Hmm. I don’t know, I’m not trained or anything, but what if the baby, because it’s always asleep, was created to help you sleep after the trauma you had. To me, it makes sense. Since a trauma causes many things, and nightmare is something that a lot of people have after even a minor trauma. And it would make sense that the baby never ages because it has no other purpose but to sleep and remain small and safe while sleeping. Again, this is just me thinking, I could be really wrong here. I know, because I have trauma and also trouble sleeping, as well as severe nightmares as a kid, that I had to train myself to relax and “become a different person” (this is for lack of better words, not seriously) to sleep. Again, I could be wrong. This is just a theory of mine.

Would that make the baby a fragment?
@vision_walker
@vision_walker 5 лет назад
StrawbunnyMilk not sure, honestly. But it seems by the description of the baby it can’t be classified as an alter because it’s not fully formed (to our knowledge). Could a fragment stay that long for “no reason” though? Any guess is a good guess when it comes to this.

That's actually a very interesting theory! It's like the expression "sleeping like a baby". Babies sleep soundly and don't have a care or worry in the world so it would make sense that a baby would be the perfect alter/fragment to help someone sleep after trauma. I hope Entropy sees your comment so they can discuss it with their therapist!

@thelittleredhairedgirlfrom6527
Literally Why Sounds reasonable. Having an alter whose job is to take over and just put the body to sleep would make sense as something an infant brain would come up with to deal with trauma, the whole, take a nap and hope the problem has resolved itself by the time I wake up thing.

Literally Why.. this makes sense to me. I don’t have DID FYI but from a person who has anxiety and some depression.. I know those days when I literally lay in bed for 2 days (the most amount of days my life will allow me because of work), not shower, not eat, and barely go to the bathroom even. Only when to the point it needs to be done. It doesn’t happen too often these episodes, thankfully. But they happen. I just hide in my room and read or watch movies. But of course the anxiety and guilt is still there afterwards for things I didn’t get done or things I didn’t do. My point is maybe like you said, the baby is a way to just feel nothing. ?

Tw: trauma in infancy . . . . . . . . . . . Yeah. Us. My mother very happily proclaimed she started sleep training at birth. Birth. A baby needs to eat every four hours. She ignored us. From birth. If it was dark. We starved. We rotted in filthy diapers for 12 hours at at a time. We stopped crying after 3 days. Crying loudly. We cried quietly instead. I am Cat. I was our first protector. And I am the darkness. Our first comfort. Infants can be traumatised. Parents can be exceptionally cruel.

So I just started thinking about sleep training. Because as a mom everyone is always saying that at the beginning you're establishing trust, but also it's okay to make mistakes because they won't remember it. Sleep training is one of those big things and such a hot debate and something that was (and sometimes still is, we're going through one of those phases) super hard. The biggest thing is the cry-it-out thing. I have twins and so sleep was really hard especially since my husband couldn't always be home to help me put them to bed. Rocking 2 newborns to sleep is hard, so around 3 month I tried to start sleep training and it did not work, but that meant that I ended up trying the cry-it-out method for a very short period of time because it was torture for me and I couldn't do it. But hey! There won't be any long term effects, right? And I've heard that there are plenty of loving moms that stick through with it and say it worked wonders. But it just makes me think we really don't know enough about any of this and it's okay to coddle your newborn, because they don't understand the world and just need love all the time.

Sometimes system life is just a confusing mess of “well this is a thing. A thing is happening. Why? Don’t know.” Our youngest alter is about 12-14 months? She and Caleb (who was a fragment originally, went dormant when we were in our late teens and then sorta grew into a full alter like 6 months ago) came about at the same time, and Caleb’s been around since the body was roughly that age and we get the same “well how did that happen?” question. It’s never not awkward and uncomfortable to be like “well. Let’s put the information you have together.” 🧡🧡 🧡 Our personal thinking with the “who is the core/original” question, is it’s like dropping a ceramic plate and it breaking into several large pieces - trying to point to one piece and say “that’s the original plate” makes no sense. Each part is just that - a part! One might be the biggest or have the most pieces connected to it, but all are part of the whole picture and needed for the plate to function as a plate, just like all alters are created for a reason and cohesive communication is needed for everyone to function healthily and happily.

