“So efficient and hushed are our brains in their day to day operations, we are apt to miss what an extraordinary and complicated achievement it is to feel mentally well. A mind in a healthy state is, in the background, continually performing a near-miraculous set of manoeuvres that underpin our moods of clear-sightedness and purpose. To appreciate what mental health might be (and therefore what its opposite involves), we might take a moment to consider some of what will be going on in the folds of an optimally-functioning mind...”

I think something that really affects people's mental health nowadays is hustle culture and toxic productivity. It's important to not be lazy and accomplish your goals but this idea of going on 4 hours of sleep and working every living moment is not good for your physical or mental health.
@newromantics2254
@newromantics2254 3 года назад
Agree, the idea of overworking to achieve your goals has been normalized to the point that if you don't do it you're lazy and unproductive. I'm 18 and I was talking with my parents about this, I told them that the gen z it's noticing that it's really sad that thanks to capitalism, people are forced to work long shifts to earn enough money to make ends meet, and that they often ignore their mental health and their happiness because of this. They just told me that the gen z it's the "glass generation" because we don't want to work. This makes me mad, it's obvious that we need to work hard, nothing in life is easy. But we need to take care of ourselves, and working for more than 10 hours is not healthy for anyone.
@_SomyaY
@_SomyaY 3 года назад
@@newromantics2254 yup true, and really what is the purpose of us living? If it's not to make the best of a moment, to make bonds, form relationships, have fun, what is then having the time of our lives? Living is the point of living. Only by living can we learn about living.

I agree. I was living that life before I got arrested and sent to prison for 20 months (I consider that a 20 month vacation - granted minus the comforts that come w/ a vacation since I was in a SHU for most of my incarceration). But now I actually see what went wrong and how to move forward.

And also what about those communists that constantly pester us about global problems like poverty in Africa, injustice, ecology and abuse of some strangers that we never met? "People don't worry about this" and "people don't worry about them" and "I want you to panic" and "I want the society to start thinking about some". They just want us to worry even more, and not to be productive solving our own tasks, but rather lament about tasks that we cannot solve at all. What, you worked hard and achieved something? Oh, please, you're just a happy white american, what do you know? Let us show you some cruel stories about people with Kalashnikov rifles riding in the jungles to raid a couple of villages and enslave their children.

Your idea of "real help" might not be the help you are seeking. Only you can ultimately help yourself, if you choose to go down the path of helping yourself, it's expensive because you are paying with time and not money. The best investment one can make, is in yourself, remember we change literally everyday and you decide what reality you create for yourself.

What is Mental Health? A thing I wish I and I think others couldve learned about and understood much earlier in life instead of later. But then again that’s in the past and it’s important to focus on the now and whateve current mental health issues many are facing. Another jaded definition of Mental Health for me is that thing that’s negatively associated with bad stuff because many underestimate just how important it really is and see mental health issues either as something unimportant or nonsense.

@mikkoseppala2560
@mikkoseppala2560 3 года назад
The most crucial problem my mind has is comparing. I really do not compare myself to people who are more successful, funnier, prettier etc. I compare myself and my life to people, who in my mind have things in their life worse than me. And it makes me sad and angry to myself that I can’t be satisfied with my life when there is so many people that have much more challenging life than me.
@synsynsy
@synsynsy 3 года назад
Trick is to name the mind. When a thought comes and enters awareness you label it "comparing mind", when an emotion enters the body you label it, like "sadness emotion", "doubt emotion", etc. You say it's name! If you do this, they will not have you in their grip. And when the time to act comes, your judgement won't be colored by them.

Life can be a struggle at times even for those who don’t suffer from debilitating mental illness. For me, the biggest take-away from this piece is that mental health must not be stigmatized and we should all have the same sympathy for the mentally ill as we do for those that suffer physical ailments. But, beyond sympathy and general supportiveness what more can we do to help and how to know if/when tough love would be more beneficial than tea and sympathy? In my experience, depressed people often have self-destructive habits that are easy for others to see but hard to talk about with the affilicted.

One of my greatest mental health problems is loneliness. I have great people that I can call friends, but I don’t know if they are friends. I’m working on my communication skills, but most of the time when I talk about my emotions, I’m not being heard, and that’s why I stick to small talk, but it’s boring and at the end I don’t feel any connection to them. Is it me who is boring? This happens to me almost every time, except when I ask about others life. It sucks having to listen to people but not having the space to express myself.

The las point about treating mental health in a similar way to phisical health couldn´t be more true. Is incredible how many people don´t even consider seeking profesional help for mental issues while finding pretty ordinary doing so for phisical ones.

I was just above to give up. Watching this helped me activate my inner sieve/ censor (how close that word is to sensor). I let go off some of the more extreme thoughts and fears, and actually emailed two people to address two work things I also was hiding from while spiralling. Got replies almost immediately and things are not as bad and I have time to work things out. If something about this video had not spoken to me just this minute, I think I would have been spiralling for weeks, broken up with my partner, quit on work and other more despairing things. I'd say I just got 'algorithmed' some amazingly good luck tonight!

If you found this helpful, you may also want to know that nutrition issues can result in anxiety. For example, magnesium deficiency can be a problem. This deficiency may result from our soils being depleted of magnesium, the increased amount of magnesium used by the body during stress, medications like birth control, and not eating enough magnesium. One good food source of magnesium (and delicious) is pumpkin seeds!

