Yeah I wonder too that comment was kind of an insult. The rest of the tractor functions. And in reality at 5 grand it's a tractor if it runs and functions that's not bad.

When replacing Axle Bearings always replace BOTH sides ; since one side failed due to lack of maintenance , the other side can't be far from it . If you are a half way decent welder you can weld up those chipped gears , if you can't locate replacement parts at a reasonable price .
@fiat38

You can bet the oil had never been changed in those, most people don't know that they separate from the rest of the rear end. Best to do both sides, each side should hold a quart 90wt gear oil each. Another alternative is get a complete rear end from a MF 50 with drum brakes, and replace the whole rear end/axles from the transmission on back.

Earl was blessed to be rescued by you! He knew he’d have a great home there with you! You don’t want to upset the Blue Ridge MTN Gods, by giving up on him! Once fixed and he’ll repay you a 1000 fold and be a great tractor forever! Get him all restored and looking too notch and not only be a great work tractor but he’d make a nice tractor for 4th of July parades and holiday parades. His restoration and popularity would bring in more viewers and more advertising for the channel!

I love these repair videos. Reminds you how much pride went into the equipment from the design engineers to the assembly line. It seems to me older designers also consulted mechanics to make it easier to repair. Not always but it seems the thought of “someone might have to fix this later on” was at least discussed during design. Keep it up Mr Stony ridge.

Your videos bring several very wholesome things to the table. The first is knowledge. By showing your successes and failures in a real way your are giving a gift to your audience. I personally have always wanted to know how a V-rake worked and how round bales were made. Thank you. The second thing is a passionate love of life and a drive to achieve. It is an inspiration to many, and again, I thank you. I hope one day to do something very similar to you. I definitely won't be chronicling it as you do though. I spent 20 hard years as a US Navy Seabee so none of my videos would be appropriate for children.

It might be very cheap for parts and worth looking into I think brother. Talk to a local old timer, respect those guys and they can fix anything. Take care Josh. Love your farm too. The gears are in not to bad shape, if you are not going to work it hard you can even weld them back up if you want and just replace the bearings, or even turn around the gears so they work on the other side as it looks like the got broken all on the same side.

Just bought rear wheel bearing kits for my 59 MF65 at Steiner's tractor parts for $25.95 ea. Something like $11.50 shipping. Gears you can take them to a quality welder and reshape them with a die grinder. Using grind wheels and polishing discs. Low speed gears don't need to be polished mirror smooth.

Hey Josh, backyard mechanic Tech Tip when working on crush & run driveways. Use a piece of 1/2” plywood under your jack and jack stand. It will 1) keep your jack from bending as it is able to roll as you lift and 2) it will prevent your jack stand from sinking into the ground thus becoming unstable. 60 degrees, nice. It’s 28 up here in Northern NJ. I spent my afternoon making & welding frame supports on my manure spreader. 2 of them decided to rot away and fall into the drag chains at the same time. Fortunately, it’s only a 35 bushel spreader (small hobby horse farm).

john doe Why? It has one chipped tooth, and that’s on the end of it. Unless the ring gear is cracked, file the rough edges off that one tooth and run it. The planetary gears are the issue here. He needs some that are in better shape, or some new ones if he can find them.

Josh, that tractor is a great find and deserves to STAY on the farm, all farms have an old tractor, fix it and it will b e an old friend (after you straighten the exhaust pipe ) ignore negative comments they haven't a clue., if you can't fix it now, put it under cover and repair at your convenience. adjust the carb, it's a little rich, turn the mixture screw to the right a hair.

Scale of 1 to 10, that is about a 3 for cost, about an 8 for complex. It really isn't bad. You could probably re use all those gears and the housing damage is very minimal. That said the gear are probably pretty cheap. I would personally keep the old gears as they may be much higher quality than new replacement gears and you may decide to just re use. Getting to and replacing the inner bearing is your main problem and it isn't too bad, just time consuming. If you have the ability to have that stuff gently blasted and get rid of the rust, that will help longevity. 12:57 in the video, there appears to maybe be a crack in the housing at the top. It looks like it may have been repaired once already. I would also look into that. Again, you might be able to re use, but depending on how much "Work" you plan on using this for, that would dictate repairs/replacement.
@EVTodd

you should seek out a tractor salvage yard in your area. A whole housing assembly should be easily obtained. Remove the hole housing from the transmission and install the new used housing. The repair will cost more then the value of the tractor.