Luna Byrd thank you! It was something Jack said during therapy and we’ve definitely adopted it when explaining DID to our singlet friends. Hey there! I have some insight from my therapist who has helped me out with this subject that I thought might help?? I have a baby in our system too, although I believe they are between 2-8 months old :) And when you were saying put two and two together, I was echoing you under my breath, infant trauma unfortunately does happen. I am very sorry you can relate to this. My therapist told me that because babies can not communicate effectively yet, that is most likely where my chronic pain comes from and where my feelings that I can’t put into words come from. (When I am so frustrated or feel trapped but I cannot seem to get the emotion out) If as babies, we weren’t taught how to cope, or our needs went unmet in some way, we dissociate or throw tantrums etc... and then we keep those memories as body memories. The body remembers everything that our minds do not ~~read The Body Keeps The Score Also I will add that your experience could be totally unrelated, I am not a therapist! I respect your autonomy:) just thought I’d share since I’m sort of on a similar path of discovery! Good luck and be well

Another system I've watched has a baby alter, but it was formed later in life around the time of an abortion or miscarriage or similar event. I think maybe this type of baby alter might be like a primal need type of alter. Of a young, safe, peaceful body just sleeping and being content in the world. That's probably all the body wanted and could understand at that age. That baby might not ever age or go past that basic need for sleep. Not even if the system ever gets to the "end goal": whether that means you've found and unlocked all the trapped/dormant alters and stabilised formation of new alters and now have a functioning system with great communication, safety and satisfied head-mates etc (that could be almost as impossible as having a healthy functioning share-housing situation with singular people), or whether you want to fully integrate and manage/"cure" the PTSD etc so you can live a functional life. Last night on Australian TV, there was a story about a woman with 2500 alters (I think they included every fragment she had ever had in her 49 years of life). Nobody believed or listened to her when the trauma was occurring, but finally she had the very detailed written and verbal testimony of at least 6 alters taken seriously in court to prosecute her abuser. It also helped that there were extensive medical records of the physical trauma the body had endured to prove everything they were saying is true (which is unfortunately an issue even for singular people facing trauma). She called them her Army. So powerful and brave, spending her life studying to help others like her.

We have a baby. She was the reason why I found out concretely I had DId. When I was going to therapy, I was asked to write a letter to the people who had hurt me the most. One of them I knew had hurt me, but I was never sure that in that way. I had a fragment of a memory. When I was going to write it I asked myself if anything happened. That is when I received a memory ina dream. From there, Jake, the little's protector, became mad because I wanted to pretend it wasnt real. Jake started attacking me and just plainly taking over by force. I had seen Jake and lily before, but never realized it wasnt normal. I realized I also have like an 8 year old boy, who never speaks and a 2 year old girl, (among others) because since Jake was taking over he just let them run lose. Now everytime my neighbors kids cried I got flashes with the baby crying. One day, it was so bad jake kept on telling me tolisten through the wall make sure the mom was there. Then this alter came out. She is suicidal. It took everything in us to bring us back from the ledge. It was not until I apologized to the baby and accepted what has happened that Jake explained why he did what he did. He later apologized. From then on, Jqke would not let me believe I did not have Did. Now I know she is asleep. She just sleeps and is at peace. Jake told me all she wanted was for me to believe her. He was mad because I woke her up then did not believe her. I am sorry it happened to you. I recently just found out and am still working on accepting everything. Sometimes I still feel like maybe I am making all this up and we still struggle with this whole situation. At least now we have stabilized... For now

The title of this video is kind of sitcom-esque. like if I came home and there was just a baby there and I asked "why is there a baby here?" and the rest of the episode was just hijinks. More seriously, it's interesting to hear stuff that you *don't* know everything about. I think everyone has weird things like that (well not quite like that) where it's just part of how the brain works and you don't get it but you can make some guesses as to why stuff is that way.

When people obsess about 'who is the original'? I always imagine it's like meeting a person who is one of identical twins or triplets. If you were to ask that person the question, "so, which one of you is the original?" and expecting there to be an answer for you! It's a futile question because how do you define 'the original'? Is it the twin that was born first? What is it about being born first that qualifies a person to be identified as 'the original'. Asking this question to a system with DID is practically the same as asking the identical twin. The question doesn't make sense because it isn't based on any objective truth.

Four years ago, long before our diagnosis, we went through an intense trauma treatment and recovery program at a place called The Meadows. One week of that was a suuuuuuper intense Experiential Therapy week. At the end, we did some major inner child work. I couldn't figure out why my particular experience was soooo much more intense and emotional and powerful than others in our small group. Now? Now I know that my vision of a 9 year old "me" picking up a 6 month old "me" and walking into a door inside my mind? the feeling of them melting when that door closed? We are 90% certain that was a Little and our Baby fusing with the rest of the system. We just didn't understand what was happening to us, at the time. I had some black outs in the following week but it was chalked up to stress, due to the nature of the program I was in. I'm not sure who they fused with. Someone we still don't have access to, I guess. We've only been diagnosed for two weeks, so ALL of this is new to us. It sounds like torture, but that entire 45 day experience was what we needed to process and move forward from a lot of our trauma. There is still so much to work on, but the clearing of the trauma we did is what allowed our DID to surface. Now, we can work on our stuff with a much more clear understanding of what we're dealing with.

