Recap of all the news since TVS Motors of India purchased Norton Motorcycles in April 2020 - and what the future might hold for them.
I also go through how many bikes I think Norton might need to sell to get back their £124 million investment in the company.

Hello from India... TVS may devise a strategy to bring smaller engine motorcycles like 300, 400, 600 cc, and aim for the Indian market which have shown quite a shift from regular commuter motorcycles to bigger engines. Infact Triumph and HD have teamed up with Indian motorcycle co.s to bring out 400 & 440 cc motorcycles respectively. Triumph Speed 400 has been widely accepted and is showing some good sales. TVS may also be inline with such plans. Let's wait and watach. PS: I ride 2014 Royal Enfield Classic 350😊

TVS introduced the low growlling racer's in india, it's the best india got. They took over Norton cus when it comes to haevy bikes RE is like a cult in India. You thinking of a retro bike might name 2-3 brands, india it's only RE. Breaking that monopoly requires a myth as old as RE. Norton serves that purpose well. @@John900C

TVS has purchased the brand name along with this factory in UK. Probably they will manufacture Norton bikes in India at a much lower cost and can be sold in their sales outlets in India and overseas. To break even they may have to augment sales by producing bikes in different segments.
@NortonUnofficial
@NortonUnofficial 9 месяцев назад
Thank you for your comment. They just built a brand new factory in the UK with capacity to manufacture 8000 bikes per year. So I think they are committed to building bikes here for the foreseeable future. If sales increase or it is not cost effective, then yes I could see some bikes being built in India. For now, I think they aim to be different from other brands by being “built in Britain”. We will see. Greetings from Wales!

Would love to see the 961 in the states. My first bike at 15 1/2 years old was an 850 commando.(you could get a full motorcycle license at 15 1/2) Now at 67 years old I still think its one of the best looking bikes ever. They did such a good job at keeping that look that I could not resist buying one. Expensive for the performance level, yes. But at this point in my life I don't need a bike with 200 HP. I do wish they kept the 360 degree crank and a long stroke for the original sound. A proper balance shaft would fix the vibes. BRING IT !!

Thank you for your comments. Greetings from Wales! I’d love to have a 750 or an 850 in the garage one day to go with my 961. There are a few 961’s kicking about in the US, sold under the previous owners. I personally believe the new Norton owners need to expand their horizons beyond the UK too and make a bid to re-enter the US market. The UK alone is certainly not a big enough market to sustain them.

@@NortonUnofficialGarner's Norton burned both dealers and owners in the U.S. Norton didn't supply bikes to the dealers like they needed to for down payments and stuck the dealers with the warranty repairs. Many of those dealers were driven out of business. TVS has done more talking than building bikes and certainly will have to do a lot to convince U.S. dealers still around to do it again.

I have recently bought the new Commando 961 SP. Issue for export is they are not homologated to Euro 5. For one, the exhaust note is 106db as standard. Think the max is 80db for Euro 5. So they would have to change this for export outside UK for a start. The bike has many changes from the Garner bike. From what i've seen in VT of Garner Nortons. The bike sounds and looks the dogs bollocks. No question about that. A real head and body turner. Nice touches too with every bolt and fastener being stainless steel. Brembo and Ohlins etc. Even the oil drain bolts are different from Garner bikes. Swing arm and engine changes. Some parts are same. Key barrell, mirrors, seat, headlight, ECU, body parts, indicators, fenders etc. To date, bike has not missed a beat. No leaks, zero engine problems etc. Yes the bike is vibey but for me that's part of the appeal. It sticks to the road like a new born monkey after i set up the suspension. When you turn it in it hold the line amazingly well. Full 2 year warranty with the bike. No quibble too. So far, i cannot fault Norton. I have dealt with both a dealer and the Factory and the customer service has been exceptional. Not for everyone, but i'm loving it 👍

Great video and nicely put together. We should also consider the current running deficit (profit on ongoing sales vs the running of the factory/organsiation), as I doubt they are breaking even, so over time that investment goes up, month by month. Add to this this cost of opportunity (what could you have done with the money if you had not 'invested' it in Norton) and the picture does not look particularly pretty. Sales wise, I think many will see a Norton as their 2nd or 3rd bike and not a primary bike, while Norton are asking a significant premium for their 'brand'. You only have to look at the costs of their bikes, the V4 being the most extreme example, along with their clothing line, where pricing has alienated what I believe is their key demographic. I'd love to understand where they see their future, what their key demographic is and how this Investment will be recouped in a reasonable time scale. I suspect it won't be via their current range of bikes, their clothing line or electric, but in smaller capacity bikes. Lets see!

