As a 6th generation Floridian, this story hits way to close to home. We had lots of hurricane partys. Our house was built for them. Double poured concrete block and on high ground. We used airboats to get around. Thanks for sharing this wonderful story. Blessings to you and your family. Tennessee USA

Thanks! Yeah, our house is all block construction and built to hurricane code. It's a good thing, too, considering how devastating Hurricane Ian was last year! There are so many old Florida houses down here still, though, and I cringe for them every time a big storm comes around...

Oh man, stay in the jeep, and use the horn! I used to drive around in bad weather in my jeep, looking for people to save, it's a jeep thing, I guess.

Yeah, I was part of a Jeep club down here that did volunteer work like this. I can't tell you how many times I've pulled people's cars out of mud when they veered slightly off the road. Modern SUVs are great and comfortable vehicles, but they're generally not made for any sort of off-pavement driving. There are really only a handful of production vehicles made today that I'd trust to those conditions.

I can imagine. While I've never seen hurricane weather, the storms here can be pretty tense. My town doesn't have many storm drains so our roads become dangerously flooded. Once while walking back from Walmart on a rainy morning, the crosswalk was submerged so much that I had to tread across 3 feet of deep water in my socks and shoes, it was like walking through a lagoon.@@dark_night_tales

Jalousie windows are extremely common in south Florida homes (especially older homes). They're made of a bunch of slats of glass that all pivot to open when a crank is turned.

I love the story...but...i dont like how much time he spends on descriptive narration. Of course you need some description,but not to much. I'm like come on come on get on with it, the waiting is killing me....but thats just me ...
