Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage that’s approved by the federal government but provided through private insurance companies. It is offered to everyone who qualifies for Medicare and can be added as a stand-alone plan that covers prescriptions only, or as part of a Medicare Advantage plan. Either way, there may be a monthly cost associated with Medicare Part D.
It’s recommended that you sign up for Medicare Part D when you first become eligible for it so that you can avoid late enrollment penalties. These penalty costs increase the longer you wait and last as long as you have coverage.
Even though all Medicare Part D plans are approved by the federal government, there are slight differences in the way each insurance company covers prescriptions. Make sure to find out how the prescriptions you use will be covered through your plan.
