To be really honest, Liam put it in the best way possible. “It’s supposed to show cars going round in circles and it’s fun” Other than that really good video, will help quite a lot of new and old fans understand the point of F1 but then again they might also disagree.

"F1 is the breeding ground of innovation" that's always I say whenever I was asked 'what's the point?'. Although Im not that into F1, I always enjoy learning something that can be seen and taken for granted (like car parts), have historic significance and innovation that was from "driving fast in circles".

They spend millions just to adjust aero to make it work better for them at a specific track between races. That’s the problem. 99% of the spending has nothing to do with r&d that can be used externally.

Great thought-provoking video. F1 teams are essentially technology centres (F1 is the main part of their activities, but not the only one) and the championship is an engineering competition. That being said, the entertainment value is key in paying for the overheads, thus it is key that F1 is seen as the pinnacle of technology, speed...and drama. The latter being fuelled by events like the wranglings/politics with the FIA and personalities (everyone likes a Mazepin once in a while). As for the techology transfer into our daily drivers, some of it might hold true, but F1 nowadays is at such a high level that most of the technology is not applicable. A prime example is the PR narrative that 18" tyres will help Pirelli develop better road tyres, whereas most road cars will struggle to push 0.5G vs 4-5 G on an F1 car.

One thing I wonder a lot if it still exists, are the various techniques that drivers can use to get an edge on the track. Like the accelerator technique that Senna used in his car, or like Schumacher's insane driveability technique. I wonder if this still exists in Formula 1 or are drivers required to follow the same '' path '' to drive their cars?

For me F1 is the most entertaining due to how the regulations can change to produce a closer field. In most sports the teams at the top stay there whereas in F1 it is always evolving and changing. Williams used to be unbeatable and the Mercedes team as it is now has only been around what 10 years?

The original purpose of F1 and racing in general especially pre-50's was to see who could make the best car and sell them. That's how we do not use Ford Model T's anymore. Whenever I am asked what is the point of racing I ask them, would you rather drive everyday to work and back an early 20's Bugatti (prestigious) or a modern Kia (cheap car). And then tell them the reason that KIA is so much more advanced than the 1920's car and affordable is because of motorsports. Safe, comfortable, fast, luxurious. heck I've even made a whole 1 hour presentation about it when i was studying in university on what is the point of motorsports. I started by showing 2 pictures. The first a Benz motor car which was an engine on top of a cart and the second a Jaguar XJ220, that is what motorsport does for you. It really shocked my audience into wanting to hear more of what I had to say.

I became an F1 fan after the Netflix series. I use to think like you have said that cars just do circles but when I watch the series I realized that F1 is strategy, politics, competition and full of drama among teams and drivers.

I think having rivalries always booststhe entertainment factor: we want to see rivals put each other to the limit. If they care about winning more than anything, then we, in turn, are also more invested in the sport. That's why dominant periods tend to be so boring, because you already know, in general terms, what's going to happen, and when you see the same driver win for the nth time, it doesn't feel special. However, if they have to earn their victories, if they have to push hard, then their victories feel more special, even more so if "your" driver wins against their rival: your "hero" just defeated the "villain".

I think the point of is to provide entertainment through sport. Like how football's true entertainment value is going to your local club and enjoying the atmosphere. Its the same in F1 because you react to those iconic moments. E.g Hamilton and Verstappen CBrBshing into eachother.
