What Makes This Singer Great Jon Bon Jovi
Few singers could make anthemic rock the way Jon Bon Jovi did and back in the 80s, he really was the quintessential example of 80s metal glam rock.
Known as the frontman to Bon Jovi, Jon started the band back in 1983 and they produced 2 albums over the next two years.
It was their third album Slippery When Wet that really put the band on the map and it went on to sell over 28 million copies.
The band has gone on to release 14 studio albums and sold over 130 million records making them one of the best-selling American rock bands of all time.
In addition to singing, Jon is an incredibly talented songwriter and was inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2009.
Jon has also worked in movies both acting, as well as writing music which included the soundtrack to Young Guns II.
I'll be looking at a live performance of Jon as I share what I think makes him great and I'd love to get your input as well. Please let me know what you think stands out about Jon!

Jon is more than a singer. He's a mix of charisma, humbleness, ability, trust and faith. He shot his voice for us. I saw him in Zurich last year. That concert was a real life experience and trust me: no one of the guys in the stadium were disappointed. When I think of him, I think of the history he made and the impact he and the guys made within the music business. He's one of the real immortals of music.

Not only a great vocalist, a great songwriter too! He was always very adaptive. Started as a hair rock/glam rock band then when everything was collapsing for the hard rock bands in 90's, he managed to save his band with his edgy, raw record 'These Days' and the musicianship was TOP! Still think it's a very underrated album and was a great answer to the grunge movement as it put something new to the table. In 2000's he proved himself again with a song like It's My Life, working with Max Martin who produced Ricky Martin that time! The production of that song is INSANE! After 20 years, still sounds fresh! It's an incredible achievement for that era, when you think lots of hard rock bands decided to stay in 80's musically. He never stopped trying new ideas on his music and arrangements. 'Sadly he started losing his voice after 2002. Not only bad technique, also non-stop touring for 36 years led to it. One last thing; his second solo album 'Destination Anywhere' was great and a very underrated one too. Thank you for the video Ken! You're the best!

One of the most important things about Jon Bon Jovi is loyalty. He's had the same record label, band mates and wife since the inception of his career. He surrounds himself with family, his brothers work for/with him. His mom was in charge of his fan club early on! I truly believe you get what you give. As far back as I can remember, he has been generous and given back, like performing at Farm Aid in 1985. He and Richie wrote an original song literally on their way to the festival! He has inferences of God in most songs. What's not to love and respect!

I really like the definition of "street singer", Jon Bon Jovi's voice has that attribute. Also he sings in character, every song has a different approach, he gets in character and interprets the songs. In my view this last aspect alone sets him apart from most rock n roll voices. Not to mention the passion and conviction of his delivery. Many, many attributes in Jon Bon Jovi's chops. In his prime one of the greatest rock voices of all time.

Aside the technical stuff, what I really value is how he sings the lyrics, its not just a perfect pitch sound, it is what you feel when words have a meaninful sound in the song, it feels that he cares about each word. At the end, what lingers on isnt the technical, but the feelings. Some how he tells a story and he reflects the society, within a time frame, in a inspiring way through music.

Paraphrasing a statement from Jon Bon Jovi: "There are many singers out there better than me. There are many guitar players out there that plays better than Ritchie. But when we get together on stage, we have a chemistry". This is so true. The original band together was magic, especially live. (I've seen them several times). And Destination Anywhere is so different from Bon Jovi productions, because it' s very personal..but it was very well produced also. On the other hand, Blaze of Glory blowed my mind in 1991, great interpretation and very good lyrics! Loved the pianos, violins, harmonics, and the fact of getting inspiration from just one story, one movie, one character, to write a whole album!! I couldn't believe it! @@jussirytkonen2871 That WAS an awesome performance. If you're not aware of it though (or maybe you are), my personal favourite of Jon's best live vocal is the band playing 'Good Guys Don't Always Wear White' at a "movie awards" show in '94. It's on here if you search for it. I'm rubbish at links and shit, so I hope you can find it if you don't already know of it. I love that song, it's not a well known one unless you're a fan, but it's awesome, and he nails that live version with the 'full' voice that we all loved in the first place, and sadly the voice that he lost years ago now.

What can I say about Jon. I listened to them since I was 8 years old and still have! (I'm 39 atm) I'm from Greece so I hadn't had the opportunity to watch them live when they had their huge success back in 80s-90s, but when they got here in 2011 I was THERE!!! And it was all I imagined and more so much more! It was a dream and it came true in my 30th birthday! I love all of their songs but I just live for the "outsiders". Shot through the heart, love lies, burning for love, only lonely... Just a few of relatively unknown but even better songs than the hits for me. Also, besides than a great musician he is a perfect role model, in an industry that wants rock stars full on drugs and alcohol he proved everyone that rock stars can have a family and a happy marriage after all these years!