@RialVestro
@RialVestro 5 лет назад
People might be asking how an alter formed as a baby because they don't believe that trauma can happen before you're old enough to form memories. I literally had this exact argument with someone less than a week ago who tried to claim that a new born can't experience trauma if they won't remember it. Which by the way I think is absolutely wrong. Trauma is still trauma regardless of memories being formed around it or not. Trauma victims even if they are old enough to form memories often can't because of the trauma. So the idea that an infant can't experience Trauma because they can't form memories seems to be a very common misconception that you might want to make a video about.
@moonkookie1505
@moonkookie1505 5 лет назад
Yup, and I don't understand the logic behind it. Because for example, me, and I'm guessing the majority of people, can't remember when they've first learned how to talk. So basically what trauma is, is something bad happening to you that makes your brain react a certain way so that you can avoid that happening ever again. So basically, you "learn" how to live. Just like you hearing others talk make you learn how to speak. At least that's my way of looking at it
@christianf.5553
@christianf.5553 5 лет назад
I think a point most people forget, is that memories are formed from the day the brain becomes developed enough (in the womb) to interpret sensory information. Things like motion, sound and (possibly) touch are prime candidates for this. However, these memories aren't stored as images and words as our more "adult" memories. Simply because we haven't learned how to think in images and word yet. They are instead stored as raw feelings, as they are the only tools we have to understand the world before we start putting words to images we see. This is one reason for why some people have phobias, even though their rational mind knows that the item of their phobia is perfectly safe; An event in early childhood linked that image with a deep sense of fear, and thus brings up this memory (as a feeling) every time you see it. Also, if you couldn't learn anything (which trauma is, only in a severely negative way) before you could form conscious memories. Children wouldn't learn that something really warm hurts to touch, and thus do so repeatedly for many years. All of this just goes to show that trauma can indeed happen as soon as the child is able to sense things, period.

Thank you. We know about our baby because the care taking part looks after it. Some of us know when she is there and holding/soothing the baby (no gender or name known for us). Hearing a crying baby used to be very distressing before diagnosis and understanding. I even made an experimental film about psychosis (I was told it's what it was) and the motif was the baby crying. I never understood. Now I and we do. Sorry you share the confusion and painful realisations, and grateful you speak openly about it. It does help to know we aren't alone in the experience....and also not alone in not fully having explanations. Sending safe support to you all.

My theory is that the baby was created as part of the fight or flight response (specifically either fawn or freeze). That’s why it requires nothing, doesn’t cry, doesn’t need care, and just sleeps. She’s the “perfect baby” because she doesn’t fuss or cry or make noise. I’m guessing she was there to prevent the body getting in trouble for doing regular baby stuff. I could be totally wrong, though. Just speculating.

Actually in our system we have an alter similar to the baby. We call her the child actually lol. She is not the first alter to have formed but she is an EP that holds several years of very hard trauma. We can't talk to her, she has her own team of protectors that don't talk to anyone else. The system overseer knows where she is and stuff like that but none of us know exactly. I don't think we can reach her and work on her trauma until everyone is healed and happy first. We do call her the core but only on the point that, we had a pretty stable life after the creations of the first few alters and by the time her trauma happened we had started to integrate. But then with the trauma she holds, it stopped and now we're a system. So something that would have stayed as PTSD just grew and the single identity never formed. So this is our experience and everyone's experience is slightly different. But yeah we too have our own "the baby" situation.

In one of your other videos, you nearly broke vocally trying to express how so many people and so much could happen within such a small time frame and to such a young child. Seeing this video, and your others, including Mistletoe's integration, just... hurts so much to know that you chose to try and overcome and do your best despite everything else going to shit and... for the amount of anger there is for those that hurt you, it's so hard to think about that when you're doing so well. It makes me want to cry. You choose actively to smile and be happy than otherwise, than many others who would never even fault you for it. I don't know what else to express other than that you are so fucking strong, and inspiring, and that's messed up a bit (I can relate) being told how 'inspiring' you are when you were / are broken, but for so many people who can't even imagine seeing the light at the end of their dark tunnel, you alone inspire the motivation to overcome it. I appreciate this whole system so much.

a baby COULD be a fictive or factive introject - where we might dissociate to a superhuman character because the brain associates being superhuman with being STRONG - and so my theory is that if we see a baby - especially one that ONLY sleeps - that maybe our brain's way of trying to find PEACE, wanting to "sleep like a baby" and be at rest - such as be at a time when we were innocent and entrusted our caregivers to just let us sleep - undisturbed. So no. I don't think a baby alter means that the baby had trauma - I think it means that the brain is just searching for a way to reach PEACE.

