I think the main advantage of crossbows was the low entry cost. To use a bow effectively your average peasant would have to train for years but a crossbow just needs you to have fingers.

Crossbows are easy to use, bows are very difficult to master, so bows are basically easy to use but a bit worse versions of bows that are perfect for armies because they required minimal training

Because of their primitive make of a trigger that was the limiting factor on how strong a crossbow could be made. Because the pressure would be so great that you couldn't actually pull the trigger anymore

The repeating shot ability artificers can put on crossbows resolves that problem, not to mention you can have an armblade on the other hand to cover you when you need to reload.

Historically, crossbows were popular amongst armies and replaced bows because while it took time to train someone to be a proper archer, a crossbow was much easier to teach someone to use effectively. So where it takes a long time to produce a handful of archers, you could already have entire groups of crossbow wielders

In risen (it might just be risen 1 or all of them) there is cursor so you can see where you're shooting but for the crossbow it doesn't have that so you don't know where you're shooting (i never use crossbows for that reason) but in any other game i use crossbows unless i get a bow that's better

I mean, the main benefit of a crossbow is that you only have to pull it back once for each shot and are set, while with the bow you have to pull and hold it, which takes a lot more srrength.

This is why we practice proper trigger safety kids. Don't even have your finger on the trigger unless you intend to shoot.

Average bow fan vs average crossbow enjoyer

Technically speaking they are on par. The long bow for well trained archers as well its incredibly effective at killing people. The crossbow as its easy to train people in so you could give a farmer one and give him a few days to a day's worth of training with it and he could be an effective killing machine just like your trained archer.

You should load the bolt after and you should consider an arbalest if you worry about speed and dont have the back muscles for a longbow alternativly a shortbow is good if you dont like the crank and arent weak as shit not much can out fire a bow (unincluding blowback ballistics)

Pros about a crossbow: Anyone can use it. Packs a punch. Not the most expensive equipment. Much more dexterous. Cons about a crossbow: To achieve the same power as a warbow, the string needs more effort to be pulled (by design). Large as hell. Not the cheapest equipment. Anyone can use it against you.

People are unaware that it takes more than a touch to pull a trigger. It takes practice and technique to pull the trigger and not pull your aim off the target.

So real talk, the reason why crossbows are vastly better than longbows for raising an army is the fact that while a master Bowman can fire off 5 to 8 arrows in the time that it takes a crossbowmen to fire too, crossbowmen can reach the same level of accuracy as the master Bowman in just a few weeks of training, Rather than the years or even decades it takes to train a Bowman to that level of proficiency.

IRL, crossbows are the best ranged weapon for its time for the average person. The reason is simple, it only takes some strength to load it, but requires little skill to use. To use a bow properly, it takes many many years, to consistently hit what your aiming at takes even longer, decades typically. English longbowmen were the best of the best and were trained since birth... and can be killed by a well placed shot by a peasant with a crossbow with only 1 year of training. A well trained bowmen will beat a crossbow any day though, but they cost so much more due to the amount of training it requires. In the end, it all depends on what you need though. Do you need to quickly build an army? Crossbows. Do you have a long time to build one? Bowmen. Of course, even better, have a mix, put the bowmen further back and have the crossbows up front to protect said bowmen and provide accurate short range fire, while the bowmen provide longer range fire. Would be pretty cool to see this in DND ngl.

game perspective: yes. this is true history perspective: crossbow is 1000 times better because everyone can use it semi effectively

Bows are overall the way beter weapon but for armies crossbows are allot easyer too use and basiclly anybody can use em cuz you can learn how too use em in a week and dont need technique

Loading a bow does not take three seconds and average long Bowman now this was a long bow so take longer to load ready a shot for an experienced person who’s been training all of their life they would be able to get six shots off in a minute now six shots off in three seconds and six shots a minute that’s like perfect conditions they have the arrows ready at the every second they have everything prepared there’s no enemies so the bridge time would be like three arrows in a minute or another words not six arrows in three seconds and a crossbow and he’ll take about that long to load a bolt of course I don’t know anything about crossbows I just know stuff about long bows and bows and stuff like that however most of my knowledge still went into to guns
