I don't think people realise how irritating and embarrassing it is when people say "stop pulling your hair out". It's like do you honestly think if I could stop I would keep pulling it out? I hate it when my friend will point it out in front of other people it just makes it so much worse x

I’m 16 years old soon to be 17 and I still have it but I’ve improved and no longer have bold patches but still pull it out on a daily basis. I hope things improve for you in the future and that you can relate to other people and get through this

To all the people that have trichotillomania, you can get through it. I’m 13 years old and started pulling out my hair when i was 7, all my eyebrows and eyelashes were gone and i had a massive bold spot on my head. I started going to a therapist when i was 10 and it’s gotten so much better and all my hair has now grown back. I really hope whoever is reading this and is going through a hard time with this disorder, you can get through it and it will get better, don’t give up! good luck and stay safe everyone xx

Hi, I just want to say that when I was in fith through sixth grade, I had Trichotillomania. After endless nights and hours of pulling out my hair, my mom noticed my bald spots and took me to a therapist. I am now officially free of this condition by two years! 😄 I do occasionally get urges, but I know how to cope with them. I just tell myself no, I put my hand down, and I stop. It's really hard to do at first, but over time it gets easier and easier to the point all I have to do is dismiss the idea. I promise that it gets better, and it IS POSSIBLE to be free! Love you 😘💕

In my case I do notice some stress relief after pulling, but I also feel guilty and bad about it afterwords. My question is, is it possible that my trichotillomania is not trauma-related? I think I wouldn't be able to identify any traumas or bad experiences relating to it, because I just do it all the time, when I am bored, it's just like when I fiddle about with my hair or with anything. But I am not sure if that's possible, and if it is, I would like to know which one would be the correct approach for fixing it.
@magdaara4343
@magdaara4343 8 лет назад
+GreenSunshine95 It can be not trauma related. Because pulling your hair is something that hurts, when you hurt your-self you leberate adrenaline and that's really addictive. When you learn how it feels and that you like it you usually do it when you are stressed of depressed because you liberate also a lot of energy and of course, because it makes you feel good. That why it's common when you have some mental disorder
@poke-talia268
@poke-talia268 5 лет назад
I'm in my second year of university, and I've been pulling my hair since the summer after first grade. There was no major trauma to cause it. *shrug* It didn't help that the therapist I used to go to for it only had one other patient with it I knew of, and said patient was a parrot.
@alyssapearring6479

Maybe it's a self inflicted punishment or stress coping mechanism. I get stressed and do it. But I do some things to punish myself too

I'm soo glad I'm not the only one, I'm a black girl and I've been pulling out my hair since i was like 5 or 7 and first everyone thought it was just a habit I'd grow out of with age. But it never stopped. Sometimes i do it without knowing like when im focused and others whem I'm stressed like i have this urge just to start pulling and twisting my curly hair and the satisfaction and relief when i pull it out. But i then realise how bad it is when i see the amount of hair that came out. But i just can't stop even with braids it's soo hard to resist taking them out it's like an insane addiction.

32 year old man. Always pulled body hair for years and years. I'd get in these fits where the pleasurable sensation of pulling out the hair would almost put me in a trance, and I would just keep doing it until I started to run out of hair to pull in that area. Last year, for the first time, I did it to the hair on my head one night. I was terrified once I looked in the mirror. I hadn't done that since, but two days ago I got really depressed and bored and started doing it again, pulling too much hair out of my head. It's scary, because it feels good to do at the time, and you don't want to stop, but then you have to deal with messed up appearances. You don't realize what you're doing until it's too late.