Bon Jovi - my favourite band! Jon puts all his heart to every single word he sings, you can feel all the emotions. He's got everything you need in a frontman - great voice, charisma, humility, connection with the audience. People sometimes point out other singers to me to check out but they just don't have it, I don't feel it somehow. When Jon sings, it's all there - his heart and soul on a sleeve. Same applies to Richie - I feel every note he plays, it's in his moves, facial expressions. When I watch other guitarists, I don't get the same, something is missing. And the magic between Jon and Richie is so unbelievable that it's supernatural :) As for Jon's voice, I saw a lot of his old videos and he really abused his voice a lot, taking it to limits. I understand the passion but I'd rather he had saved it so he can last longer...Btw, the best performance is Always in Wembley 1995. Thank you for this video. It would be nice to see a bit more of his vocals :)

I can talk about Jon for hours and hours. I'm a huge fan of him of the band of their music and Jon voice is phenomenon. Jon is so talented, like you said he's an hardworker and a good businessman. What I like about him is that he never take things for granted, never and keep working hard to these days. He always try to give his best during shows for the fans, he don't want to disapoint anyone, no matter if their is thousand of people or hundread he always give his best. He's a fantastic songwriter, he know how to write a song, he always found the good words to say and he have this ability to say what everybody think or feel and that's amazing. His songs are piece of history at first because many of them are anthem and everybody's know those songs they are immortal like Livin On A Prayer, You Give Love A Bad Name, Bad Medicine, Bed of Roses, Always, It's My Life and so many others. But also because Jon wrote about history, about what the world have been through over the years and his last album 2020 is full of history songs like Do What You Can that he wrote for the Covid pandemic but also American Reckoning for George Floyd or even Lower The Flag about the gun violence and Unbroken for veterans. This album is a masterpiece to me so deep, so different but so Bon Jovi. He always knew how to make new stuff and keep the foundation of the band, he stay true to who he is and what the band is. Another great thing about him is that is a simple guy he never played the rockstart and pretend to be better than someone else, he's very humble. He is a very kind and generous man he created the JBJ Soul Foundation with his wife Dorothea to give home to homeless people and then he create the JBJ Soul Kitchen to feed these people and all the people in need. He has 3 restaurants now in New Jersey and he give hope to everyone. He even create a food bank during the quarantine to feed the people, he's the best. He's a great husband and father. I recently had a tough time in my life and fell into depression and Jon saved me, his music his words help me like nothing did before. I know it seem crazy but it's true his words touch me and it was like he was talking to me to say, it's alrigt you're gonna be fine and I see things really differently now. I'm sure his music help a lot of people over the years and I can't wait to see what is going to do next. Can't wait for a next album because even if his voice is not the same it still beautiful and still rock, it's different but it's amazing, I love it. I love him to death, I even have the tattoo of the Bon Jovi logo, I love and admire him so much. Sorry for this long long text.

One word for this: Amazing! Thank you Ken for making this video. Me as a die hard Bon Jovi fan, I really enjoyed watching this. The chemistry between jon and richie was just phenomenal especially when seeing them rocking a stadium audience. I saw them last year in munich and yes, jon has problems with his voice, but when the crowd joins in, nobody cares about this anymore. Singing Living on a Prayer with 70.000 other people will always be an awesome feeling🤟 Greetings from Germany🇩🇪

Jon blew his voice out constantly on the Slippery & New Jersey tours (1987-1989)... but he recovered and I think his strongest vocals were from 1992-1996. Watch These Days from TFI Friday, London 1996... absolutely incredible performance that night!!!

I also think about his stamina throughout touring. They had some huge tours in the late 80’s where they played 200+ dates across 12-18 months on the road. And up until 2013 Jon was still performing nearly 3 hour concerts on tour and killing it. His stamina is amazing and like you mentioned, he’s a very hard working guy

Hi Ken, Thank you for this!! I m doing a 1995 (That's the year you picked in the last clip!) Bon Jovi concert review series on my channel, so I ve been listening to him a lot, and his voice in 1995 was so melodic: Even when he talked, he would still enchant you! In the Netherlands the fairy tale of The Seven Little goats has a part where the wolf eats chalk to soften his voice (don't try this at home) so the little goats open the door for him: It sounded like Jon had the softest, most enchanting (talking) voice imaginable. I hope he sees your video, calls you up and persuades you to spill all the secrets you have for him, with regard to his voice. But then again- with the legacy he's keeping, and everything he's given us already: He now does so much for his community (as you mentioned, thank you for that) and definitely doesn't "snowflake" around his voice all the time. I gotta say, there is an appeal in that as well. He is an example of someone fully in charge of his life, and with extremely strong values. We will always swing that door open for him, until the end of our days.