I feel your pain! I bought my first tractor 2 months ago for our land, a 50HP kubota L5030. I ran it for 3 days and then smoke started pouring out of the exhaust and it had a ton of crank pressure. I tore down the entire block 1 piece at a time hoping for a valve fix but ended up with 2 shattered pistons. Luckily I caught it fast enough and didnt continue to run it. There was no scoring on the sleeves and I was able to rehone, replace rings and connecting rod bearings and get it back together. 400$ in parts and 3 days in labor with cleaning and inspecting. Runs great now and has a ton more power. First engine tear down that I have ever done, and after having done it I will stick to the pre 2007 era tractors because man that was easy to work on. ALL mechanical diesel, no time chain/belt super simple once you get into it.

Josh, Go to Yesterday's Tractors. They have your parts along with manuals for your tractor. The planetary pinion gear is around $58 apiece. If it were me I would clean it of the bearing pieces and put it back together, load it on a trailer and haul it to the high schools FFA shops. That would give the kids experience and they would clean it up and paint it like a new one. Cost in parts is what it would cost you.

On the sun gear (gear in the tractor) since it was 1 tooth and just a small piece that was chipped. I'd weld the tooth back and grind it down. The other is now portable and your able to take it somewhere if you need to do you won't need a mobile mechanic. Just need to find away to replace the bearing on the tractor. Should be fairly easy. This is a keeper for sure

If you’re on an extreme budget, can you flip the planetary gears around and then the unbroken teeth side can mesh, then use it gently until you can get replacements? Some lawn tractor gears are reversible. Then you just need a good cleaning/greasing and a new bearing with grease. I would say fix it and learn, no rush.

Josh, clean those parts and let us have a good look. A little chipping can be tolerated if you smooth the edges with a die grinder. There are many used tractor parts yards, tractor is worth fixing.

Check with Worthington Ag Parts in Goldsboro NC for used parts. Also check the center section of the axle and clean out any contamination that may have transferred by the axle bearing.

2 ways to go: replace broken gears and bearings or locate a used right planetary and replace the entire unit. There are tractor salvage yards that can help. All State Ag Parts probably has the used planetary. Price? You really never know as on used parts there isn't fixed pricing. If I had to guess I would say $500.00 plus freight. On just replacing gears and bearings with new it will probably be about the same. Common failure (caused by never changing the oil or checking the oil level btw) so parts should be available. Obviously be sure to fully service the left side.I would pull it down and check the axle bearing too.

I just rebuilt a planetary on a tractor exactly like that and I ordered the planetary gears from yesterday's tractor and got the part number off of the Barons and went to my local tractor dealer and ordered bearings everything cost me right around $300 to fix it it's not a hard job you can do it yourself just take your time clean everything up definitely need to replace the little planetary gears but the ring gear and The Sun Gear inside the housing will be fine

You should find it easy to get a complete axle unit in a scrapyard as the bearing and seal just inside the wheel are also toast ,you may as well take off the complete axle becide the differential as you will almost certainly have to to do the brakes before using the tractor ,parts readily avaliable here in ireland for old masseys but rare sellers like those gears go scrapyard

Also getting a complete axle you can work on it inside and in comfort. Use this to your advantage and take it apart and check everything so you don't get a nasty surprise in a year or so. It might not save time now, but in the long run it's a good way to do things. Or as someone I can't remember said; There's never time to do things right, but always time to do things twice.

I wouldn't worry about the main gear in the housing. One chipped tooth won't hurt as long as you clean and de-burr it. Source some new drive gears, stick a new bearing and some new grease in it all you'll have a nice tractor! I reckon you can tackle it yourself with some patience and research. Good luck!