Wyn, you asked if this video was helpful and I just wanted to say it was for me. I have a baby (infant) in my headspace and I experience similar things. I don’t know anything about it. I know it sleeps. I know someone cares for it. It sleeps in a bassinet. That’s all I know. I don’t have a very developed headspace because I am scared of it. But I wanted to say this video was incredibly validating since I thought I had “made up” the baby. Or that it was a metaphor I constructed somehow. Either way, I am (sadly) not alone. xo

Sometimes an alter takes form of something/someone that for a child seems safe. Like a grown man, a dragon or .... maybe a baby? If a child experiencing trauma thinks that this would never happen if I was a tiny baby (comparing oneself to a younger sibling or relative perhaps), then an alter created by the trauma could take form of a tiny baby. I think.

The infant was there when trauma happened and trauma is not a one time event in most cases. It has no language to describe what is happening, it is simply experiencing what the body experiences each moment. If terror is present the infant ultimately dissociates. Responses that the body formulates evolve over time but there is no narrative to explain any of it... it simply happens... like the iris that closes down automatically when confronted with bright light. The entire body is doing that in response to what is happening in its world... the good, the bad, the ugly. I've not been diagnosed with DID but through my reading I've come to understand structural dissociation has been a significant part of my journey and that sub-personalities came into existence along the way. It is all rooted in very early trauma that was perpetuated for many years with newer traumas added to early trauma. It often happens like that for trauma survivors. I appreciate this channel and the clear and kind presentation of these issues. Thank you... I say that knowing you no longer post new content.

Singlets really do seem to need to get a handle on something like an original. I recently mentioned to a few people that I was "born" when the body was a teenager and therefore am newer than most of the others/alters. That surprised them (I assume because I'm the main host and accept the body's name) and it seemed to change their view of us a bit. Which is good, but it was weird to realize they thought of me as some how more valid or real or a legit owner of the body than say our co-host whom they've also spent a lot of time with. Also, random theory based on our own situation: maybe she is sleeping so much as a kind of symbolic showing of escaping or shutting out the world? I say this because, we have a toddler who lives in a corner of the inner world that no one except her designated protector has any access to. I can see her in there swinging almost non-stop, but I don't think she can see any of us. While figuring out the trauma time line, I realized that she is probably swinging in her own little world, because that was our first method of escape/self-soothing and since running away from home didn't work out, she probably just retreated inside instead to escape.

Remember when you guys did the video about how an infant has separate ego consciousnesses (I think that was the term) that exist separately before full integration at age 3-7? What if the baby (the part that was responsible for the body’s sleep at that time) was the only infant consciousness that wasn’t disturbed during the body’s development and trauma experiences? So it just stayed there to ensure the body would at least be able to sleep peacefully?

I was going to say that if the baby fronted, none of you would probably know since babies that young don't really know what's going on.... then realized that sounds silly since systems work so differently and like you said, babies and littles in systems are different from babies and kids not in systems! I am assuming that the other alters have tried interacting with the baby, and she still does not react in any way? It might help if she was given a name and all the other alters started interacting with her. It may help her to interact as well. I am guessing she is an alter. But I also know that basically babies are pretty much empty vessels. They need to be taught how to do everything with the exception of the peeing and pooping so I am guessing she is not quite like a normal baby alter, but you might suggest interacting with her. Like picking her up and talking to her and seeing what happens.

That is incredibly interesting, as usually therapists believe trauma at that young of age, 4 months, is not something that stays or is remembered because of their lack of understanding of a identity or their body. Around four months old, you will see them really looking at their feet or hands moving and being just fascinated because they aren't quite sure if those feet and hands belong to them and its so funny to watch😂

Interesting. I totally relate! I have not heard anyone explain their baby the same way. we have a baby too, an infant, I have never felt their presence, I just know they are there and are protected by several others who do not interact with me nor front. We have another baby, older with the name, S (is all I will say), she is a secret and nobody will share about her at all, I think she is protected along with the infant, but I am not sure, but is like the same as the infant, never has fronted, but she is a HUGE secret and others are forbidden to talk about S. Our toddlers never really front, but we can feel their presence or hear their excitement about stuff, there are a couple of parts who are under 5 who only present when they get excited about things they like, but they are protected as well and do not forward. Thank you for your videos. I watch once in a while out of curiosity, they make me feel less alone. I don't have anyone irl who knows about us or gets it.