I’m still in disbelief that I have this. It started it when the crown of my scalp started feeling itchy and sore I would pull on single strands constantly but then it became a habit then when I get frustrated with school studying, test I noticed I started pulling my strands out in the crown mostly, therefore I started wearing wigs for a long time it helped but then I started pulling my “body” hairs when I’m just watching tv I can’t stop. I don’t even go to the hairdressers anymore cause I’m embarrassed of my crown. 😭😭😭

YES! I wondered if you'd do a video about this. I have suffered with Trich off and on for 10 years. I moved 3 hours to be able to see a therapist that specializes in this and even joined a support group. It was very helpful! Things that helped me: got professional help, joined a facebook support group for trich, made a friend that also has it, talked about it and stopped being ashamed. When I finally decided I wanted to STOP, I kept a small notepad with me so that when I pulled a hair, I would make a tally mark on the notepad. That way I could actually see just how many I was pulling and be more aware of it. I have woken up in my sleep pulling my hair so it's very hard to stay aware but overtime you can. I was able to stop for over 2 years but had a relapse recently but was able to pull out of it again with the help of my boyfriend. He's very sweet about it and always kept an eye on me when I'd be watching tv/on the computer. If he saw my hand go up to my head, he'd say something or just hold my hand until the urge left. Side note: Do you think you may do a video on narcissism or growing up with narcissistic parents? Both my parents are and would love to see what you have to say about it. LONG COMMENT OVER.

I used to have really thick hair but two years ago I developed this disorder without even knowing. Now I have really thin hair and I'm really insecure about it. I didn't even realise this was considered a disorder but I overcome it. Tbh I'm really proud of myself for it. I now a year free of pulling out my hair. People around me treated it as such a small matter. I only found out recently that this was considered a disorder.

Even i have this problem of pulling eyebrows from the middle to the start area of the eyebrow. It feels so soothing while you pluck them each one by one although i know that gonna be so awkward ending up as a white patch with no hair at all. It feels embarrassed when i look at myself in the mirror. However i kind of stopped doing for a while but started doing the same without my notice. I have no idea how ill stop doing this.

honestly i never knew there are other people who do this. this comment section comforts me. i first got this habit when i was 12 and now im 17. i had super thick and healthy hair. after 1 or 2 years people around me started to point out that my hair had become thinner. i knew it did, i tried to stop this every month but i just couldnt. i pull hair out while scrolling through phone, studying, watching something. my new year resolution for this year was to stop this. my family told me to, i knew i had to stop what i was doing and i tried a million times but it never went away. whenever i see pictures of other people with healthy hair, it makes me so sad and i almost tear up because i know i had amazing healthy thick hair and whatever the condition of my hair is now, i did this to myself and i cant stop. it makes me want to cry because this is not the hair i was born with. this hair pulling disorder makes me procrastinate too. i want it to go away so bad. i want my old healthy hair back. also i tend to pull out my hair and put it in my mouth, is anyone out there whos going through the same thing? and if anyone knows how i can repair my damaged hair, how i can make it thicker please let me know. also does your hair go back to normal after successfully stoping this habit? like does your hair get thicker as it used to be?

I was about 6 when I started hair pulling and I’m turning 13 in a month now and I have experienced everything you’ve said I do the same I just randomly pull my hair for no reason without even realising the damage I’ve done when I get up form that room I look at the floor and see how much hair I pulled out it it was so confusing for a 6+ girl to just see that and think why am I different my whole life until a few months ago I thought I was weird, that I was different and that there was no one like me and I hated that feeling it made me feel alone so I’m so happy that there are other people that have experienced the same thing as I and I just want you to know that you’re not alone and I feel a lot of envy for those who have long and healthy hair every time I see someone with nice heathy hair I can’t help but fee jealous and beat my self up in my head saying look what you’ve done to your self if only you could’ve been less stupid and pulled it all out my hair isn’t as soft and healthy as it used to and it’s very rough instead washing my hair isn’t an easy job either but KTC 100% pure coconut oil has helped me a lot it grew a lot of my hair back and made me happy again I used to put it on my hair and massage my scalp in it for about 10 mins and then either leave it in for a few hours or overnight and then my mum would wash my hair for me and wash it out properly so there was nothing left and I did that for about a year in 2020 and my hair grew more than I expected it almost looked normal but things went down hill when I started hair pulling again and learned how to shower myself when I wash my hair it feels soapy and hard to wash weirdly and the oil makes it worse which makes me not want to put it on I think that my mum knew how to wash my hair properly and that’s how my hair grew back the way it did back in 2020 but I personally the key is to wash your hair properly and as embarrassing as it is to say I don’t think I can but I’ll try and watch some videos that show how to wash your hair properly anyways this disorder definitely makes me procrastinate too it had made me not want to go somewhere so many times and stop my fun and any time I go somewhere with my hair shown I feel anxious and only care about how my hair looks because I don’t want people to judge me by my hair and that is why I started wearing a scarf but I think that might’ve been the wrong desision as I think it’s thinning my hair because I wear it 8 hours a day for 5 days and unfortunately it will take time for your hair to grow back mine is still growing and still looks horrendous but I’m trying my best also I don’t think your hair will be the same as before and please don’t and buy all these expensive fancy products that promise you amazing hair because they’re just a waste of money and just a scam instead maybe try getting a vitamin C shampoo and conditioner and try having iron tablets and your regrowth of hair could take years unfortunately about 2-4 or maybe even 6 if you’re unlucky like I said coconut oil will help your hair grow thicker and you should also try castor oil writing this has helped me a lot to share my feeling and I hope it helped you too and whoever else may be reading this thank you so much for reading this and I wish everyone who has this disorder or who has bad hair hairs grow back healthier than before, as well as mine thank you for you’re time have an amazing day :)

