Unmistakably German: that, believe it or not, was the advertising strap line devised for the big promotional push of the 2008 Citroen C5. In the TV ad a blonde businessman drives the car through a German landscape backed by a Wagner soundtrack. Boris pauses only to eat some Bratwurst in a bier keller before parking up at Berlin's Brandenburg gate. The Citroen C5, a heavily accented voiceover tells us, is "unmistakably German - made in France".
The intention was to underline the supposed Germanic quality of the C5, positioning it as an alternative to the increasingly popular saloons from BMW and Audi. The effect was to undermine a century of Citroen heritage, diverting attention from the reasons that people might actually buy a C5. The car is big, comfortable, well equipped and not German. It's also distinctly affordable on the used market.

I bought a second hand 2014 2.2 hdi 204hp with hidroActive 3+ suspension and did 21000 kms with it already, i love it, its made for highways, i was able to achieve around 1450 km with one tank (71 litres), very confortable and nice to drive even for long rides (8 hours).

I've had a tourer Exclusive for the past 7 1/2yrs and has only just broken down for the first time that resulted from the clutch master cylinder failing. I chose to have the complete clutch and dual mass flywheel replaced at the same time as the garage stated that the clutch action was heavier than normal and it had probably caused the master cylinder to fail. She has been very cheap to run + very reliable. It's had a Gear selector unit, Power steering pipes, gear knob & OSF wheel hub replaced during my ownership as well. Not bad for 12yrs and 131,000 miles of comfortable driving. IMO the main faults are: Power steering pipes, steel into aluminium. Chrome plating on plastic sleave on the reverse gear selector peeling and requiring the whole gear selector unit to be replaced as they don't supply any individual parts for it! Previous cars included in reverse order XM 2.5TD hatch, Xantia 1.9TD hatch and BX DTR hatch, all hydro-Pneumatic quirky, comfortable and lovely to drive. I was sad that Citroen discontinued the Hydro-Pneumatic suspension which is why I have not bought a new car.

My father sold his Citroen Xantia II in 2009 and bought a C5 1.8l saloon who has the same color as the one in your video. Right now it has 109.000klm and still smells like a new car. As far as problems none so far! But at 120+ km/hr you can hear the air entering the cabin (which I believe comes from the front windows) which is a little bit annoying in the trips we are doing (550 kilometers from Corinth to Thessaloniki) several times per year. Overall a decent 15 year old family car.

If you are talking about a high pitched noise - try folding the mirrors in. (Of course you can't drive that way, but the high pitched noise comes from the mirrors.)

Just bought one 2008 model with 130k km that had the hydralic suspension pump failed. Only paid 1200€ for it and its in great condition otherwise. Its already getting the pump replaced and going to act as my highway car. Never had a baguette but lets see how it turns out. Kinda looking forward for the ventilated seats etc.

I'm a man who's content driving a car stiff enough that you could run over a pound coin and tell whether it's heads or tails. I enjoy my pointy, sporty little machines. My last two cars were an R53 Cooper S and a GR Yaris... but man, there are just some cars... you know them when you see them that they are special just like this C5. Usually some under appreciated oddball collision of all the right things coming together at the right time. I would own one of these in a heartbeat. I will always have a soft spot for the avant-garde or bravely experimental driving machines.

@@deblu5130 Other road users!😉 Half the service intervals eg. every 10,000miles (not 20,000mls as stipulated) and it should last a long time. Plus TIMING BELT!!! Get the gear oil changed every 3-4yrs and the hydraulic system flushed + new fluid also 3-4yrs. Get the air con checked regularly and keep it ON all the time, it helps stop the seals drying out & helps keep the windows from fogging in winter. HTH

I never understood why peugeot and citroen changed from no buttons on the steering wheel, to these monstrosities. They have almost exactly same functions with the 2 stalks mounted behind the steering wheel. You don't need to look at them, the buttons were always at the right spot. It is as if they had to show they had visible steering wheel buttons.

I have always had mixed feelings about these: they are very good looking and have many strong attributes but I disagree that they are reasonably affordable, they come up quite high for the class on the used car market (you could interpret that various ways) and the majority are terribly underpowered, the higher powered ones being markedly more expensive.

Hi, I'm Amir Dreek from Bosnia and Herzegovina, I would like to ask all the good people who watch this video about citroen c5 if they can help me buy that car because I really like it and it's an unfulfilled dream for me, I would like to have it but because of my disability I am not able to buy it for myself.

Whoever made this review clearly hasn't owned one long-term, so let me enlighten you. I bought mine, a 2009 2.0 HDi exclusive model, has any feature you can think of. So firstly the turbo gave out, the price i payed for labor was half what the turbo cost, because some "genius" french engineer decided to put it on the back of the engine, therefore it had to come out, next all four of the injectors went out, they are expensive AF, because they have some crystals inside them, you know, because of emissions, after them the fuel pump went, after it the suspension pump went, and they do cost a premium, and lets not forget the lovely DMF, plus that car blows through engine mount bushings like crazy. Ah, and you better pray your day lights don't go out, because the bulbs are rare and expensive and you have to detatch the bumper to change them, it costs alot if you can't do it yourself, genius french engineering at it's finest. Oh and the navigation displays often burn pixels, it's a common fault. If you have money to blow, go for it, I'm glad i got rid of mine.