One of my top favorite bands! My first concert was Bon Jovi 2008! I have seen them 5 times live, most recently in 2017. There isn't a song of their's I don't like. I mean of their entire catalog from studio releases to the B-sides and outtakes, I love it all! It makes me feel good and brings back a lot of special memories! I really love the memories of and the history I have experiencing the band! Thank you for this one!

I've seen Bon Jovi many times through the 90's and early 2000's. Honestly haven't gone since Richie left. Love Jon's solo albums. "Santa Fe" off Blaze of Glory has to be one of his best written songs. I've been to acoustic solo shows for the Destination Anywhere tour... So close I could touch him the whole show and his voice was perfect. No backing tracks at all. I feel His voice and the band's music were at their peak in the 90's with the These Days and Keep the Faith albums. Your clips were from the These Days tour. Met him many times..have to say he's not Mr Personality. But he was very photogenic on stage and quite the flirt on stage. He had a very large stage presence...if he looked at you..you knew it. And of course just gorgeous. Being a New Yorker I got to see him "ALOT" he played everywhere for the Destination tour even a private show at Dave & Busters on Long Island.

Also sir. I hope you include David Bryan and Richie Sambora on future videos, especially David. Probably they are not frontmen but they are singers too. Hehehe. David is also an Ace card on the band. He He contributed as I believe on "In these arms" a golden song that was overshadowed by Bed of Roses in track listing. To be honest he has an awesome voice sir, you can appreciate it more when he sings Wanted Dead or Alive and In These Arms alone. I hope the spotlight will shine for him.

Thanks for mentioning Richie; he and Jon are hand in glove. Jon has always been under such pressure with carrying the band; the contracts are with him alone and he has a real sense of obligation to the band and all of the support staff. If Jon doesn't perform, a lot of people will do without and that really weighs on him. He's had that financial obligation from a young age and has been brilliant. Also...a big part of Richie leaving had to do with Heather Locklear's descent into addiction and being there for their daughter Ava. Of course it was a blow to Jon because he and Richie were musical partners.

I love everything about JBJ. Great voice back then. Great man. Humble, Kind. And very Focused. My Fav Band. Jon is a Pisces and that should tell you what he is like as a person. I'm 10 yrs older then him minus 4 days. We are a lot alike in many ways. including being very loyal. I wish I had got to see him live back in the 90s. But I have never got to see the band. Now he doesn't play much with them, since the Pandemic. He has been doing very small shows. And private ones. Even now I want to see him just once before he stops doing any. He was just here where I live but for a surprise show .His Son Jesse was here to promoting the wine Hampton Water. Jon played a show On the 18th hole at the Albersons Boise Open. I was so upset .Waiting almost 40 yrs and couldnt even get one of my CDs Autographed.

I started on music because years ago, I saw a Bon Jovi concert, Rock in Rio in 1990! When I saw the double Jersey Star arm guitar and the Kramer Jersey Star cherry, the connection between Jon, Richie, Tico, David and Alec (on those days), their connection and with all the people out there, how he sang I'd die for You and Born to be my baby, Tokyo Road, all that stuff... Man, that just blew my mind!! So being honest Ken, I try to watch your videos as much as I can but you know, I really enjoyed this One!! I'm 21 years old but watching those live concerts, I recorded my teen aged years! OMG, amazing!! Thanks for sharing man!! Blessings and greetings from Mexico!!

@@kentamplin Well Jon & Richie had the required chemistry to create magic. Sadly the band turned into being about Jon only 2013. Until the year 1995 these days and 2000 Crush . The band was still a band. Until the album these days we could hear the musical contribution of everyone. Later none barely. Harmonies in the song something for the pain Jon & richie were just great on the record ..they even played the song marvelously well during the circle tour like busking during a live show David bryan on the accordeon. Moreover i ask myself ..i wonder it appears to me that the singer and artist Jon was scared of being forgotten before thr pandemic like he was aiming for a higher high touring extensively and that took a toll on his vocals letting one his main vocal back up go away(richie) was detrimental to his lead vocals. Confinement proved that jon had to rest his vocals to get better .Until now everett bradley , phil x, john shanks vocals are not enough to compensate for the backing vocals of richie. Richie's part are not a roar like it use to on wanted dead or alive by phil x.

I was a Bon Jovi tragic back in the day. Saw them on the New Jersey, Keep the Faith, These Days, and the Lost Highway tours. Richie leaving the band was the beginning of the end. Listening to the songs they're putting out now makes us all realise just how much Richie contributed musically and lyrically to the band. The way they were able to adapt from the glam rock of the 80s to the 90s and into the early 2000s is really special. Bon Jovi didn't get the credit they deserved because the industry and the media used to focus too much on Jon's looks. Jon has a very recognisable voice. Would love to see you do something on Richie.
