What Is Oud? The Most Expensive Perfume Ingredient Explained

The second episode of our new blog! 👇
atriumfragrance.com/pages/blog
What are your thoughts on the trees that produce Oud / Oudh / Agarwood becoming endangered?
I personally wouldn't mind the industry leaning more in to synthetic Oud and developing more 'accurate' accords (re-creations) of the note. The biggest issue for our generation is the indifference from big industry regarding the destruction of our environment. It is sad to see that the Aquilaria trees are now going extinct from our greed...
Did you learn anything new regarding Oud from this video? If you have any other information to share, let us know in the comments below! Finally, what is your favourite Oud scent?

I am a scientist working on synthesis of various secondary plant metabolites. I don’t work on Oud and never had I work on more mainstream substances mostly and one of the main factors why this kind of research is important is to protect rainforests. Because one of the main reason for deforestation is the hunger for substances grown where rainforest is.

Love your stuff Akhi Omar! -would love to see a historical influence breakdown of oud and how it was introduced to the western markets…and effectively the impact on its new audience on the people from which it came. Fragrance, like food, I feel is a great way to embrace and recognize cultures we may have misunderstood…. And seeing oud all over the place, referenced in its original language, just makes me hopeful!

I own a 10ml bottle of 100% agarwood from India (near Jaipur). I bought it from the middle of the jungle, a guy who was selling attar told me I should try out oud. I fell in love ever since I smelt it, it’s sweet, intoxicating, euphoric. Very mysterious yet so fresh, I can sense it’s aging as well. It’s been about 7 months, the smell has aged, and gotten stronger. At first it was a bit airy now it’s deep. And it last weeks on my clothes, i treasure it more then all my niche fragrances 💖. Also fragrances with oud in them , smell wayyyyyy different then real oud, so if you can please try out real oud. Probably a fresh batch for the first try

I'm a big fan of Japanese incense which as well, uses oud. Brands like Baieido, Kunjudo, KyuKyodo, Kida Jinseido, Shunkohdo, Tennendo, Yamadamatsu, etc. all use it, also known as aloeswood. As in fragrance, the amount used and the quality used determine the price and the wonderful scent. As aloeswood is becoming scarcer, the incense industry is looking to develop lab grown oud, but it's not quite the same yet. Better living through chemistry? 😟

Thanks Omar for this Oud tutorial. You are right, it is expensive and becoming more expensive as agarwood becomes more scarce. The last time I checked fragrance site it was selling for $25,000 USD per pound. There is also a difference in smell between Indian Out and that which comes form Thailand or Cambodia. Indian Oud has a distinctly fecal scent, more of the barnyard scent you mentioned. The SE Asian Oud still has the strong barnyard scent but mix of a more woodsy aroma. I suspect the SE Asian variety is favored by most perfumers.If Ian mistaken on this please correct me.

Well I have no knowledge about another ouds except from my country Indonesia. We call it Gaharu. Gaharu or Indonesian oud smells like duo teakwood + vetiver (50%) mix with honey + frangipani + leather (50%). Yes definitely very complex aroma for piece of wood. It smells sweet, thick, creamy yet tangy and a bit sour. It must be harder for someone particulary from outside Asian countries to adapt with that kind of smell in a parfume or general scents

I'm getting about 10 deep in my collection but so far it's all been generally Mass appealing designer stuff would love to get into some of the more challenging scents but not sure where to start so I don't get overwhelmed, or off put, or worse yet make a terrible blind buy. Extracting the oil from the woods takes a lot of time. The more time of extraction the more amount of oil. Some producers sacrifice the bigger amount to get more quality. They shorten the extraction time to get the "Crème de la crème" of the oil.

Oud does NOT have animalic notes! Oud oil which is called denhal oud can have barnyard notes depending on how it’s been distilled. Oud is one of the original form of Perfuming. The word Perfum is a Latin word which means to smoke through and this is exactly what the process of burning oud is. People in the Middle East use the smoke of oud to fumigate their clothes and houses, it’s also used in social gatherings.

Most perfumes on the mainstream market 10x the final price compared to the cost, however this makes sense when you look in to the distribution chain where distributors and retailers take a cut of the profit each, also when taking account that the original perfume brand also needs to grow. It is just how business works.
@James7995
@James7995 Год назад
It’s rare to find real Oud in perfumes and you absolutely pay for it when it’s real. Even A generic pure Oud attar is fairly pricey, although that might be the safest bet if you want the real stuff.
@DuSeun

You forget that also a fraction of that price is actual profit. Cost of raw materials =/= Profit

Oud enthusiast here. Nor Xerjoff Oud Stars, nor any of the usual Amouage Oud perfumes like Interlude have the natural oud. Same goes for any Tom Ford, as in your thumbnail, as well as Initio (for the initial release of Oud For Greatness, there was a trace amount just to be able to claim it for marketing). Unfortunately.
