The API does and Vulkan is just one of many and the least successful in its 20 year history... well may be a tad more successful than Glide... Consoles have their own 3D APIs and why on earth should Sony re-release their dev IDE to factor on Vulkan if they already have their own standard? Doesn't make any sense. Steam supports any API that's compatible with Windows btw...

Calling Vulkan just another API comes up a little short of the whole story. Part of the excitement for people like me (a developer in the consoles and PC industries for years, now looking into mobile development) is the compiler infrastructure behind it, which is less C++ centric (like OpenGL and DirectX have been historically) and more like general LLVM compiler infrastructure. More specifically, IR languages (Intermediate Representation) like LLVM-IR and Vulkan-IR make it a lot easier to write and partially-compile programs once in almost any language that can compile to that IR (LLVM already supports most modern high level languages and Vulkan is soon to follow), and come out near optimal for any hardware that supports the same IR command set (almost all modern hardware). This gets us much closer to the old goal of write-once/run-anywhere that programmers have wanted forever, and away from the past performance trade-offs endemic to previous sad attempts like Java VM -- remember Java phone games? Further, this will enable JIT/JAT bytecode->native compiler methods like those Google has been integrating into Android ART, and helps make such native-optimizing installer pathways portable to any OS and hardware combination. In the end, this just makes the economics too good to pass up! We can finally create a game or even a whole new engine once, and have the ability to sell it anywhere, to anyone with a device supporting our minimum IOPS+FLOPS requirements. No more separate releases for each matrixed combination of ARM, x86, x86-64, MIPS, A9, PowerPC, Cell, Radeon, GeForce, Mali, Adreno, Windows, Steam, Android, iOS, BSD, etc. -- just sell it to whomever wants it day 1! That's just good for everyone involved, except for the greedy platform monopolist middlemen who always ruin creative markets (like Microsoft and Sony). TL;DR: Vulkan compiler infrastructure enables a future gaming market more like Humble Indie Bundle and Steam, less like console exclusive-only B.S.
@MaxterTheTurtle
@MaxterTheTurtle 8 лет назад
I don't know if this is unfortunate or not, but SPIR-V is no longer using the LLVM intermediate representation format. I don't fully know the implications of the new format, but from what Khronos claims it's still fully platform independent. I tend to believe them considering how many vendors are backing Vulkan. As far as LLVM is concerned, I love it. It's so close to GCC in terms of performance and capabilities, but with a much more modern and straight forward codebase. When I'm finished with my game, if there are no performance differences, I'm going to compile with CLANG and use that from now on.
@TakeyMcTaker
@TakeyMcTaker 8 лет назад
SPIR is now its own intermediate representation (thus the IR at the end of the acronym -- SPIR-IR would be redundant). It has all the advantages of any IR just like LLVM-IR, but maintaining it separately makes perfect sense just as CPU's are usually designed separately from GPU's (although they sometimes get joined on chip as APU's, the design process doesn't change that much). Yes that may impact language support in the short term, but any LLVM-IR supported language with OpenGL calls should be easily translated to use SPIR in short order, with the benefit of better GPU native optimization and wider target support in the long term.
@MaxterTheTurtle
@MaxterTheTurtle 8 лет назад
TakeyMcTaker I know this is unrelated to what you are talking about, but you mentioned that you are a PC/console developer. It seems to me, at least on PC, that most games are written using DirectX. Do you see any indication of the industry moving to Vulkan? I unfortunately have to run radeonsi drivers on Mesa, so I cannot experiment with Vulkan currently. With OpenGL, the shader source has to be released with the binary. When the application runs the shader is compiled by the driver. I maybe incorrect, but I assume that SPIR-V's intermediate representation will be a lot like LLVM-IR (resembling assembly.) Then the driver compiles that into usable machine code (for the GPU.) An application is distributed with the SPIR-V code and not the shader source. I'm hoping that moving the driver compilation from the higher level constructs to the lower level assembly-like instructions will force better adherence to the Vulkan specifications. Currently I am having issues with OpenGL being compiled differently on different drivers. It would be nice if Vulkan solved that problem.
@TakeyMcTaker
@TakeyMcTaker 8 лет назад
+MaxterTheTurtle I used OpenGL exclusively, including on Windows. Unfortunately, there's nothing inherent to Vulkan that makes proprietary driver writers any better at their jobs. The bigger change on that side will be increasing open source driver support as more open source kernels (like StreamOS and Android) take more market share. Even Sony PlayStation and Apple kernels are all Open BSD derivatives, so that is much closer than you think.