I sold my 1961 Dominator in part exchange for a new 1972 Commando roadster, apart from the extra power, I preferred the Domi. The Commando had resilient rubber swinging arm movement that made in spring in the middle, resulting a lack of faith in the handling. The fibre glass petrol tank leaked from day one and couldn't be corrected, a dissappointing experience. The cost of the new range is rediculous, my last bike was a Suzuki gixxer, the UK purchase price is £12,699 for the 1000, less than a third the price from a stable manufacturer, and no spares or parts issues, for me it's a no brainer.

I wish Norton all the best, but they will always be a niche manufacturer because of the the limited bike range and the price. One thing against them is perhaps a lack of trust in Norton from the buying public, there have been too many false starts and failures in recent times for many people to feel confident about Norton's future.

Thanks for your comment. I’ve been invited to the factory for a tour and to do some filming, I’m going to ask if they plan to become more mainstream or if the strategy is to continue their niche of a more luxury brand. I suspect the answer (if they give one) will be the latter. It will take time to rebuild trust. Time, and delivering quality bikes that people want to ride. Cheers, and ride safe.

Look at the way Royal Enfield have pretty well cornered the market for the sale of the more Classic look Brit bike, I'm surprised Norton didn't do something similar..I'm thinking of the Dominator series bikes of the fifties/sixties. It seems to me reintroducing the Dommie' would have a better sales potential than some super bike costing 40+ grand. which will probably be an ornament in some rich guys garage...The 88 and 99 had a great reputation, especially for the handling. So! with a bit of modern metallurgy, changes in the firing order stick the whole thing into a featherbed...(that are still made for triton enthusiasts )....modernise the suspension, allow for modern, larger tyres and Norton just may have a bike that will appeal to the old 'Rocker' and newbe riders.....like Enfield have already done in fact....

Here’s my thoughts on why Norton’s sales are low 1. It’s a niche product, it really only appeals to riders wanting a retro machine, and that’s not 100% of the motorcycle buying population. 2. They are asking £17000 pounds for the bike, there’s a finite number of motorcyclists willing to pay 17k for a motorcycle. 3. They have very stiff competition in the retro market, Triumph, Kawasaki etc, stiff competition not only on price but also quality. 4. They are focusing on the 961 as their “volume” bike, sadly it doesn’t have a great engine, it suffers from vibration and doesn’t get anywhere near class leading power (and yes, I have ridden one, in fact I’ve ridden 3, I was underwhelmed). But I still think the future is bright for Norton, TVS have big pockets and I’m pretty certain they will be developing light and middleweight motorcycles in the relatively near future that will lend themselves to mass production and will relatively quickly bring them a return on their investment. P.S. I would also not be entirely surprised to see them rebrand some of their existing lightweight machines as Norton’s in the Asian markets.

Where I'm located - Cambodia - they're a close second to RE in the huge motorized rickshaw market, and that's indicative of all ASEAN countries. From figures I've seen, TVS has sold 7656 three-wheelers since commencing operations 8 years ago, mainly in the capital, and retail pricing is about USD$3000 per unit; now, a 20% profit margin is realistic, so I'd estimate $4.6 million! Norton has committed to high-end motorcycles. I really don't understand why they have taken this approach. I think that to afford these machines, you firstly have got to be a Norton enthusiast and to be fully aware of the history and pedigree, which automatically suggests older riders. The price is eye-wateringly high. I would think that younger riders would invest in more familiar names that they recognised and at a more financially attractive price. When Japanese manufacturers entered the UK market, it was with smaller affordable, pleasing to the eye motorcycles, that caught on very quickly. Invest in the future. Learn from the past. I seriously do wish Norton every success in what they want to achieve.

India has a very big retro bike market and very nascent mid capacity market. With increasing income and increasing number of 300cc bikes(still a big bike for most of our buyers), more manufacturers are trying to get into the mid capacity market. TVS already has a product there but what it lacks is a retro bike. See, in India Royal enfield dominates the market and every other manufacturer who has tried to challenge it has failed so far and that includes Honda, Jawa(owned by another Indian company Mahindra). So TVS won't be trying to do it themselves, but very likely try and launch a small capacity retro with the Norton brand. At India's scale this could potentially be a massive volume generator while also filling a product gap in TVS's folio. As long as Norton bikes are reliable and can provide good service(TVS will have them covered here), there is a potential success story here.

