Okay, I am not a fan of "things from the deep" type stories but that's just a personal preference. However, I like your voice and narration so much I will even listen to these stories as long as you're reading them!

I looked it up. Because sperm whales have teeth, they're more closely related to dolphins and porpoises, but they're considered to be in their own class, sort of like belugas.

Okay, I got hung up on sperm whales not being whales somehow. All I could find was possibly the distinction between filter feeding or baleen whales versus toothed whales, of which the sperm whale is one of the latter. I am not a nerd of any kind, and am lucky I can tie my own shoes... Well, I stupidly looked up how big octopi can get after reading about the differences between the lusca and the kraken, and learned that they get a LOT bigger than I realized, and the biggest species lives where I am. Thalassophobia intensifies...😟

LOL - when I read the story, the only thing I was thinking was that perhaps it was a member of the dolphin family or something like that, but I honestly don't know.

Being at sea you see and hear many strange and remarkable things. When I was sleeping, sometimes I would wake up to whale calls (I slept below water line). It was so incredible and beautiful! I've seen whales do many cool things too, like bubble net feeding and when they sleep or rest it's called "logging"- they look literally exactly like a massive log floating on the surface. One night we had to stop our ship a few times bc our ship was surrounded by Humpback whales and it was at the same time as the Northern Lights were going crazy and we could see the Persied Meteor shower too. It was incredible! I always wondered if all that activity with the lights and meteors did something to the whales which made them congregate, socialize, float around and block our ship lol 🐳🌟⚓🚢 I usually slept in the fo'c'sle (pronounced "folk-sull", forward ship, right under the bow) and every time our anchor was dropped or being brought back up it made the most awful grinding noise which vibrated my little bunk and walls lmao good luck getting back to sleep after that! 😂 I really love these stories Brian! They take me back to my days at sea and I miss it so much ❤😊 💙❤💜

@@dark_night_tales I do! I've seen the Southern Cross and that Green Flash when the sun slips beneath the horizon by the equator. It's really fast and subtle and nothing like what you see in 'Pirates of the Caribbean' lol but it's really cool nonetheless. About one week prior to boarding the ship in Costa Rica, the Chief Mate of my ship spotted debris in the water off to starboard right off the bow in almost complete darkness so he shines the spotlight and saw two men clinging to coolers, wood, debris etc., turned out to be a father and his young son (early 20s late teens). They had been fishing with another father/son duo when their small boat capsized. That father ended up drowning and that mans son survived but drank seawater accidentally (its hard not to when treading water for days on end) and slowly went mad. He swam off into the distance seeing "land". Sharks took him not long after leaving the remaining father/son survivors. That evening they prayed to God for a rescue and gave their goodbyes to one another and fully accepted that they wouldn't make it through the night. So around 2a or 3a is when my ship~ the MV Lindblad and National Geographic Sea Lion (my beloved sea vessel ❤) came upon them when Chief Mate Jodie was at the helm in the bridge and saw them floating with febris at the corner of his eye in complete blackness. They took them aboard and nursed them best as they could (quarantined in a spare passengers cabin) with our ships doctor tending to them until authorities could come scoop them up. That was one of the craziest things that happened ever! I mean, the men even said their goodbyes and "I love yous" and just at the last possible moment did they get saved! I could go on and on and on 😂 crazy stuff though...craziness on the high seas! 😊🚢❤

BTW-do we, as your loyal long-time listeners have a catchy name we can use to refer to ourselves and others of our ilk? You know, 'The Darklings', 'The Nighty-Nights', or maybe the 'Trecherous Tales'? 🤣🤣 Those of us who have been onboard since the beginning deserve a catchy name! (It could just possibly be me however 🤪) Thank you in advance for the consideration! 😂🤯

The sperm whale is a whale. What does the author mean?
@dark_night_tales
@dark_night_tales 4 месяца назад
I think they were saying that it might be technically classified as a different species, like how an Orca is not really a whale, but is classified as a part of the dolphin family. I think it was just a mistake, though.