As a programmer playing around with Vulkan at the moment... I'm loving it. OpenGL was a horrendous mess, Direct3D was way ahead. But Vulkan is simple, clean, straight forward. I'm very impressed. Sure there's a few small things that annoy me (like why secondary command buffers are tied to a render pass? coordinating command buffer pools in a multi-threaded engine can be a bit bizzare), but its solid and I'm having a blast. As far as Vulkan vs D3D12, for all intents and purposes they are the same thing. Sure there are a few small differences, but nothing that will really matter in terms of performance. I'm excited for Vulkan, I think it'll become the 'de-facto' graphics API in no time.

@CrimsonTide001
@CrimsonTide001 4 года назад
@@Kino-Imsureq I learned it mainly by just reading through the official spec. Its actually well written and makes sense (unlike the usual legal-ese illegible nonsense of the OpenGL spec). Its dense, and you need to know the basics, but otherwise is the best source. Initially there is a lot of 'boilerplate' code to write to get things up and running. But its not hard, just a bit tedious. The nice thing is though you don't have to worry about what the driver will or will not do. You've told it explicitly at every step of the way exactly what you want. What comes out of the other end is extremely predictable, which is exactly what you want. I would not start at OpenGL and move to Vulkan, in fact I wouldn't with OpenGL on my worst enemy. Just jump into Vulkan. If you want to make a custom game engine (which is the whole reason to use any of these, if all you want to do is make a simple game use Unity or Unreal), you're going to have to learn about command buffers/lists, viewports, transformations, rendering pipeline, etc... Best thing is not to learn bad habits and just jump in the deep end, you'll be a lot happier in the long run.

A very important point that you missed is that Vulkan supports multiple versions of Windows and DirectX 12 does not. So for those gamers that prefer Windows and might use older versions for one reason or another Vulkan is superior to Microsoft's own API. Windows 10 has has had some issues with some older games even in compatibility modes so that could be one reason for gamers to keep a drive or complete system with an older version of Windows on it.

While I don't like certain things with 10, there are some things that you would have thought would just be part of Windows in 7 that aren't. I would suggest that if you're going to build a new PC, put 10 on it, since it will last longer, unlike Windows 8/8.1 and Vista before it.

+Stu Bur Couldn't you say the same about OpenGL.. it's always mostly been great on backwards compatibility. I'm not sure there was a real need for Vulkan because in many ways OpenGl has always been better then DirectX and OpenGL is still being developed.. why the branch I wonder? I know tons of folks still using Windows XP and rightly so because it doesn't have the huge illegal spyware scheme built in to it like Windows 10 does. It's sad that we live in an age where the companies use the products we love to illegally spy on us and the government is in bed with these corrupt companies which is corrupt itself. . I stopped buying Microsoft products. No justice for the citizens. That's why Vulkan and good cross platform technologies need to happen, so we can all get away from proprietary making money grubbing snakes in the grass like Microsoft and use all open source software for our protection. As a gamer, I say we need more open source games. It's a crime for a game to cost 60 bucks when you only get 20 bucks worth of play out of many of them. I don't care about anyone making money. This world shouldn't be based on money. it's time for us to change that IMO.