Thank you, just liked it 😊. However, your calculation is way too simple.. it says the new owners had to sell 62000 bikes to return the investment - already in first year. That is not how it works. I suggest to divide that with 7-8 (years) instead of 1, and you are closer to reality. There are more things here, like revenues from spares, service, merchandise, missing in your calculation. Also, some of that investment is real estate, tools, etc. I think the new owners have a fair chance and wish them success. I will strongly consider to buy a new Commando, once the dealership and service is secured and guaranteed. Much of sales depend on good channel, and Triumph sucks in that matter, a great opportunity for Norton.
@NortonUnofficial

Thank you for your comments. Yes, I agree it was a simple calculation, just to give an idea that they need to be selling way more bikes than they are currently in order to get their investment back. You make valid points about spares, service, etc, but even with this I just can't see them making their money back any time soon. I hope TVS stay invested in the brand for a long time, and I think they will need to if they ever want to make money. Unless this is a kind of "halo" product, or vanity project for them. Cheers, thanks again.

There's nothing any of us can think of that TVS haven't thought of already. I wouldn't worry about UK domestic sales. The bulk of new Nortons will be sold in India, Thailand and elsewhere. Yes, expensive premium machines. Norton have just opened a franchise in a Porsche dealership near me in Prestbury, Cheshire. This is a millionaire's village inhabited by Premier League footballers, entrepreneurs and posers. I'm not sure that they will see a profit of £2000 per sale, given the low volumes and higher production costs of a UK plant as compared to India. The brand alone will have a goodwill value on their books, and hopefully there will be further models with higher volume sales at some point. It's going to be a crowded market though, as the UK motorcyclist demographics continue to waste away high-end buyers, with few new entrants.

Thanks for your comment. I was trying to estimate profit based on what I see Triumph make. A sad reflection of the state of this country. In my lifetime (75 years) I have witnessed the drastic reduction in our manufacturing industries. When I was a kid we made cars, motorcycles, ships, trains, aircraft, electronics, etc, etc. Now the small amount of manufacturing left is owned by foreign companies. I don’t like getting into politics but we can only blame our politicians (with some help from the unions) and the failure of them to invest in failing companies like the French and Germans. If I was a young man I would be very worried about my future job prospects. You may not wish to publish these comments but at least it helps me to get them off my chest.

They will plan to run at a loss for a few years. Prob have a few bikes in r&d. They need halo products first to build aspirational appeal to the brand. Simple. They are too expensive. The Commando looks brilliant and has the name on the tank, but it’s a twin with no frills and being purely objective, there are a lot of motorcycles out there which are technically superior and a lot cheaper. Would I like a Commando yes I would but I am of the era that remembers them as main stream, a lot of younger riders won’t buy them because they are viewed as old means bikes. Good luck Norton.

You build something, anything in Britain, this is what you get. Not only the sort of wages we all expect but layer upon layer of suffocating bureaucracy and H&S naysayers. Respect to TVS for even attempting it, I'm sure the prices will come down in future, but it's never going to be a Royal Enfield. Just look at how Triumph has ended up. Apparently the new boss of TVS/Norton says that TVS has never sold or closed down a company it has purchased, let's hope this continues to be the case !.. While the V4 bikes are pretty prohibitively expensive for most motorcyclists, the base price for the 961 Commando variants (£17000.00) compares pretty favourably with bikes from other premium motorcycle brands like BMW and Ducati etc.. If I were Norton I'd be offering the V4 range as a extra-premium 'bespoke' bike (a bit like Morgan cars) while concentrating hard on promoting the 961 Commando range and looking to create a lower priced range (something akin to the Royal Enfield 650 twins) It would be fantastic if this more affordable Norton range were manufactured in the UK but realistically we know that they'd be made in India.. All TVS needs to do is get together with the likes of Norton Colorado and remake a REAL retro Commando with all the upgrades that several diehard Norton lovers have developed over the last 35 or so years. It doesn't need a 100 hp to compete with any other bike, the proper set up 850 (828) Commando was in a class of it's own, It was smooth, light, flat torque curve, beautiful sound and most of all, Character...It was one of the most beautiful bikes ever made, which, I'm afraid the 961 isn't. The 961, to me is like when some aspiring musician takes a "goat" classic and tries to "jazz it up a bit", only to make the original look even better. The "character" of a "proper set up" old Commando came out when experiencing how pleasant they were when just loafing along on medium speed twisty mountain/canyon roads, they were a lot of fun going balls to the wall, too, but they are a bit outclassed today.