Mental health, defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is "a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community".[1] According to the WHO, mental health includes "subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, intergenerational dependence, and self-actualization of one's intellectual and emotional potential, among others".[2] From the perspectives of positive psychology or of holism, mental health may include an individual's ability to enjoy life and to create a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience.[3] Cultural differences, subjective assessments, and competing professional theories all affect how one defines "mental health

Here is a fun fact: there is a rapper in the world who doesn't swear! NF ( Nathan Feuerstein ) is my favourite rapper and I deeply admire him as a human being too. Just check out the songs " The Search" and " Just like you", then you will know what I mean. He suffered greatly from mental health issues, but he has an incredible gift for putting all his troubles into his music and helping millions of people. There were teenagers coming up to him after his shows, saying: " I was going to commit suicide, but your music saved me". One of his many verses that really got to me is: "I always put up my guard Even when talkin' to God" Those of us who lack a " basic trust" towards the world like this, who are deeply damaged, hyper anxious and only feel truly safe when we are alone, should take special care of our mental health. Here are some podcasts that are very helpful and enriching. ( I have shared some of this here before ) 1. THE HAPPINESS LAB The most beloved psychology professor at Yale University, Laurie Santos is the host of this wonderful podcast. . After seeing that a huge amount of the students were suffering from depression and anxiety, she decided to offer a class called " The science of happiness" and it soon became the most visited class at Yale. On her podcasts, she shares all the insights she offers her students on those lectures. I particularly recommend the episode:" Don't accentuate the positive". ( There is hope in there too,you will see when you listen! ) 2. TIM FERRISS' PODCAST Let's also keep in mind that depression can be a result of a chemical imbalance and taking the right medicine can save your life too. There is an incredibly insightful episode of the Tim Ferriss podcast about this and much more. Just search for: " Tim Ferriss , Michael Pollan, Exploring the frontiers of psychedelics" Another incredibly insightful episode tells his own story: " My healing journey after childhood abuse" 3. ON BEING WITH KRISTA TIPPETT Krista Tippett is one of the best interviewers on this planet. She herself suffered from depression for a long time and one episode of her podcast is entirely dedicated to the subject. All of her guests went through depression. Especially Andrew Solomon has so many helpful things to say. The episode is called: " The Soul in Depression." 4. SHRINK RAP RADIO This is the oldest psychology podcast on the planet , where you can always hear a retired professor shrink, Dr. Dave, interviewing another psychologist. There are several episodes dedicated to depression.Including one episode about "Depression and Nutrition" where they say that you must have your Vitamin D, B12 and Zink levels checked before you get a complete diagnosis. 5. SINCERELY X The most interesting things people could say are the things they don't say! Because they are scared of sharing tem. But for this, there is a wonderful podcast by TED which is called: " Sincerely X".Two episodes of this podcast are dedicated to depression:-Sad In Silicon Valley-Mood Changer 6. WHERE SHOULD WE BEGIN? On this podcast, one of the best couple therapists in the world, Esther Perel, offers us real therapy sessions with real couples! It is terribly interesting and enriching! 7. DEAR THERAPISTS What we need the most on earth is HOPE. I can tell you that after listening to every single episode of this podcast, I have felt more hopeful than before. The hosts are two brilliant psychologists: Lori Gottlieb and Guy Winch. Their TED Talks and their books are extremely helpful too. On every episode a person calls who has a horrible problem that seems really insolvable. But the psychologists almost always manage to bring that person to see his story with completely different eyes. Just by asking them the right questions. At the end of every episode you hear the two therapists discuss the case together and then they tell the caller two or three concrete steps they should follow. A few days later, the person calls back to say how it went. It is incredible how much suffering can be relieved, if only you are able to see your problem clearly and then dare to take the right steps to solve it. I highly recommend you to check out the episode " Molly's Father's Suicide". Thank you for this most valuable lesson and for the wonderful animation!

Due to mental health issues that arises from substance abuse during my teenage life, I’m suffering from a tremendous lost of opportunities once being deemed unfit to serve the military. In Singapore, this stripped me away from privileges when it comes to buying a flat and seeking for a job. These would inevitably serve as a demotivation, especially knowing that even a university graduate who came from a recognised school has trouble seeking for a job. This is insane. Also, socially, It’s hard to talk about anything in regard to this and whilst interviewing for a job, I have to choose between lying or telling the truth. If I lie, it’s illegal, thus, I’ll be fine or jailed. If I were to tell the truth, I’ll be rejected and treated differently. Most importantly, the time will always be ticking. Throughout the past 4 years, I’ve been doing decently well in school and in my social life. There is no more abuse of substances and I’m coping well without medication. Right now, I’m fighting for an appeal to serve the military like all men in Singapore and I’m running out of time as the age of 21 is the oldest you can get before being call in to serve. Some may argue claiming that the doctors are professionals and they know what they are doing. However, I wish to highlight that I was under the influence at that point of time. If anyone were to be place under that condition, a similar event would unfold. Indeed, I’ve done wrong, however, I believe that I do not need to be shamed and punished for the rest of my life. The possibility of new opportunities in the future is what keeps being from striving, when the doors are locked, where can I turn to seek for an effective solution? All in all, I just want to simplify those things I’ve said above into an understandable concept - You can’t expect a human to strive when you’re telling him that no matter how well his recovery is, he would still be at a disadvantage. Moreover, you can’t expect him to have hope when a university graduate is having a difficult time seeking for jobs. It’s competitive out here and I’ll fight until my very last day which is the next year of December. Wish me luck and all the best...

If you found this video helpful, you may also want to know that there are a few issues that have to do with nutrition that can result in anxiety! For example, hormone imbalances, caffeine consumption, food sensitivities, and nutritional deficiencies (like with magnesium, vitamin D, vitamin B6, serine, choline, copper, chromium, selenium, and zinc), can all lead to anxiety!

Mental health is mental strength. Because when I had no mental health mentally I was weak. Took years to build a healthy mind. And having true diagnosed mental disability it’s a life long challenge but I found ways to make it work as imperfect as it is.