+Major Kushanagi Excatly....!!! do not let this happens to PC Gaming!!! Do not Let that Dirty Business Wash out your Mind.... ----------------------------------- first of all vulkan never head-to-head against Microsoft not even close in PC Gaming. In Vulken Mobile Gaming Demo Video (Eye Candy) There are only Some object/Geometry (Countable) which is Nothing in front of real Full Game so it's not that much powerful that you think it is. if you want to see real processing power then go and watch DirectX 12 Demo video you'll realize that which is more powerful. >what happens if Vulkan made into PC market? - What i think is Vulkan Devs are more of a Linux Lovers thats why thay got support from google (Moto : Be Evil, We want your data). To get in market Vulken get Partners with some Studio to make an eye candy game Exclusively made with use of Vulken API so they got some community (Steam is also with them). and then thay gonna Release Same game for Linux but with Better Graphics (monopoly) and then People like "Gameranx" and others Compare it with windows Version in final verdict they Choose Linux as Best for Graphics. > there is must be an Exclusive Platform.... - Now People seen the Game with Tweaked Graphics they gonna believe that Vulcan is Better then DX12 and The Next Exclusive Games from Vulken will be Exclusive to Linux Platform too and Also be an Eye Candy. now Vulken is Doing Dirty Business and Microsoft Not gonna Sit back and see all the drama thay also do something to Save the Platform and Developers so they Might Bring Halo and other Exclusively to PC and Give a Glimpse of Next DX Universal and Make it Open source. > And the War Begins... -In answer to Vulken...MS also step up to Partnership with Studio and Bring Some Exclusive to Windows Platform with DX Universal Exclusive Games and then Vulken Does the same and Chain Reaction goes on and on.....Do you Realize that Same Thing Happening With Consoles. All Console Market Divided in to Exclusives. and in the End Gamers Gonna Pay so Don't Let that Happen to The PC Gaming and Gamers. Choose Windows and DirectX as best for Gamers. >DirectX is Better... - Because Windows and DX Both are Microsoft Products and DX Comes Embedded in to windows so you Do not need 3rd party API to Make games and also Vulken API is Kind of Layer in top of Windows OS so it's Requires it's own Library and Compilers that Require More Processing Power and Data Transfer at the other side Like i said before DX comes Embedded into Windows so it has all the Windows Secrets to make Most Use of an Hardware and Software. >Finally... -Don't you think if Steam Machines Comes with Windows insted of Linux they gonna be a Success and google is also interested in Vulken so Now or Letter they gonna Introduce Google Play service for Gaming and Put Fucking Ads in Games So Please Folks Stick with One Good Eco-System. Don't let Some Business People Divide The Gaming and Gamers.

First there was 3Dfx, then nVidia came and contested the market. the Voodoo/Voodoo 2 (3Dfx) had already SLI Capabilities which the Riva and later GeForce (nVidia) lacked but it was cheaper. But Management screwed up and nVidia won. Then ATi came and delivered a more cheaper version of advanced graphics but at a higher power consumption, so this was the second graphics war, that is kinda still raging on.

Well, I have been using OpenGL for nealy 20 years now and I can say that I'm looking forward to developing my stuff using vulkan! This might a fact that will be lost to some people, but one of the cool parts of Vulkan is that it uses OpenGL shader language that most of us already know, so transitioning to it should be smouther than the shader language was to learn. That is about as technical as I will get here. But, one more thing I will add. Before the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC), khronos announced that they where going to introduce a new graphics API. On my way to GDC it was announced that Lenard Nimoy had passed away and at GDC, khronos announced that their graphics api would be called Vulkan. Now I know what you might be thinking, but I was tould many times that the name was not to honer Lenard Nimoy be was a decision made long before Nimoy's death! Vulken is the god of fire wielding a hammer.

Yes, maybe today, and it is not a problem with native games, just over Wine, maybe. I have Steam, and bunch of games tryed, all of them works perfectly on Linux, like it should be, no problems there. And i have sayed "future of gaming", and i mean, the future, because, more and more games come natively to linux. And Native games works just perfect, with one click. More and more people use Linux, and in near future, the gaming company should realise, that, if they want to sell more on the market, should create native games for linux to. My vision here is, that, in couple of years, Linux would be on any house, on any PC (now is to, in any andoid phone, autos, ....) It just need a litle bit more time. The curve of Linux going up, and Windows going down has began. Trust me. For all this, you have google, youtube, ... And you will realise the situation.

