can all affect the GI tract.

Leaky Gut may have little or nothing at all to do with our crummy food supply. I developed it from medication I was forced to take over forty years ago. My symptoms were so extreme back then that my local doctor thought I was telling him lies. I couldn't open my hands, straighten my arms and legs, even my jaw wouldn't open and close properly. I was in so much pain and gradually the problems got worse and worse. I couldn't write my name, concentrate on a TV show, or even read a sentence. Every time I touched something the area would swell and become so painful, I had to sit on very soft furniture. I was mentally and physically crippled for thirteen years before I finally saw an immunologist who diagnosed the condition. And I was so grateful after a few days of being put of a diet of meat, white fish, and eggs the whole thing virtually cleared up. You see even the chemicals in vegetables had become toxic to my system. I couldn't eat fruit or spices or herbs, not even nuts or cheeses. I could eat butter and lard and still can. It's now been over forty years and I'm still on the carnivore diet. Occasionally I will make an attempt at green beans or peas with my meal and get away with it but that's all.
@virtuallyme2518
@virtuallyme2518 Год назад
Good lord... the symptoms you described sound terrible... how awful for you to have suffered so much for so long... is there actually a name given to the condition that you had... and on the subject of the carnivore diet... you’re the only person I’ve ever heard of who’s been on it for so long and lived to tell the story ... so much of what I have read suggests that meat is fertiliser for cancer... is the meat that you eat organic ... grain fed... or grass fed... I’d love to know :)

Has anyone had horrible , disgusting,entire body, odor. My biggest problem is that I can’t smell it myself. My family members all deny my odor, which does not help me. I can only smell myself when the air is blowing towards me and behind me at the same time. Then I smell rotten onions, it used to be a dog poop odor but it has changed to rotten onions. My skin breaks out all over. I scrub myself raw every day. But as soon as get warm or hot, or I’m nervous or anxious it starts. I have had continuous diarrhea since 1982 when I went to the Bahamas. Doctors just don’t care, or understand me when I mention I think I have leaky gut some don’t think there is such a thing, or never heard of it. Christine in hot Florida!😢

If you constantly interrupt your guest we may never know the direction that your guest would have taken the conversation. I know you are excited, which is good, however, keep that excitement for when it’s your turn to speak. Often it seems like you are waiting to speak rather than savoring and listening to what your guest has to offer. Because most of the information I find points to yeast grows well in an acidic environment. And when I tried to implement this practically, IT WORKED. I mean I stopped using chilli Peppers and Tamarind(Citrussy) and tomatoes etc which are acidic, and it reduced my bloating etc. Which I belived to be was due to candida Overgrowth. Care to clarify? Thanks

I have noticed the interruption and it is bothersome, however I do realize he is doing it to give his audience more understanding on what the person is saying, he is explaining what they are saying further so that his audience can fully understand. But yes it is bothersome but he’s doing it with good intent for us

If you liked this video, you may also be interested to know that some common mistakes people may make in trying to fix gut health include: adding a probiotic to help with excessive gas and bloating (that's just one piece of the puzzle), eliminating a food for 4 days and expecting it solve the issue (will take at least 2 weeks), and not thinking about root causes!

I was shocked. Need to know how to disipher myself. Been on stations since 37 now 66. Had lots of antibiotics since age 10. Boat load more 1-1/2 yrs ago. Have had no dairy or bread for 1 month. Chocolate calls my name when I'm in the store. Broke down about 3 days ago. No sugar or creamer in my coffee for @ least 1 month. The chocolate is the hardest for me but I will conquer. Thank you doctors for the valuable information. Both of you are awesome! But what should be done with leaky gut? Please list it down. What causes leaky gut besides prolonged use of antibiotic? I managed to avoid antibiotic as far as possible & sometimes, I reduced it on my own in case of sickness like UTS & i focus of flushing it out with drinking plenty of water. Yet, I may be having leaky gut - my metabolism has not been strong.

I wish I knew about leaky gut earlier before my son got type 1 diabetes. There were signs throughout his life - food allergies, IBS, wierd autoimmune responses and recently type 1. I heard about GAPS but didn't pay much attention until now. Hopefully, once we start this diet, we will get his blood sugars stable with insulin as well of course.
@leannshort2211
@leannshort2211 Год назад
Good luck on GAPS! I tried it twice and could only stay on it for 4 months both times! I did the diet by the books and I just couldn’t get enough food. I have food allergies/ sensitivities and asthma due to my leaky gut. On GAPS I got down to 131 Lbs and I’m 5’9. I am now underweight where I really didn’t need to lose any weight at all. I am not digesting my food properly so I’m malnourished and can’t absorb vitamins and minerals. I also decided to stop because I don’t think I’m tolerating the broth well either. 😣 Now I’m definitely going to have to go the 5 R route through my naturopath. Hope I get somewhere soon because this is absolutely miserable! 😭

I twice went on an elimination diet and became very healthy, each diet was 3 years apart and about 15 years ago. I cannot seem to replicate this any more! A very interesting side effect of the diet is that each time I had no hayfever, the only time in my life that I didn't. So... does that suggest that I had more HNMT histamine N-methyltransferase when doing those diets, and that shut down the histamine created by the hay fever? I can't seem to find any test for HNMT histamine N-methyltransferase levels.

I am following the leaky gut protocol...and already seeing some helpful results. I have been recently diagnosed with Collagenous Colitis. I believe that this is one of many autoimmune issues I have been diagnosed with over the years and it's time to get to the root of it. Is there any chance that the healing I will get through treating my leaky gut with diet will also cure my colitis or will it always be present and diet will always need to be managed carefully. Thanks so much for this wonderful video :)

I often read comments from people who are suffering ... who ask for advice and never get answers... it’s so upsetting that these doctors can’t take a few minutes to contribute to somebody’s well-being... I get that they’re doing a good thing by sharing information and knowledge thru RU-vid ... but essentially, the fact that they’re not answering questions and trying to help the occasional person pro bono ... clearly shows that these videos aren’t made with any kind of humanitarian intent... but merely to make money from people suffering (which sums up the entire medical industry to a “T”) ... these days you can’t even get in to see Dr Hyman... if you cld... his consultations often equate to thousands of dollars. Anyway... I hope you’re doing better... and have found a good doctor who’s been able to help you... :)
