The following is a breakdown of some main advantages for each unit, as compared with the other. Only the advantages are listed. TS100's advantages over TS80: - More powerful than the newer TS80, but only really noticeable on extreme jobs. If you do a lot of fat wires on heavy connectors, then this should matter to you. Also heats up much faster. - Cheaper price now that the new one took it's price-point. - Sturdier and more traditionally styled power socket. Will last longer under heavy use... The socket is also compatible with many laptop power bricks that can be had for a song at your local recycling centre, or thrift shop. It would also be quite easy to adapt or build your own cable adapters for use with different power sources. This counts a lot toward versatility when going off-grid with LiPo packs, or to plug into your car's lighter socket. - Available accessories include more tip choices and color casings. It is probable that tip prices will be discounted, like the main body. So, expect even better pricing, eventually. TS80's advantages over TS100: - All-metal casing, with optional silicone finger grip. - Slightly shorter finger to tip distance gives a bit more precision control for delicate jobs. (Both units are better at this than most others.) - Easier to hold because the body is round, just like most professional irons. This is convenient if using a tip that can vary it's tip to surface contact area when you turn it. Which includes all but the conical tips, really. (Of course, this can be done on the TS100 by rotating the hot tip with pliers... but it is not as easy.) - Already comes with a power supply unit. Also conveniently plugs into other USB-C power sources, like newer, top of the line power banks. Summary: Both are excellent tools for most users. Either one is an awesome acquisition as a first iron, but I would not even consider an "upgrade" from a TS100 to the prettier TS80 until the older one failed, and USB-C power banks got a lot cheaper! That being said, I'm a cheap bastard anyway, so the TS100 would still be my preferred model for a first purchase because of its lower price, superior versatility in power sources, and more powerful output.

Not to mention, the tips for the TS100 are cheaper. And call me superficial, but I like the optional blue color. :)

I have the exact same opinion, the TS80 is a fantastic solder iron no doubt, but expensive, and a bit more limited when compared with the TS100. And ... it will struggle on heavy gauges of course. Also, although the TS100 is more powerful we must remember that powering the TS100 from a battery is also viable. Let's not forget that these irons are controlled with PID loops and therefore the TS100 even if more powerful will have a lower duty cycle and faster adjustment when soldering therefore the 60W rating will be optimized and therefore the power draw from the battery does not compare proportionally with the 24W TS100. That is the TS100 is not going to be using 60/24 more energy then the TS80. Of course it depends on the situation since Thermal balance will be key to measure the energy balance between both solder irons.

Nice review. I'm going to go with the TS100 for it's power at 64W rather than portability of the TS80. I do like the ergonomics of the TS80 button wise though. Both great products but price point and power wise I think the TS100 will be my choice. Thank you for taking the time to make such a GREAT vidieo review. *Note - I wish my girlfriend was as "jazzed" about this kinda stuff as you were.

Thank you so much for doing such a helpful and useful video. I have been trying to decide which to purchase. I ended up getting the t100, I would have bought the t80 if it had higher wattage and old tips.

shwa that's the better choice ! Because the t100 you can use to 24v but at the t80 you can use from 9v to max. 13volts! ( don't go over 13volts ! Better go max. 12volts ! ) You can upgrade it to the custom firmware the t100 if you want that's handle the heat and power banks better ! Ts100 65w ! Ts80 35w ! I researched and My opinion is that the ts100 is the better choice because you can use with upgrade kit hakko solder tip's ! And I think the ts100 is more power full ! Best regards,

Useful review! I like the body of the 80, and the idea of it, but the quick change tips are hard to find and totally unique. So you’re locked into that supply chain. I’m also unsure if quickcharge 3 will be around forever with USB PD being the favored format for USB C. Also a little concerned with the fragility of the connector. If they had more tips available and could switch to USB PD, it seems perfect. But otherwise as a tool, it seems like the 100 is a safer long term bet-more future proof and robust connector and power source, common tips that are compatible with Hakko, and a bit cheaper. The plastic case is a really shame, that’s about it. Note that there are usb power banks that have both quick charge and DC barrel output-I have one of those, so I can use either of these on it directly.

Hi!. The sensor and the resistance of the tip of the ts80, follows the standard t12 with sensor in series the resistance or the standard of the weller rt1, with thermocouple in parallel with the heating resistance ?.

I currently have Velleman VTSS30 - bought for under 50 EUR, which has served me well. However, sometimes I felt a bit clumsy when soldering smaller circuits. Then I bought a cheap USB soldering pen. I did not have any expectations, considering it cost just 5 USD, but I was surprised to discover I enjoyed using it. It's so easy to grab it from a drawer, unlike the Velleman which has to be stored somewhere when I'm not using it. My hand coordination feels so much better with the USB pen. But sometimes it's too weak and I would like to replace it with something small and a bit more powerful. So I hoped something like Pinecil or TS100 would be great... alas, it has a longer and heavier tip, and tips are more expensive than for other soldering irons. Come on, manufacturers, please create a solid portable soldering pen with simple and short and cheap tips.

The TS80 is shorter, easier to exchange, has lower mass less heat loss. It’s an upgrade to the TS100.

I don't think the TS80 was supposed to surpass TS100, but to be a lower-power variant of it, hence the lower number
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 4 года назад
@@SomeAngryGuy1997 It's essentially a TS100 with USB-C but USB-C Power Delivery isn't enough to reach the same wattage. It's every bit as good up until you hit that limit. I don't think they set out to make lower-power variant though that's what we ended up with. :(