+Martin Angelov It will work on both. The question is really how well. That is mostly down to either devs patching specifically for a manufacturer or architecture, or nvidia/amd releasing drivers to improve individual game performance. History tells us that nVidia is massively more reliable when it comes to frequent driver updates. If AMD steps up its game, they should be fine at achieving comparable FPS/dollar depending on how the next gen of card releases go.

I like both, competition keeps things fresh and interesting and stops stagnation. Also fixing "issues" with each API can lead to new features and better ways of doing things that may not even be found or implemented if it was just a one API race. Even one doing better than the other/s is a plus as it forces the ones falling behind to improve to stay competitive. So yeah I am for both as that's where the real progress is.

I’m a graphics programmer who is currently ramping up on Vulcan having used OpenGL for years. I haven’t touched DirectX since DX9 that goes right back to around the mid 2000s. Why did I abandon DX? For the exact reason you gave of it only being on Windows even though I preferred using it. Back to today and my use of OpenGL, it has allowed me to work on my preferred platforms of Mac and Linux (I haven’t been a Windows user since 2014 now) so being exclusively OpenGL was the way to go. Regarding Vulkan, strictly speaking it is not natively supported on Mac, it’s actually a layer on top of Apple’s Metal that is their native graphics API. For those interested, Vulkan on Mac is actually called “MoltenVK” and is also developed by Khronos. I’ll stop here because there is so much to say, but it suffices to say that Vulkan is actually a very complicated graphics API that is not beginner friendly. This means that games are extremely,y complicated and take even longer to develop from scratch. There is a wealth of technical reasons that are beyond the scope of this video but regardless, expect great things from the Vulkan API.

I'm unsure if it was stated before, but in the video, it was said that Directx 12 would only be for the windows OS, but it's really only for Windows 10 and XBox 1, Windows 7 and 8.1 aren't getting it seeing that Directx 11.1 is the latest update version for Windows 7, and Directx 11.2 for windows 8.1. Vulcan is available for all other operating systems, including 7 and 8.1, so that gives even more reason for companies such as Valve to support Vulcan, for that very comparable performance to be available to Linux, Mac, and Windows 7 and 8.1 along with Windows 10. Not everyone took the free update to Windows 10, so everyone who has Windows 7 and 8.1 will have to purchase Windows 10 to experience Directx 12, or the developers can just use Vulcan.

Vulkan is not just the successor to OpenGL, it's also the successor to OpenCL. Vulkan combines the two - graphics and compute - into a single API. That's worth mentioning because "compute" is used for stuff like physics simulation in games. So that the physics can also, like the graphics, be hardware accelerated and, you know, when you shatter that crystal with your shotgun, all the hundreds of shattered pieces can smoothly bounce around the environment without any FPS loss. Or, indeed, Lara Croft's ponytail can get hardware acceleration too. That will also make a big difference to games, when the physics - which often still lives on the CPU - can be pumped through the GPU and there can be full physics on thousands of objects without slow down. And because it's all accessible from the same API, then the support is there and it becomes reliable and easier for coders to use "compute" for this sort of thing all the time. ("Compute" can also be used for stuff like ray-tracing too. Or, well, anything that could do with being hardware accelerated on the immensely parallel hardware of a GPU.)

Vulkan seems to help with optimization which helps more people keep gaming regardless of hardware.

Trying to explain what an API actually IS, can be extremely difficult. Imagine trying to carve a miniature log cabin out of raw lumber, painstakingly crafting each piece, one at a time. Then imagine Lincoln Logs. You have to learn the details of how each piece fits with the other pieces, and the type of possible connections are limited, but you can build something really fast with minimal effort, then add or remove or reorganize as needed, with ease. That is what an API does for computer code.

From benchmarks we can tell it performs a little better than directx 12.