They are really up against it in the UK, the current cost of living is effecting most of us, so the potential client base who don't have pots in reserve but could arrange finance etc are not spending, so you are left with the so called super rich who like toys, well all of the Norton range are pretty much an unknown quantity compared to Triumph and Ducati, so no matter how rich you are do you want to buy something that in recent years has had a poor reputation for build quality, reliability and let's not mention customer service ? The Norton name has suffered massively over the years and not just by Garner, so again it's off putting. For decades in the UK the Chinese were beaten with the "cheap crap" stick, it's what happens with an emerging manufacturing economy using cheaper labour, India are in the same situation as China were years ago, so this could also be off putting. Just my thoughts.

They won't be making a return on investment with those halo bikes, I mean that's almost £10k more than an MV Brutale, and I know which I'd rather have! They'll be going for brand expansion, so, smaller capacity, mass market Nortons made in India, just like the recent BSA revival and of course, Royal Enfield. A British manufacturing and technical base gives them global credibility, just like Royal Enfield, and maintains he traditional heritage connection. One new Norton I did quite like the look of was that Atlas, maybe they could look at that. It's good to have all these old British bike names back in the market, so far it's, Triumph, BSA, Royal Enfield, now Norton again, Brough Superior even Ariel knock out the odd bike, so, how about somebody bringing back the daddy of them all, Vincent!

Your best bet is to know just how much recouped from the tax dept in depreciation of assets.. It would be not unusual to find that after those three years the tax dept would have refunded them 50% of the money they've spent.. If you don't know it kind of works like this.. The company buys a spanner for one pound, tax dept notes it and the next year that spanner on the balance sheet is only worth 80p so the tax dept refunds them 20p and so it goes on.. The company may make say 50 thousand profit on selling bikes, they will pay tax on that but with depreciation of assets they may get 10 million back.. Doom and gloom pish. I bought one and you are wrong when you say the bike is not as good as the price suggests. Is this an opinion from owneship or just from watching bloggers green with envy? The bike is well built and i've had zero issues.

I tried a 961 for a day and couldn't get on with it, the other bikes in the range are way out of my budget, so I ended up getting a Rocket 3 GT and I couldn't be happier.

@@cams2575 Let’s be honest, the £17k price tag is not even that expensive compared to many bikes/brands nowadays. BMW, Harley, DUCATI, Triumph to name but a few, all have more expensive bikes in their range The trouble is, the 961 is a bike that hardly anyone wants. There’s no market for it. It’s not 1970 anymore. To anyone under 50 the Norton name means diddly squat, and to the few that it did the last 10 years or so with Garner ruined that. It’s black & white photographs on a wall. When you read the Norton owners forum, not even they think it’s that good and they aren’t buying them. So it’s not envy, nor doom & gloom pish, if anything your opinion matters less because you bought one so cannot see the blindingly obvious. It’s like trying to bring back cassette tapes in a Smartphone age.

Speaking for the masses I see. Self apointed critic with all the facts to hand? So far, the blinding obvious is a business that has invested massively, built a new factory, created new employment in the UK and got bikes over the line. I applaud that. Some don't and they'll never be happy or pleased. Relishing in the hope of failure of others. Norton owners I know like the new bike. Never heard a negative comment with all bikers i've met with mine. Don't believe everything you read!

First of all I've owned numerous bikes in the pass including the original jpn norton comando ,now here is the thing grip what ever the new comando looks awesome but boy is it a lump big very big for a para twin cylinder bike again it's wide very wide around its gurth wye The foot controls stick out miles making feel braod around the beam wye its a twin The placement of the brake master cylinder isn't very neat or tidy looks like it's been sorted by some one in a shed like a poor custom job The key is just a key no logo no keyless ignition on this one compare this to a BMW Again the foot controls your not using the toe of your foot wear your using you hole soul on the brake lever So again I recall the old comando with its passenger seat and rear foot pegs not on this sport touring motorcycle will you be shearing your riding experience Such a shame on a premium motorcycle with a price tag of £17,000 but it does bring back memories £8/9000 you could buy the reel thing

WOW! Reading these comments, I'd say it was 75-80% Indian trolls. They will ruin the name, and before you know it, they'll be a Slovakian made electric scooter with a Chinese-made Norton badge on it. What a sad day for Britain.
