As it turned out, this was the only time that Hugh O'Brian appeared as a panelist on WHAT'S MY LINE? - as well as being his first time on the show. He would return as Mystery Guest 3 times: on 24 December 1961, on 30 January 1966, and on 27 August 1967 (the next-to-last episode of WML? aired on CBS).

The “real” Roger Maris? Really Bennett?

The fact that Cerf says, "I met the real Roger" is quite telling and dismissive of the guest.

Synchotron The Roger Maris "gag" began a few episodes back. They've clearly found someone with the same name to labour the gag. Maybe he should've said 'the more famous Roger' but hey, It's all just fun really. Cerf's a nice guy.

Amazingly, I was able to find stuff on the non-baseball Maris. (I mean, after the early 60s.) Anyway, he was mostly known as Bud, and was originally from Chicago, but he and his family moved to Florida early on. Other than his being in the Navy (Korean War), he basically never left. Had (two) wives, some kids, and ongoing boating and fishing concerns for the rest of his life. Died in 2012. Obit: www.reesefuneral.com/obituaries/Roger-Maris/#!/Obituary

Ironically, baseball's Roger Maris became the owner of Budweiser beer distributors in Florida after his playing career ended. His final stop in the majors was the St. Louis Cardinals, owned by Gussie Busch who also owned Anheuser-Busch. When Maris announced his retirement, Busch got him started in the beer business.

How could they get a NO for the fishing boat captain about "any animals involved"?? How about tons of fish???
@loissimmons6558
@loissimmons6558 6 лет назад
+Lars Rye Jeppesen Unfortunately, WML lacked consistency in this area. Sometimes, for example if asked if something was animal as opposed to vegetable, fish would be an animal. But other times, animal was synonymous with mammal. WML was a place to get entertained, not to get schooled in anything scientific (especially in the field of biology).
@mr.blackhawk142
@mr.blackhawk142 5 лет назад
Fish aren't considered animals, and to the same ignorant CARNIST sheeple, chicken is a vegetable.
@preppysocks209
@preppysocks209 5 лет назад
since he chartered the fishing boat, maybe he only captained the boat and others dealt with the fish? I agree that biology has always been a weak point on this show
@user-ne8lh2vr2t
@user-ne8lh2vr2t Год назад
I agree although I think Daly would consider it such a broad area they wanted to narrow mineral- vegetable-animal products to life with legs or fur and hides if keep it consistant through the years it's fine but hard to do unless they had the same panel for many years at a time.

"The Sounds of The 60s"? Seems a bit premature in 1961... most of the interesting sounds were a few years away. :-) I wonder who was on it...

"Westinghouse Presents: The Sound of the Sixties" aired on NBC on Monday, 9 October 1961, written and produced by Dore Schary, directed by William A. Graham. The TV special featured sketches and songs; among the latter were "Do It Yourself," sung by Art Carney, "If I Loved You," sung by Vic Damone, "Make Someone Happy," sung by Vic Damone and Gogi Grant, "Bless This House," sung by Mahalia Jackson, "Hindemith Sonata" and "Fascinating Rhythm," both played by Andre Previn, "Shenandoah," sung by Gogi Grant and "Yankee Doodle," sung by Tony Randall. Also in the cast were Joyce Jameson, Pat Harrington, Jr., Jackie Joseph, Lennie Weinrib, and Al Shafran.

Hideously ironic that Kilgallen asked him if Lewis was known for singing voice. He started as a singer, but he made a lieutenant of Al Capone mad and he cut Lewis's throat and tongue in November 1927. Capone paid Lewis a settlement so that he got therapy, and Lewis came back as a comic.

I refer constantly to this page when I want to know about guests and panelists on What's My Line? in the John Daly era: game.shows.angelfire.com/whats_my_line.html . And from looking it over, it appears that the answer to your question is no.

romeman01 I'd recommend tv.com's listings over that site, though. That site lists only the shows that are in the guy's collection, with no details. The tv.com listings are detailed beyond anyone's wildest expectations. I don't know who worked on it, but they did a magnificent job. I wish I had started out using that log, but I found one elsewhere on a defunct geocities page that I've been using.

8:07 Arlene at her most devious. While asking a question that would get a 'no' answer, she detects John's reaction and quickly stops without finishing the question so as not to get the 'no'. John Daly lets her get away with it. Her habit of asking a "never-ending" question (of which this is not a good example) while looking for a reaction from John, the audience, or the contestant is irritating and, imo, dishonest. And the worst thing is that she seems to have no shame; she seems to be proud of herself! Martin isn't on hand to disapprove.

Omahabigbill Actually, no, I'm not just assuming that Robert's comment was tongue in cheek-- he's been a valued member of the WML community for quite a long time and I know him far better than to believe for a moment that he was intending any serious criticism here. Even if I didn't know him personally, I would never have read his innocuous comment the way you (and, apparently, one other person) did. Take a deep breath, please.

I have come to find Bennett Cerf a mix of ego centrism, some smart and much stupidity [specially with women's good looks and people that were not in the best of physical shape] telling that man he met the real Roger Maris, like he was some kind of copy. Dorothy was the same, making all sort of stupid questions and much self absorb, not very natural or sincere as in Arlene's case.

unfortunately, the producers never did have that talk with John about flipping over those cards for no reason :( I LOVE this show, but to tell ya the truth, I don't know if I can watch it for a second time cause even though I'm REALLY trying to like John (and right now, as much as he grates on my nerves, it's still hard not to like him), but with his flipping the cards over for absolutely no reason (which ruins the entire show), and for his long winded explanations, it's EXTREMELY EXTREMELY annoying!!! :(