+Arstellum Well, it's supposed to based off of Mantle. Both DX12 and Vulkan will probably be much harder to develop for than OpenGL, which means developers could either dramatically improve the performance of their games, or shoot themselves in the foot.

Being able to ditch windows 10 spyware for Linux. This is not big news for gaming. Most businesses I know wont touch windows 8 or 10. In fact I am banned from using my windows 10 laptop on some client sites. I would love to be able to ditch windows completely. Who wouldnt?
@YourPalHDee

Most Businesses won't touch Windows 8 or 10 because they are consumer products, they add no value to work that is primarily done on spreadsheets like Excel. It is big news for gaming, and businesses have absolutely nothing to do with that. A personal computer and a business computer are 2 very different products with 2 very different customers. As a gamer I would appreciate having the choice of a SteamOS that actually benefits me, as would a lot of gamers.

Dx12 uses a lot of async. Thats Win10. Async is all about using all your cores, it's way better for taking most of the hardware

Average result so far by most lab tests is 0-10% improvement. Far less than most people were expecting I think. Personally, I am really disappointed and not enough to compensate for the huge limitations. For example. If you use Nvidia GPU's right now (as I do with multi Titan X's in my primary setup). One is very much aware that Nvidia just lost, big time. They gambled the farm on retaining a proprietary technology, the industry at large kicked back and they lost. Now they have no GPU that can take advantage of the benefits of the alleged DX12. It gets worse in the real world. No one bothered to consider Multi GPU under DX12. Those that did test it in a lab environment are seeing terrible returns and I dont know a game that uses it yet. So this means, games like Ark have a real problem. They invested a lot of capital in DX12 winning the battle. Delivering performance gains and being the standard. They lost. I have an ark server and most of my users are so sick of the performance they dont bother to log in. From enthusiasts like me that just buy the latest stuff to others that sensibly, use the upgrade route of staying a generation behind, but behind a second card to run new games at greatr frame rates when a new gen is released. This is not helped by poor game engines like Unreal Engine 4 which looks great but needs a lot of horsepower. Poorly optimised, prone to memorys leaks and issues it doesnt support SLI let alone multi gpu. What about BF4? For many it runs worse in DX12 mode and can be glitchy. Try as I might I see no visible difference in quality but worse, I Can only use 1 GPU in DX12 mode where I Can run it properly across all gpu's in DX12 mode. Not to mention many people these days work from home. Many home users working for corporates are banned from installing windows 10 because of the security and client privacy issues it brings with it. I recently had all but 1 standalone pc rolled back to windows 7 myself and I honestly had a better time of it since.

As a recent convert to PC gaming from console I have to say that the lack of conformity in general has been extremely uncomfortable to deal with. On a personal level I'm so used to having access to the same friend list throughout all my games without going the extra mile to add them to a 3rd party friend system, but on a bigger note I'm much more used to not having too many options. I've been living in my own little bubble of uniform technology so it's interesting to see the widespread debate over a topic like this.

An error in this movie, Mac/iOS does not have support for vulcan (and probably won't anytime soon). They have been asked if they wanted to cooperate, and since they are working on their own low-level 3D GPU API metal they do not have any plans to support it. Neither have they said that they won't though, so they might hopefully add support for it in a couple of years if vulcan is successful and metal is not.

When I first heard of Vulkan I was happy to see that it going cross platform. But the bigger part to why I was really happy to see Vulkan, that you didn't talk about in the video. Is that it should be much better preforming because it uses less CPU and put more of the work on the GPU which how it should be.. I have a much older laptop and i few games like Dota2 ran so much better for me. So i hope Vulkan keeps going and more games get ported to it, or newly made for it

@DFWanderingKid

+Juan Diego Unfortunately, it's incredibly time consuming to subtitle videos, especially at the rate Gameranx and Falcon produce videos. To do transcription well you need special equipment (not costly, but takes getting used to) and a solid block of time. Rough rates from poking around the internet is in the realm of $10-$15/minute of video. That time and money is what they're spending creating the graphics and doing the research for the next video they want to put out. It's very difficult to subtitle all but the most simple of things.