I've been playing with rubberbands I am pretty sure I got my trich from being bored. I became extremely compulsive with it where I'll be half asleep and it will put me to sleep to pull it relaxes me makes me feel good. I read and I find myself doing it so much when reading and I hate that. What I have been doing though is playing with rubberbands and if they break tying knots in them stretching them out as they break again tie another knot it's really Helped me redirect this compulsion. I haven't read in awhile so idk how I'll be able to stop while reading but I have so much will power not to ever become bald that I know I can stop while reading as well. But for now the rubber bands are really helping me keep my hands busy thank the lord!

I think probably the most crushing thing I ever saw was this article called "Creepiest Celebrities Without Eyebrows." People were saying that the celebrities looked like aliens without the eyebrows. And I'm like, you think I LOOK LIKE AN ALIEN! Okay, I kind of understand the depression/anxiety connection. Life can be tough. Stress is an easy thing to come by! But really, for me, it starts during periods of intense concentration/intense boredom. (Reading college textbooks was the most effective at triggering me to do this.) I don't even notice I'm doing it at first. Then once I notice, it's really hard to stop, especially if I continue in a semi-focused state with whatever activity I was doing when I started it. The more I pull, the more irregular hairs I can find, and it won't be over until the last hair is pulled... or alternatively, I just deal with the feeling of dissatisfaction from stopping the task unfinished, but I tell myself that I'll appreciate it later when I look in the mirror and still have some eyebrows left. Now that I think about it, when I find myself doing it in the future, I think I'm going to try stopping what I'm doing and back away from the table. No more staying in that intensely focused or semi-focused state.

I get it when I am nervous or have anxiety. I always have had anxiety but it has gotten better I thought. but how I would stop the anxiety was to pluck my eye lashes and eyebrows.people look at my eyelashes and laugh and say u have a bails spot in your eye lashes but I try to act like I don’t know what they are talking about I am so glad that I looked it up on the internet because I thought it was just me I hope this will help me thank u.

*this may be triggering for some people so please be wary :) I'm so glad you made this video Kati. This is something I used to suffer with in my early teens and it has recently flared up again, after finally breaking up with my abusive longterm boyfriend. I was about 13 when it first started but I don't recall anything happening to trigger it. I was raped when I was 15 and the pulling had kind of died down by then, perhaps because I had cut my hair short, but now I'm 19 it's come back with a vengeance. I'm yet to be diagnosed with anything other than S/A since I only saw a councillor for a couple weeks when I was 16/17. When I told her what happened she said she would have to contact the police and tell my parents. My mother is an alcoholic so I don't have a very supportive living environment and that would of been very detrimental had my councillor done so, and it has made me terrified to seek help since :( So basically all I'm trying to ask is, could the pulling just be anxiety related or is it likely there's something more to it? Sorry if this is so long and complicated!

