John Michael Godier spoke to Dr. Karen Meech, who leads the Astrobiology research team at the University of Hawaii which discovered the first interstellar object, named 'Oumuamua, by the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope. Dr. Meech's team recently led the characterization to determine the size, shape, color and light curve of this first interstellar visitor from afar - 'Oumuamua.

@@bigtravis1968 Id say its more due to the culture of science. Outside of the categorical identifiers, the less formal names are often nods to the people and places associated their their discovery. I like that about science - there's an air of respect between scientists regardless of their field of study 🤗

No one has ever seen anything like Oumuamua? I don't think so... An eminent NASA scientist named Dr Norman Bergrun -- a popular mechanical engineer -- has revealed about spotting alien spaceships around planets like the gas-giant Saturn and Jupiter. Images of these UFOs have been captured by the Voyager space probe too. This is no laughing matter as an impact would prove man's insignificance to this Universe. Personally I see now why people get religious --- fear of the unknown. Without faith that SOMETHING or SOMEONE will prevent impact, we'd all be Chicken Littles carrying signs that read "The End Is Near".

If this came from outside the solar system then it wouldn’t have tumbled through interstellar space. My guess is it occurred when it passed through the Oort Cloud or the speed it was travelling at and then interacting with the suns gravity may have put it into a tumble. Either way since no astronomers know definitively what it is conclusively, then the only known factor is that this is definitely classified as an unknown flying object.

Fun. I think this one must have gotten buried in my watch later list. The YT suggested content algorithm hasn't got a clue what to do with me. For half the day all I search for and watch is electronics stuff, except occasionally while eating lunch. Then I'm all about edutainment in the evening. They wind up showing me tons of technical suggestions in the evening, and goofy stuff in the morning. I should probably make a few private playlists just for catching up on stuff like this, but they would get lost in all my others...hopeless. ...anyways...thanks for the reminder about this one Ross. Impressive explanations from Karen Meech. To be fantastical, If Oumuamua is a spaceship "lookalike hamster wheel" with an invisible outer structure then could the suggestion of a constant tumbling motion indicate that this motion was creating artificial gravity for its occupants? Could you calculate the size/gravity of its home planet from the rate of tumbling?

Our entire universe is inside the event horizon. Knowing this should help us produce means to transit to surrounding stellar systems. While our universe seems so large, and I appear so small knowing this leads to knowing that which we must do to gain understanding of the properties which will allow us to travel unfathomable distances through which we can be where we wish without damage and not have to travel subluminal speeds. We must learn these steps to achieve our real purpose and destiny.

Another aspect of this, is that they probably have a technology that can reduce their volume while retaining the same mass. This would include the occupants as well - so that the entire vehicle and its occupants remain in scale, yet are reduced in physical dimension. This would enable a very large craft to become smaller in relation to interstellar particulate matter, and thus move faster because of reduced drag. The fact that it has been observed to be long and narrow would reinforce speculation that it is a craft designed to transit interstellar space.

What if we use the Drake Equation to figure out how many interstellar probe's there could be, we would need to add, 5 for the number of probes we have sent so far, then a percentage of those civilizations that are space faring say 50%, then a number for how long that civilization is space faring. There very well be hundreds if not thousands of probes.

Given enough time, could carbon compounds based on fullerenes in a stellar nursery form sheet or layered structures that might be rigid enough to survive violent dynamic ejection and acquire tholins? The list of elements and compounds that could comprise Oumouamoua doesn't seem to be that large. Carbon, silicon, iron or ices.