Literally not even lying I’m in the exact same boat as you, I was 15 when the trauma happened(assault, I don’t feel okay to say the R word right now) and although I told my sister she said I’m lying, it’s my fault and I just want attention. I never told my mum to because we lost our connection when something happened with her and me. I’ve been told that most disorders can start from trauma. I know you may have wrote this comment awhile ago but I want you to know that it’s okay to not feel okay and that although it’s hard to seek professional help you should try to. I’m almost 21 and it started around 14-15, I say 14 because something else happened around 14 and a half years old and that’s when it started really. And I’m only just getting help 7 years later. Also do not feel like it’s not a problem even if sometimes you don’t do it and sometimes you do, that’s still tritch and still means you have an issue. Just hearing about this gives me pulling urges.
@annieonymous6658
@annieonymous6658 4 года назад
Absolutely. It *is* anxiety related. There might not be anything else related to it. You're not doing it TO hurt yourself, are you? Not like if you were cutting yourself or burning yourself to feel the pain. Now that you are an adult, you might want to revisit the idea of seeing a therapist to work through the trauma you experienced, not just being raped, but your abusive ex-boyfriend, alcoholic mother, etc. Surely those experiences have left imprints on your psyche, so it might be something you want to explore if you are having mental/emotional/anxiety issues.

This video makes me so happy. I’ve been struggling with hair pulling since the middle of 8th grade so it’s been 9 years....I did stop for I believe almost 2 years and I was so proud of myself. (It was a huge step) in the last 6 months I’ve been sadly pulling my hair again. Hair pulling is such a burden but I’ve always learned a lot about myself while doing it. My chest gets so full of anxiety so I end up pulling (usually before I go to bed because it relaxes me) I recently got to tell my fiancé about it (he’s a nurse) and totally accepts me in and out which is a huge help. Another side note if I can give people advice write down on how you are feeling. I almost make sure I have my note pad or my phone to make sure to write down exactly how I’m feeling and sometimes it helps. This video and all the comments have brought me to tears because even though I know I wasn’t alone in this disorder but I always have felt alone because it’s not like my next door neighbor has it or someone will come right out and say it. It’s these comments and videos that keep me going. Good luck everyone. 💕

Does anyone else pull the hairs that have white bulbs at the end of them? When I tug at some hairs it hurts a little bit (not painful but an annoying pain) and when I pull it out, it has a long white bulb at the end. I researched it and it’s called sebum. I just pull them out and I feel pleasure, and then guilt, then I feel worried because I have a massive bald spot on my head. I’ve been doing this for about 2 months now and it’s terrible... I honestly don’t know what to do because I legitimately cannot stop.

Thank you so much for this video. I started pulling at my eyelashes in third grade, and my hair in fifth. It was worst in seventh grade, but it got me determined to quit. I no longer pull at my eyelashes, but I compulsively and routinely pull at my hair. I'm in ninth grade now and although it's gotten a bit better, I am nowhere near recovery. I think I do this because of stress and anxiety, or depression (it runs in the family), or both. Until yesterday, when I overheard someone talking about it, I never knew that this was an actual disorder, or that anyone else in the world actually struggled with it. I am so grateful that there are others to help encourage me; others that actually understand what I'm going through. To this day, nobody knows about it, and I don't think I'm quite ready to talk about it... But this is a start.

I found myself laughing out loud several times throughout this video. I'm not sure if it's because of how incredibly relatable everything you said was, or just the relief I felt when realizing that this is a common issue that can be fixed. But then I cried (metaphorically), when I realized that this video has been on here for two years before I finally found it. That's a shame. Questioning my willpower and sanity on a daily basis has definitely taken its toll on my self-confidence and perception of self-worth. What a great video. Thank you so much for sharing. I've got a few questions though. You mention CBT and talk therapy (not sure what that is) as effective methods for working on the underlying causes of Trichotillomania. I also did some research and came across a method called habit reversal therapy (HRT). Do you have any opinions of the comparative effectiveness of these methods? Also, I am having a variety of issues that I've always felt to be related in some ways. And now that you mention impulse control disorder, that makes a lot of sense to me. I've dealt with addiction and several embarrassing ticks (biting lips, biting nails, binge eating, compulsive video game playing, etc.) and, as it appears, anything that will distance myself from the current moment. So do you think those should all be addressed collectively or tackled individually through therapy? Finally, as somebody who is obviously discovering the nature of the problem for the first time, what would you suggest as next steps for me? Sorry about the lengthy questions, but thanks again for the video and for any info you're willing to give :)

I've suffered with this, and I'm so glad you made a video on it. I don't do it as much, because I recognise it. So, I've kinda just been working on it by myself. Purely because tricho is so unknown, like I didn't even know what it was when I was doing it, people don't understand do it's difficult to talk about it.

Realized I'm more messed up than I thought. I pull my hair so much during my 3 hr exams I don't even know when I'm doing it. It is the only thing that calms me.

I haven’t had a full set of eyelashes for 10 years now. I started picking when I was 6 years old for the first year I started with my eyebrows but then I moved to my eyelashes and just never stopped. Every time I try to quit it just ends up with me pulling out even more and I usually do it when I’m bored, anxious, or just for pleasure but I’m so tired of wanting a full set of eyelashes but can since the urge to pick is so strong. I tried wearing gloves so I can’t feel my eyelash stubs and it works but it’s hard for me to constantly keep them on

I don't know if I have this. I've started pulling my eyelashes out since I was probably 9 years old??? But I don't think, or at least I don't remember, that it was caused by stress and anxiety. I only have this urge to pull because I feel satisfaction from it?? I remember so clearly, back in primary school, this friend who was sitting beside me asked what happened to my eyelashes because they are so uneven from my pulling. I was so scared that she noticed and I tried to avoid that question. There was also that one time I was pulling in class and got called out by my favourite teacher, it felt rlly bad. I've always been self-conscious about people noticing I have missing eyelashes. At one point I was afraid to have my picture taken because it's always obvious my eyelashes are missing. Even my parents scolded me multiple times for it and I always avoid replying them about it because I'm so scared. But I just can't stop that urge to pull my eyelashes when I'm lying on my bed....

I started pulling when I was 13. About the same time I started getting bullied at school. I developed serious anxiety disorders and clinical depression. Trich got worse as the bullying went on into high school, and continued even after I moved schools. I’m 18 now and still struggle with trich, now more than ever.

I’ve been doing this since 5th grade, and I used to think there was something wrong with me. Sometimes I try to stop myself but before I know it, I’m pulling my hair out again. It’s really embarrassing and I’m scared to talk to someone about it…

I pulled my hair out as a young girl. My parents fought alot. I was also mute with most people and had severe anxiety. I stopped pulling on my own before I reached double digits although I still liked the feeling I cared about my self image more. I do still suffer from anxiety but it's much less severe. I'm 29 now.

Hey! My trich started from post traumatic stress disorder after someone I felt responsible for killed themselves when I was 19. I found my anxiety levels were very high but I wasn't aware this had affected me so badly and thus used hair pulling as a coping method. I did talk and CBT and I feel this helped me A LOT. I am largely dealing with my anxiety well now and have better coping methods, yet I still pull.. I find the hardest part of having trich is staying strong and proactive about your trich for long periods of time. I can stop myself pulling for a few hours, sometimes a day or so, but facing a week seems so daunting. I know it's small steps at a time but it's such a frustrating disorder as you often feel you are your own enemy. Thanks for this video, it confirmed that everything my psychologist does is the best practise and if I stay strong and keep going I will be pull free! I recently managed to break a life long habit of nail biting, so I am optimistic :)

I don't like when people ask why I do that to myself. And that itself makes me feel bad and I pluck. I usually pluck my eyelashes and eyebrows, it's been years already so I gotten better, but lately I've been really stressed and crying alot so I'm plucking, and now my eyelashes are almost gone just from 30 minutes 😓
